Emmylou Harris is talking about her life and career with Tavis Smiley, April 20, 2011. Opening and ending credits as well as music video "Good Night Old World" cut out.
Here is the original description for this interview from the Tavis Smiley PBS page:
"Twelve-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter explains her passion for rescuing dogs, finding her own voice in music and the track about Emmett Till on her latest CD. She's been called the "elder statesperson for country music," and 12-time Grammy Award winner Emmylou Harris is admired as much for her straightforward songwriting as for her expressive singing. Forty years into her career, she's still doing both with her 21st studio release, "Hard Bargain." Harris spent much of her childhood in North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina before moving to New York to pursue her music. A Country Music Hall of Fame inductee, the Nashville-based superstar supports several causes in her free time".

I met Emmy Lou when I attended Brandywine College 1970. She was just starting out on her first tour. I was booked in Brandywine's coffee house but gave up my gig since she was passing thru. It was very cool. She was a very sweet, kind, and an interesting person. She was playing solo & was great. Got to hang out with the person who ran the coffee house, Emmy Lou & her manager throughout the evening. She is a great vocalist & unique guitarist.

I think this is one of the best interviews I've heard with Emmylou Harris. This interviewer listens to her answers and asks her to say more. Excellent!

I agree, the interviewer is fabulous. And he picks up on points that she makes that would make an interesting conversation if she were to say more.

I watched Emmylou singing 'Never can tell' on TV when I was a teenager. I couldn't sleep that night waiting for the record store to open the next morning to spend all my savings on EH records. Forty years later now and I still have that same love for this woman...

With the talent deficit that has plagued talkshow TV for decades, isn’t it foolish not to give Tavis a second chance, seriously. Johnny Carson and Tavis, you can forget everyone else. Emmylou, so elegant, what can you say. Among other things this gem is an insightful interview into the mind of the greatest artist front lady of our generation, just the Hot Band alone, is more than a lifetime of contribution to American music. Just a beautiful interview.

This glimpse into Emmy Lou and her family, and the rest of her background story helps to illuminate her ongoing career, and is a feast of stories for her many fans. Thanks for this. Tavis is a sadly under-rated talk show host; and I've seen many jewels of interviews he's done. Check him out and enjoy.

Just loved the conversation between Tavis and Emmylou, what a smart and intelligent women she is as well has being beautiful. As I said in a previous comment I have vinyl albums I bought in the early 70s I have hard bargain in the cd player in the car everytime time I go out Emmylou is there, just don't get sick of it. There are few joys in the world Emmylou is is one of them. Anyone that loves animals the way she does has a pure heart. Beautiful lady just love her, stay safe. Doug from Australia

Emmylou Harris is one of those people who seem to have the Midas touch. For nearly 50 years, she has consistently given the world some of the most amazing music that anybody is capable of producing. In all this time, I personally have yet to hear even one that I disliked. I like some more than others, but no dislikes. This is truly an extraordinary human being. She not only has a beautiful singing voice, but a lovely speaking voice as well. I could listen to her talk all day. She's always interesting, and she does great interviews, because it's obvious that the lights are on, and everybody is home. The human race is fortunate to have Emmylou Harris.

Mairi Ann Cullen's comment is exactly what I thought. Tavis, living in Florida, I've never ran into you before. I need to check out more of your interviews. This is absolutely the best Emmylou interview I've seen or read. Way Way above. I've been a huge EH fan since Pieces of the Sky. I had to back up and buy all the GP / EH albums. Became a big Gram fan. Thank you. Excellent work.

Someone can tell me why I'm in love with this woman ? Because of her amazing beauty, even when' she's getting old ? Because she has in her eyes sweetness and kidness ? Because she really lessons, looks and shares with people ? Because she really loves singing and playing music ? Because she seems to be out of show-business system ? Because of her voice that I've heard since I'm 10 years old ? I love you Emmylou ❤

What a gorgeous and incredibly talented woman. And if that isn't enough she's amazingly humble and has a heart of gold, as evident by her loves of animals. Damn, I would have loved to have hooked up with her back in the 70s! I wouldn't even care about the money angle, although it certainly would be nice. Lol! But if I had the choice, I would jump at the chance, whether she had money or not.

from wikipedia : Emmett Louis Till (July 25, 1941 - August 28, 1955) was a 14-year-old African American boy who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman, Carolyn Bryant, in her family's grocery store. The brutality of his murder and the fact that his killers were acquitted drew attention to the long history of violent persecution of African Americans in the United States.
