RIP to the great Desmond Doss a true American hero 🙏

Fun fact: Andrew Garfield is about 5'10 and over 160 to 165 pounds. The real Desmond Doss was rumored to have never broke 145 pounds and was about 5'5 tall. So you have to picture someone shorter and smaller built than Andrew carrying all those men over distances that equaled football fields. He truly was one of the bravest and a miracle man.

I was a US Navy Hospital Corpsman, counterpart to Doss' Army Medic. His story was well known to me. Few things to point out, by the time they were in Okinawa, Doss had already proven himself to his men. Decorated for bravery twice for his actions in the Philippines and on Guam. The escarpment that is the Hacksaw Ridge is 400 feet tall. Doss' battle was 5-6 DAYS not seemingly overnight as depicted. Doss himself believed he rescued no more than 25 men. Brass wanted to say 100. They compromised on 75. After the war, battalion records show 140-150 men saved by Doss. Many many years later when I was stationed in Okinawa, I stood on Hacksaw. It is now a Peace Park dedicated to Doss. The importance of that moment still gives me chills. As for the Japanese side. Interviews with soldiers reported seeing Doss. They also reported that when they shot at him either their weapon jammed or they missed completely.

A few minor points. This was Desmond's third campaign. He had already been awarded a bronze medal with "V" (valor) device for Guam and the same for the Philippines. They did find his bible, but it was after Hacksaw Ridge. Desmond had already left the island by then. His men searched for it after they had already been relieved and could have left. It was given back to him by Capt. Glover at the White House.

I say this nearly every chance I get, but Hugo Weaving deserved the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of Desmond's dad.

Mel Gibson said they had to scale the movie back because they felt audiences wouldn't believe everything Desmond did.

I can't even imagine carrying 75 wounded men. I had to train carrying/dragging dummies as a firefighter and I'll tell you carrying/dragging one 175lb dummy 100ft is exhausting. Imagine 75!! It actually blows my mind he was physically able to do that.

I can't even imagine how insanely brutal trench warfare was... Thousands of deaths to gain a few feet at a time, sometimes only inches at a time. No man's land is probably one of the most scary and deadly places to be in human history.

There is one thing the movie got wrong the men under Desmond's care already knew he wasn't a coward as he had already been awarded two Bronze stars with "V" device for valor under fire months before Hacksaw. He also did a lot of stuff not shown in the movie but listed in his MoH citation. Desmond Doss Medal of Honor citation "He was a company aidman when the 1st Battalion assaulted a jagged escarpment 400 feet high. As our troops gained the summit, a heavy concentration of artillery, mortar, and machine-gun fire crashed into them, inflicting approximately 75 casualties and driving the others back. Pfc. Doss refused to seek cover and remained in the fire-swept area with the many stricken, carrying them one by one to the edge of the escarpment and there lowering them on a rope-supported litter down the face of a cliff to friendly hands. On 2 May, he exposed himself to heavy riflejpp and mortar fire in rescuing a wounded man 200 yards forward of the lines on the same escarpment; and two days later he treated four men who had been cut down while assaulting a strongly defended cave, advancing through a shower of grenades to within eight yards of enemy forces in a cave's mouth, where he dressed his comrades' wounds before making four separate trips under fire to evacuate them to safety. On 5 May, he unhesitatingly braved enemy shelling and small-arms fire to assist an artillery officer. He applied bandages, moved his patient to a spot that offered protection from small-arms fire, and, while artillery and mortar shells fell close by, painstakingly administered plasma. Later that day, when an American was severely wounded by fire from a cave, Pfc. Doss crawled to him where he had fallen 25 feet from the enemy position, rendered aid, and carried him 100 yards to safety while continually exposed to enemy fire. On 21 May, in a night attack on high ground near Shuri, he remained in exposed territory while the rest of his company took cover, fearlessly risking the chance that he would be mistaken for an infiltrating Japanese and giving aid to the injured until he was himself seriously wounded in the legs by the explosion of a grenade. Rather than call another aidman from cover, he cared for his own injuries and waited five hours before litter bearers reached him and started carrying him to cover. The trio was caught in an enemy tank attack and Pfc. Doss, seeing a more critically wounded man nearby, crawled off the litter and directed the bearers to give their first attention to the other man. Awaiting the litter bearers' return, he was again struck, this time suffering a compound fracture of one arm. With magnificent fortitude he bound a rifle stock to his shattered arm as a splint and then crawled 300 yards over rough terrain to the aid station. Through his outstanding bravery and unflinching determination in the face of desperately dangerous conditions Pfc. Doss saved the lives of many soldiers. Amazingly there were a lot of things in the real story written or toned down because if they had put it into the movie, they didn't think that viewers would have believed it. Desmond's accomplishments weren't just at Hacksaw Ridge. They spanned across the entire time he served in the Pacific. One rumor/example being the testimony from a Japanese sniper who had Desmond in their sights. This sniper tried to kill and shoot Desmond 4 times but every time, his rifle jammed and wouldn't fire. As if Desmond was protected by the supernatural

Mel makes beautiful horrific true type or True story movies. Passion of the Christ, Braveheart, Once we were Soldiers,this, The Patriot, and others u will be glad to know, the guy with the blown up legs lived a long healthy life! My dad had me when he was older. He fought the Japanese. Wounded thru and thru, spleen shot. I saw the scars. He told me how he patched himself up on a battlefield with mud leaves torn t-shirt and first aid bandage. He said he wasn't going to lay there, and get picked up by Japanese, while waiting for a medic. He kept fighting until the battle was over, then pulled himself to the aid station. He told me a few stories of japanese brutality. A real ww2 hero, but he hated the Japanese for a very long time.

The little fight scene between Desmond & his brother brought back a memory or two.I'ma '70s kid,the older kids would watch us younger ones fight when it got to that point & not break it up,then after make us shake hands,weird,but it was like that;) We couldnt not shake hands or the older dudes would punch the hell outcha & say, "shake his d@mn hand". The good ole days Lol:)

In the final scene, the real Desmond has the Congressional Medal of Honor being put around his neck... by President Harry S Truman.

It still boggles my mind that the film didn't win the Academy Award.

The amazing part is Mel Gibson watered-down down Doss's heroics. After being wounded. Doss's Litter crew fell under heavy fire. Forcing the crewmen to take cover. While taking cover Doss saw a wounded soldier out in the open. Doss rolled off his stretcher, and drug himself to the wounded soldier. Doss quickly started tending to the soldier's wounds. When asked why Gibson chose to leave this out. Gibson said "The audience would think that it's all just Hollywood fantasy"

Some other true type or True story movies are 13 hours, Lone Survivor, once we were Soldiers, Blackhawk Down, Fury, Dunkirk, Thin Red Line, Unbroken, Big Red One, Hamburger Hill, American sniper, Saving Private Ryan ,1917, and too many others to say. Also type in here, for maybe the greatest soldier of all time! Type in Roy Benevides the Lazarus Soldier! I met him once when I was stationed at Bragg! Desmond actually saved many more, performed more miraculous deeds to even be believed, and even put in for another CMH!

50% Of the story was shown in this movie. He saved 150+ Amercian and Japanese soldiers. The battle lasted for 9 full days. He carried, dragged and lowered bodies and people for days and nights. He was injured, but he refused to take a stretcher from someone else who could use it more. He continued to help people when he was injured, he refused to leave the battleground until they won the fight. When the battle was won he received treatment for his injury. They didn't wanna show his full story, because they didn't think people would believe his story. They already thought this was too much for people to believe in.

They actually had to scale back some of the stuffs that the real Desmond Doss did because the director Mel Gibson thought that the audience would find it unrealistic

The battle was so heavy and intense there still major signs of it everywhere. That was in the mid 90's my son was there recently with the Navy just last year. He says it's still very obvious. That ridge was around 400 ft high. Imagine climbing that under those horrific conditions. Then trying to get back down before being killed. After learning more about it. I am amazed anyone survived that slaughter.

I will make a suggestion to watch the movie about the first Conscientious Objector who was awarded the Medal of Honor. The movie was made in 1941 starring Gary Cooper. The Movie Sergeant York is about Alvin York's life and finding God then being drafted for WWI. Where Desmond Doss is the first Conscientious Objector who refused to use a weapon, Sergeant York used his rifle to save lives.

there is a couple of stories on you tube about desmond, his army career, desmond saved more tha 75, it reconed to be over 100, and he did many other acts, they decided o 75 and not to show, full story, and they thought it would not be believed by the audience, also know there was a figure put forward when he recieved his medal, im not sure what that was, the sinper shot that hit his helment, im going to say that is in reference to a sniper who was interviewed, and he said he had desmond in his sights, he tried a few times, but his rifle would not fire. how accurate all this is i guess, we can only go from the history and the stories

Ghoul was played by Damian thomilson who lost his legs in Afghanistan and Mel Gibson wanted him for this movie the film was made on a farm in western Sydney and I’m the dead soldier on the truck it was a fun experience especially since my friend Damian was in it with me and I got to hang out with Mel Gibson

Forget the fictional propaganda, Saving Private Ryan. Hacksaw Ridge is the greatest WW2 movie ever made and thats largely because its based on a true story. And the telling of Desmond Doss' incredible story was LONG overdue.

the Battle of Okinawa lasted 85 days. 12,500 American men died taking that island. It is now the home base of the 3rd Marine Division.

My father was there, frontline Marine rifleman 6th div 22nd reg carried a BAR wounded on May 10th patched up and put back on the line...
