Whoooa! You found them! When did you film this episode? They're usually only available in midsummer! And long-ahn or long-yen, are indeed the proper pronunciation. When they're very ripe, the shell should be a deep golden brown with no hints of green. THey should be large and firm, but not rock hard. The flavor at its best is earthy (maybe that tortilla's flavor youre getting at), but intensely sweet with a flavor profile like honey. They are used as a sweetener when dried, that's how sweet they are. Unfortunately its common to get subpar longan around here 'cause of our shipping practices and the fact that theyre a non native fruit. They really are best only in mid to late summer. Otherwise they can just be kinda blandly sweet, or worse, flavorless.

Thank you for commenting. I came to this video specifically to explain the same thing. I was wildly disappointed that the ones she had were not impressive because I expected a much bigger, more excited reaction. I really wish she could find some good Longan and really try them.

Growing up in the US I only ever found fresh longans so many times, but they were always a real treat to me when I did. For me they're leaps and bounds above the lychee and slightly above rambutan.

These are my absolute favourite. Here in Malaysia they're also called Buah Mata Kucing which translates to Cat's Eye Fruit instead of Dragon's Eye. And I think the flavour Emmy was trying to describe could be a sharpness to the sweet flavour, sort of like carbonated gassy drinks. You know how they have that sharp taste/feel on your tongue when you drink them? These fruits have that, too, but not as strong as the carbonated drinks.

I think the name 'Longan' comes from 'Long Ngan' (it's like an N sound that comes from the back of your throat but I have no idea how to write that down phonetically), the Cantonese name for the fruit and it literally it translates to 'Dragon Eye', which I always thought was pretty cool. We used to always buy a case of them whenever we went to the Asian supermarket so the taste is really nostalgic for me. :)

here, we also called it "Mata Kucing" or Cat's Eye. You have to try Manggis or Manggosteen, it tastes heavenly..!! The peel is dark but the fruit inside is beautifully white. You could guess how much the fruit inside by the pattern at the peel.

emmymadeinjapan I always describe them as having somewhat of a musky flavor. It's kind of amber-y; like when you accidentally get cologne/perfume in your mouth (only pleasant).
@fuuchan27
@fuuchan27 9 жыл бұрын
That's a great description of the flavor!
@IQzminus2
@IQzminus2 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah i would describe the flavour as at first you just get a super sweet straight up sugary taste (maybe some small hints of honey but that is about it), and then you get this second note with a hint of something that is extremely hard to describe yet feels familiar-ish. It’s sort of savoury, musky with almost a small smokey hint. But it does taste very plant like, a sort of floral savoury taste. Quite pleasant, but a little unexpected. And I wouldn’t say it’s umami packed either. So I don’t think that is it. I think they are okay, I think most people will like the fruit. Because it’s basically just taste like sugar with a very pleasant texture. As long as people can get over having a fruit with a faint but a bit unexpected aftertaste. And quite a few will probably grow to really enjoy the taste if they eat a bunch of them over a few days. I think they are okay. I can see why it’s quite often used in cooking. It’s a interesting ingredient that I can see loads of uses for, as well as eating it fresh as is.

I've only had these a few times, but each time I really loved them! It's hard to find in my home town and the closest thing I can find to longan are rambutans (which are unfortunately expensive at my grocery store!) I think they have a similar flavor to rambutans and a more subtle flavor compared to lychee when ripe. The only way I can describe longan is sweet. To me there isn't any distinctive floral tones, or anything like that. They're just really refreshing and fun to eat on a hot summers day!

Hey Emmy! :D I'm from Malaysia, and this fruit is called 'longan', the exact way you pronounced it but with more of the Malaysian accent. Anyways, you can tell when it's ripe by it's smell, it should release a very very strong, sweet-ish aroma. And also, I'd suggest you try Salak from Indonesia! :D

It's eaten in Taiwan during the summer and it tastes like honey.the one you got is ripe but not too ripe.if you open one and you see white slimy stuff on it toss it cause the taste is already sour and fermented.to Taiwan and try the ones there,it's sweeter than the ones imported to foreign countries.i had the ones in Taiwan,and nothing beats the ones in asian southeast asian countries.

The way we eat it is we peel away some of the skin or at least break the skin with our teeth, then keep it in the mouth and suck on it like candy for at least thirty seconds. Afterwards, eat a lemon! The fruit itself isn't the best, but the effect is awesome :D we actually have a bush of it here at home

When I tried Longan for the very first time, the taste was so strange to me that I was put off by it. Some 10 or-so minutes later I gave it another chance and it seemed like the flavour had improved; and each consecutive one I had seemed to get tastier, to the point that I kept popping one right after the other. I only stopped when my finger[nail]s started to hurt from peeling so many of them. There's a tree here called a buckeye, its "nut" has 2-3 seeds inside, the Longan seed looks just like a miniature version of a buckeye :D
