I know this reply is two years late but just wanted to say: Erik was also a ruthless murderer and often posed serious danger to Christine's life. He definitely did aid her in her singing at the Opera but it was more of an infatuation than love for her because she'd been the only person to show him compassion all his life - and even that was because of his façade as the Angel of Music that her father had told her tales about. Christine was also shown to have known Raoul long before she'd joined the Opera and also have reciprocated feelings for him until she'd become trapped by the Phantom's schemes. But I agree - I look at Erik as a tragic hero whose only joy gets taken away from him. I've never felt sadder for a character in a book than I've felt for Erik.
