perry92964 Gelatine was centuries old and Jello was half a century old and had already been through a super-popular phase earlier in the century. What made things Jello popular in the 50's was a combination of some women staying in the workplace after WWII while many had gone home and gone back to households that more convenience devices so they were often bored. Marketing and ad agencies took advantage of this with huge ad campaigns with weird recipes using convenience food that required more time and energy to make then the foods prepared according to package directions. Like the weird Tiktok food trend, but 1950s style.

I can totally see this being served at some sort of church ladies' function in the 1960s, along with about 20 other kinds of Jello salad. My mom (a church lady in the 1960s) was always making Jello salads for things, but I don't think even she would have gone this far. Put chunks of melon IN the Jello, yes. But not put the Jello in the melon. (I loved Jello as a kid, but despised Jello salads unless they had the little colored marshmallows in them.)

it was sort of everywhere even in the nineties, I ate quite a bit of jell-o as a kid, and I have no idea why, it's really kind of gross, isn't it? in Hungary where I currently live (I spent my childhood in the US) it's not really a thing unless it's on a specific dessert where it's fruits suspended in the stuff over a spongecake and in jelly-filled xmas candies which is like a thick jell-o surrounded by powdered sugar and a layer of chocolate, both are kind of weird but not objectively awful lol

Actually gelatin towers were the centerpieces of dinners as early as 1910s up to the 70s. Also, gelatin and ice cream were seen as dessert of affluent people back in the day. Actually, on the dinner menu of the Titanic the night it sank, they ate a gelatin with peaches and french vanilla ice cream as tenth course (dessert) along with waldorf pudding.

Thanks for the memories. I grew up with the (60's staple version) book, and enjoyed looking at the colorful pages. Try Sawdust Salad sometime.

I had that jello recipe book! Just a slightly different cover. I made several of those recipes back in the 70's and was recently thinking about them. I would love to make them again. They were recipes that included whipped cream. Yum!

A melon with frosting and jello in the inside, well that’s a unique concept. You make the most interesting things

If you "iced" that with Cool Whip instead, that would be BOMB.

My grandma used to pour sausage gravy over cantaloupe slices and serve it for breakfast. I loved it as a kid-I haven’t had it in years.

This reminded me of what my mom used to prepare for us for "desert" cantaloupe filled with cottage cheese topped with canned fruit cocktail with the smallest drizzle of the cocktail syrup

You cook and prepare food so effortlessly Emmy! I hope that is at least partly due to editing or else I'll feel really bad that I'm such a mess in the kitchen 😂 Love all your videos! I always look forward to new ones ❤🧡💛🧡❤

Love all the retro Jello recipes. Also, would love to see an episode on Watergate Salad - the unearthly fluff on my family Thanksgiving table well into the 2000s. One of the more successful creations of the era.

It is weird how tastes transports one back in time. Unglazed chocolate cake with warm custard reminds me of my nursery-school days where I first had it.

i think food might be a good way to recall a memory because taste is tied to scent, and scent-based memories are some of the strongest we have.

the parsley totally brought me back to going to diners and supper club type places with my parents in the early 80s and there was always a parsley garnish on the plate. Also, I'm grateful that it was cream cheese on the outside, and not mayo. :)
