I totally understand your frustrations with skyward! For me I gave it 3 stars since I came to the realization that it was intended for a YA audience and not for an old man like me 😂 and all my criticisms could just be responded to by saying 'it wasn't for you'. Definitely give his mistborn trilogy a shot though, it's extremely worth it!

Yess, looking forward to Dicken vs Tolstoy debate. My fav read of the month is `of Mice and Men'. Wow, I like the writing style of Steinbeck and his characterization. And also I read 'the catcher in the rye' which is my fav book of all time.

I read Mistborn at the beginning of the year and I really liked it! I haven’t read any of his other books so I can’t really talk about it, but Mistborn was good. Very happy that you liked to read those volumes of Hunter x Hunter. It only keeps getting better from there.

Mishima has become one of my favorite author's recently. I have 1 more book to go in the Sea of Fertility tetralogy and while book 3 was a bit of a step down, the first two entries are some of the greatest novels I've ever read

the way you talk about One Hundred Years Of Solitude never fails to give me shivers, it's also my favorite book of all time!! my fav book this month was The Brothers Karamazov by my love Dostoevsky, very long and slow and boring at times but soso worth it. also special mention to Nausea by Sartre which was just too good and scarily relatable

I really love Mishima ! My favorite one by him is Forbidden Colors, which is about an old scholar using a young gay man to take revenge on the women of his life. His most popular work is The golden pavilion but maybe keep it for later 😊 my favorite book I read this month was The Blue Castle by L.M Montgomery, and it became one of my favorite books of all times, really recommend 👍

I had started 100 years of solitude back when i was 14-15 but never got to the end (probably for the best because i didn't fully grasp it at the time) but I always knew that when i finally did read it i would love it and after hearing you talk so much about it i did! and i finished is a few weeks ago and i think it will also stay with me forever and i will just keep reading it again and again it's just simply amazing

My favorite book of the month was also my only book of the month. The Story of the Stone (or Dream of a Red Chamber) by Cao Xueqin and it's not even a real book because its the first volume out of five of a single book. And I haven't even finished that volume. But its in your ballpark from what I can tell so you'd probably like it.

My favorite book of the month was Heidi in the original German. I read it as a child in English and it was one of those stories that sorta stayed with me. I read it in German while backpacking in the artic fells of Finland, mostly by a lake above the treeline, and it was perfect.

Finally finished Anna Karenina after starting it earlier this year! Favorite read of the month 💗

Stoner was great! His deteriorating relationship with his daughter was the hardest hitting part for me. Butcher's Crossing, also by Williams, was great too. I haven't read Sailor yet, but I started his Spring Snow, which starts a tetralogy, and it is so beautiful. I'd recommend that. Have you read Tolstoy's Hadji Murat yet? It was really affecting.

My favorite book of the month was Chess by stefan zweig that i actually read because one of your hauls so I recommend you to pick it up it was amazing how much do i think about it considering how short it is and I believe you would love it.❣️❣️

This month was a good reading month for me, not because I read loads but because the ones I did read I generally enjoyed. Probably the favourite would be where the crawdads sing, but in an effort not to be basic I'll say Gallant by V.E Schwab, or maybe rereading the deathy hallows. I am on completely the same page with One Hundred Years of Solitude, rereading it I honestly couldn't understand how any human person could have the capacity to write such a complex book so perfectly. Everything about it is exactly what it should be. It's almost to the point where I'm genuinely shocked nobody's made a religion out of it. Also all this cryptic gesturing at secret books and things has piqued my interest. I managed to read five books in August, which is well above my average so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself (especially since two of them were the Silmarillion and One Hundred Years of Solitude). One of them was also Chesterton's first collection of Father Brown stories, which was new to me and a really great time.

i read stoner last year, i really liked it! also a room with a view is such a fun summery read also it's gabriel garcia márquez with the stretch in the "ma" :)

This month I read 10 books, 5 of which were from Romanian authors (me being, as you might guess, Romanian). My favourite books from international authors were “Britt-Marie was here” by Fredrik Backman and “The immortal life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot (wonderful nonfiction mixing science, medicine and racism in America).

hi emma! the sailor who fell from grace with the sea was also my first mishima, I fell in love with the writing but not necessary with the story. I would recommend you to continue with spring snow by him. It's one of the most beautifully written books I've ever read I think

I read the Broken Earth trilogy last summer and actually loved it. Totally fell in love with her writing.

Just started reading 100 Years of Solitude. I’m taking it slow as I’ve chosen this novel for fairly intense note taking/ summarizing so I can keep track of who did what crazy thing. I am loving it so far, I can’t believe how many strange and interesting things can be squeezed into short descriptions of a family’s life.

Ooh I love that you read your first Mishima & it's one of his that I don't even know! I'd recommend The Temple of the Golden Pavilion (standalone) OR Spring Snow (first in a tetralogy) to read next, would be curious to hear what you think of either. :) Also, one book I recently read & loved a lot was When We Lost Our Heads by Heather O'Neill.

Great commentary as always 🥰 Re: Mishima, I’d say coming off of that one you might try THE TEMPLE OF THE GOLDEN PAVILION. Also a teenage protagonist and covering some of the same thematic preoccupations and with a wild premise wherein the protagonist falls in love with the titular temple.

My favourite book that I read is August was by far Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees. I absolutely adored this book and it is now one of my favourites of all time! It was weird and wonderful and you could never quite tell what was going to happen next.

I read the Golden Pavillion and Confessions by a mask from Yukio Mishima and i agree with you on the beautiful language that is used! The golden pavillion was a bit slow for me, but I really liked confessions by a mask. It feels very autobiographical and it was interesting to dive into Mishima’s mind :)

hi! my favorite book i read this month was this super cute manga called emma. its about this maid who falls in love with the son of a rich merchant in victorian england, while also dealing with the many men who are obsessed with her beauty. it has such amazing vibes, and the art style is super cute. I think you would really love it!

I read the Broken Earth series when I heard it from you and it was also hard for me to grasp the concepts much because of the terms that I had to check in the glossary many times lmao. Though nce you start it and familiarize yourself with it, it gets easier. The first book really was so good! That "twist", if you can call it that was amazing. I can pretty much see us in a post-apocalyptic world like that for sure.

I also read Room with a view in august because my high school english teacher recommended it to me, and I think it was my favourite read of the month. I believe E. M. Forster depicts the story and the settings beautifully and the book pleasantly surprised me!

My favourite August book was No one writes back by Jang Eunjin (Korean Library of Literarure edition). Other amazing reads were 1Q84 and Season of Migration To The North. I love your recommendations and you have definitely influenced me on buying my first Mishima (I decided to buy Life for Sale because it has such a pretty cover haha). I'm so excited for you and your Murakami journey since he is one of my favourite authors! I love your videos so much

My favorite read of the month was A Psalm for the Wild-Built, which I listened to on audio. A beautiful short book about a monk who serves the god of small comforts in a solar punk world and they meet a robot that is trying to understand humanity. Would recommend to anyone who is feeling lost and unsure of their purpose and wants something cozy.

If you want to know more about Mishima, read Confessions of a Mask. It's semi-autobiographical and a good entry into his ideas of beauty, death, and youth.

Favorite read of August was Ocean Vuong's "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous" though I am savoring it and it will likely be my Sept favourite as well.

I need to try another Haruki Murakami book. I loved the first 95% of Killing Commendatore but the last 5% made me regret spending any time reading it.

I have read only one out of these 15 books - Stoner. Undoubtedly, it is a classic novel, very good, a must-read, but I agree rather depressing story. One hundred years of solitude is now up in my top priority TBR books. So far I’ve only read his ‘Living to tell the tale’ and fell in love with his writing. So good! Murakami also moved up in my TBR list of books. My book of the month was ‘My Little China Man’ by Alma M.Karlin. She was one of the first European women who alone circled the globe (Wikipedia). She was a very interesting woman and a brilliant writer!

A Room with A View! I always thought the title would be a perfect name for a blog, a personal website or something. So I shamelessly took it as mine 10 years ago.😂 Haven't read it but watched the movie adaptation quite a few times since childhood and it has a big influence on me, especially characters like the Emersons. Thanks for the recommendation, now I must read it! And hopefully you would enjoy the movie, Emma. Your description of the book is exactly how I feel about the movie,😄very well-made in a sophisticated, elegant way, full of fun and sentiments. Perhaps it's a very faithful adaptation. And it's from Merchant Ivory Productions, directed by James Ivory, along with his other adaptations of Forster's novels, Maurice and Howards End. He's so good at this kind of romantic, literary adapting but only got 3 nods on Oscar Best Director. So glad that he finally got one Oscar for Call Me by Your Name screenplay.

Hi Emmie, i think you should czech out Milan Kundera books. "The unbearable lightness of being" is one of my favourite books of his.

I also read 15 books in August although a few were novellas. My favorites were Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley and The Trees by Percival Everett.

I know what you are talking about whan you are trying to describe your feelings after having read A Hundred Years of Solitude. I loved that book soo much when I read it at high school some 30 years ago. Then, I wanted to read it once again and it was such a disappointment! I can't even find one single thing why I was so crazy in love with that book. Crazy, isn't it?

I finally read My Dark Vanessa this month and it was mind blowing. So hard to read but I couldn't put it down

My favorite read of August was A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin which I reread for the first time in a *very* long time, and it more than held up. I appreciated it in ways I never did as a child or young adult.

My current favourite read is Babel by RF.Kuang... which is a jump out of my comfort zone, as these days I rarely venture outside of classics! I don't know if you've read it, as part of the Dark Academia genre, I couldn't see it listed on any of your previous vids - ???? I'm not sure when it came out in other countries as it's only just been released here in the UK. But if you haven't read it, check it out. It's all about books, colonialism, power, language and translation based around an imaginary translation tower at Oxford uni. A few chapters in and I'm totally hooked!
