AWESOME!!! I am not at the point of buying Arches paper, and here in Mexico there are no coupons or sales so it is extremely expensive for my beginner level. Canson has been so frustrating!!! Not anymore! Excellent tips. THANK YOU!

Wow. I thought I was the worst water colorist on the planet. I've been fighting with it for a very long time. I have even given up for awhile. I was buying the cheapest paper and paints thinking that would be good enough to learn. It just caused pure frustration. This video has given me the courage to try again! I have better paper and bought better paints. I'm going to look for the same brushes also. They look really good. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

This is probably the best video that explains and clearly shows the difference in paper quality. Bonus tips on techniques. I picked up the cansen xl and I'm just annoyed. Winsor and newton has a cellulose paper that is a bit better but I'm about to pull the trigger on arched paper soon.

WOW! I have been 'saving' my Arches for when I get 'better' at painting and using the Canson XL. It's been very frustrating for me . I will be using up some Arches and that will hopefully make it more satisfying for me. Thanks Emma!

Never throw any 100% cotton paper away either. If I wreck a painting, I cut it up into card pieces and use the back of the wrecked paper to test wet in wet blends before I do it on a working painting. Don't waste your money on cheap paper even for practice. If it's 100% cotton it's good paper - you don't need Arches. There's 5 other manufacturers that make excellent cotton papers.

I live in Edmonton, Alberta I have shopped at Delta Art and Drafting Supplies for years. There arches paper is $15.00 CDN for the 9X12 paper pad. At there price arches paper is very affordable. If you like to do wet on wet there are paints that are made to have a lot of movement. The Qor brand is known for there ability to spread when using the wet on wet technique.

I practice on Canson and Bee cellulose paper. It works well to do “rough drafts.” When I use 100% cotton paper, I cut it into halves or quarters. It really maximizes the paper. Nothing wrong with smaller paintings! It works great.

You are a great teacher. A friend and myself are planning to use your fantastic videos to learn how to do watercolor painting. I have been checking various teachers who are teaching on line and I find you to be the best. You take your time and explained every step right down to the proper paper, brushes, and paints. I also like how you show the steps as you do them, where I find a lot of teachers who are wonderful painters, but just let you watch them while they paint. Can’t wait to start. Thank you, Jeanette

I have used Fabriano Studio Watercolour Paper. It is 25% cotton, so better than Canson XL and less expensive than Arches, and now available in Canada 🇨🇦! Curry’s has it in the large 22 x 30” sheets you cut to size. Amazon.ca has the FAT pad that has 60, 9 x 12” sheets, and the more expensive 12 sheet pad. Great for colour swatches and practice so you aren’t worried about the cost.

Another thing between cotton and cellulose paper is that the cotton paper gives your art, a softer more organic feel where as cellulose has a more pixilated 2D feel to the art work… in my opinion.

Thank you, I feel like this video was made for me :D I have been whining a lot in the comments so maybe it was. I have just done your stegosaurus and bracheosaurus video and the results are hilariously bad. Maybe I did them too big as they dried out in seconds, but it is a very hot day here today too. I have been trying various papers and have ordered some Arches but it's taking ages! Two of the pads I ordered after I searched for cotton paper but they arrived and they're cellulose, so that's annoying. I like the paper I tried first so far, Faber Castell. ANYWAY. I am going to keep trying and you're an awesome teacher!! Thanks!

Cotton and wood pulp area both cellulose fibres (plant based). The difference is in the sizing and the strength of cotton over wood pulp. Cotton is much more absorbent, hence the bloom effect, and is more durable and withstand being worked much more. Interesting fact, you can make your own cotton paper but it takes a ton of work and needs to be retted using either caustic soda or a beating machine (or both) to break down the fibres.

Hi there! So heres something to know about KZfaq as well as myself. once someone starts getting a lot of comments, you DON’T get notifications anymore. The only way for me to see people’s comments is to scroll through each video and reply to each one or sometimes when there is a thread like this one, I will get a notification. Now, not sure if you know about this about me but I am a full time mother to a very busy 2 year old. These videos are something I do during nap time. I put out 3 videos a week, It is literally impossible for me to respond to every nice comment. I would love to say thank you to each one but I just simply can’t get to all of them. I also feel like I can’t just respond to some and not all. What I do do is, when I have downtime, I will scroll through the comments to see if there are any questions, I always try my best to answer those when I can. But if you are really looking to connect, message me on Instagram! I get notifications on all of those and I answer every single one! (My following there isn’t as big). Hope that helps you understand a bit of where I am coming from. I appreciate every single one of you!!

Hi, Emma, I'm in Oshawa ON and I get all my art supplies from Delta Art & Drafting out of Alberta. I was asking about Bee paper since I've always wanted to try it. Delta knows the Bee people, they were a Canadian company and then was sold to a US buyer and they have since gone bankrupt, and are hoping to rebrand that's why Bee paper is so hard to get. I have a question about your paints. I was doing lots of reading on them and to my surprise found that their pans and tubes are different formulas, unlike Daniel Smith and others. They strongly advise to not put tube paints on pallets to dry out and use as you can have problems with cracking and moulding. What are your thoughts? Thanks for all these tips, really helpful! 💗
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on humidity in your area. For the most part, Winsor Newton tubes are harder to rewet after being dried out, which is why W&N formulate their paint pans differently than their tubes. She lives in Canada, so she'll likely have less issues than in drier places that are to the south of her.

@@EmmaLefebvre Thanks for letting me know. I'm going to call the company when they open Monday and see what I can find out anything about whether and when their paper will be in stock anywhere. If I find out anything helpful, I'll post it here. :')
