Something undervalued is that Luffy looks sanji right in the eye the entire time as he gets hit, essentially telling sanji he sees through him

this is one of the moment the proves that Luffy has a high Emotional intelligence (EQ) and he keeps showing them from the start until now.

You can even feel the emotions of Mayumi Tanaka (Luffy's VA) in that voice crack

Luffy said he would starve to death. Remember, Sanji is a person who cooks rice even for his enemies. For Sanji, starving to death is crueler than any other death. Luffy knows this and dares to say so. This can only be done if both parties trust each other.

My guy tanked all of this without haki after fighting a Commander for about 12 hours.

The fact that Luffy learned how bad it feels to fight against your own crew when he fought Usopp, and now he does nothing and says that Sanji is the one suffering (because he knows how it feels). That's pure character development.

This is one of the best moments in one piece. Sanji pushing his captain and crew away so they won't get hurt and he can endure this alone, Luffy seeing right through him the whole time, the dedication he has for Sanji, Nami feeling betrayed, obviously, it's difficult for her to trust someone and Sanji broke her trust here beating their captain. Perfect character writing, how can some people say that Oda lost his touch after timeskip?

i really love this scene not alot get why sanji did what he did, sanji is a selfless man and he think lowly of himself and thats why he resisted luffy not because he thinks luffy cannot help him but because sanji think he is not worth the trouble.. sanji only cook for the others and fight for the others. and thats why luffy said he will starve himself to death because he know sanji cant resist to help another person he abused that fact and when he came, he cornered him after the punch and told him what does SANJI want not the others and then he cried.. because for the first time he said what does he want.. to return to sunny, but since he is selfless person he cannot let his family die even though he hates them. thats why sanji is my fav character :) sorry for my poor english

People getting mad at Sanji... Are they seriously unable to realize that what he does is the best choice? If he goes with the straw hats he will lose his arms and his real father will get hurt. If he tells them he's a prisoner and asks them for help they will get attacked by vinsmokes and big mom will come to kill him.

Me encanta ver las series y analizar a los personajes, y para eso se debe tomar en cuenta su pasado, Zoro, de todos los Mugiwaras es quien menos "sufrio" tomando eso como subjetivo y se caracteriza por tener una personalidad super rígida y diligente, como lo sería un Samurai, que eran capaces de todo por sus señores, pero Sanji no es así, el fue un niño maltratado física y emocionalmente lo cual lo lleva a ser alguien altamente vulnerable, ya que cuando una víctima vuelve a revivir el trauma y la sensación de indefención es como que volviera a ser ese niño maltratado sin control de nada, Sanji ama a sus amigos, pero siente que no puede pelear y que es una causa perdida rebelarse ante lo que lo oprime, es indefención aprendida, no es que sea desleal, es que no encuentra salida más que esa. Luego están, por ejemplo, Nami, ella se acostumbro a vivir como una gato callejero, sobreviviendo sola y sin llorar, gritar o pedir ayuda, porque también aprendió que nadie acudiría a su rescate, que tenía que pelear sola, es por eso que le costó tanto pedirle a Luffy que la ayudara, es por eso que sintió terror y "traicionó" a Luffy para volver a Arlong Park, es como si tuviera grilletes en las muñecas sin tenerlos realmente, por eso, sería bueno que se fijaran en los detalles, Nami solo comienza a confiar completamente en Luffy luego de Skypia, cuando él alza la voz y le dice que no debería mostrarse de esa forma tan patética siendo la nakama del futuro rey de los piratas, entregándole de nuevo su sombrero como en Arlong Park, eso muestra que Luffy tiene una gran inteligencia emocional, siendo capaz de regular las emociones de sus amigos, en ese caso con Nami, a través de su sombrero, que la hace sentir segura, lo mismo pasa con Sanji, que al escuchar las palabras de Luffy, que es su lugar seguro, siente esperanza, pero no es capaz de dejar ese miedo atrás. Todos los Mugiwaras apoyan y son leales a Luffy, pero también hay que tomar contextos y personalidad, como en el caso de Ussop, ya que él desde el comienzo no aceptó a Luffy como su capitán, Ussop realmente quería ser capitán y veía a Luffy como solo un amigo, un igual, lo que no es malo, son Nakamas, pero también es su Capitán, solo cuando liberan a Robin y Luffy le pide a Ussop, con voz firme que queme la bandera, es que Ussop lo ve como su capitán. Ni que hablar de Robin, eso ni siquiera se debería considerar traición.
