Hope I'm not speaking out of turn but just for clarify: The SP-1 was originally designed to be used with our DC-1 DAC. We have a lot of users that use the DC-1 as a dedicated preamp which is limited to only having 1 Analog input. We got a lot of customer feedback that they wished it had more analog inputs so we created the SP-1 for those that would like to add more analog options including a Phono Pre to their DC-1. The SP-1 remote allows users to cycle through the inputs and control the volume of the DC-1 without having to use the DC-1 remote. In return, the DC-1 remote can cycle through the inputs of the SP-1. The SP-1 can be used to add additional analog inputs to other brands preamps where the user might have run out of available analog inputs as well.

@@ZReviews Yeah but they have discoed the DC-1 all that was available recently was refurbed units.ASR (Amir) dumped all over build quality said the crappy caps wouldn't go distance and the thing was dangerous in terms of bad ground.Sucks too because in addition to what the world needs now is not only love sweet love but half size component stacks. You could use a Schiit Sys $50 volume I suppose.Guess the Sprout 100 is better deal.Also they had a good XLR out CD player that was right price and now is $600 with add on inputs.Why is it that folks like Emotiva have the right goods at right price then screw with it.

Hi, can you please clarify the exact Icepower module used in the PA-1. Emotiva online spec says ACS300, but ICEpower website says that the 300ASC was replaced with the newer 300AS1. So which one is used in the PA-1? Also, is the PA-1 module better than the ICEpower 250ASX2 (assuming BTL mono operation)? Howcome the ASX2 series have a heartsink but the AS series doesn't? You cant tell which series is superior from the data available on the Icepower website... Thanks

The SP-1 was designed to work with the Stealth DC-1 DAC which has a volume control and analog input. Its essentially a twist on the usual preamp-dac setup. Usually the signal boost, volume control and analog input switcher are in the same unit and that is a traditional preamp. Emotiva put the signal boost and volume control on the DC-1 dac and put a passive switcher in the SP-1 with a phono stage. Its the same thing just with the features shuffled between the devices. Zeos they maybe thought you'd do this review with the DC-1 dac because you have reviewed it before.

i really should make a comment about this review, been waiting for a long time for zeos to get around to it. first i want to comment on some misconceptions: THD is not high on those icepower modules, its just that emotiva wanted to say its 140 watt by using higher THD, it is perfectly capable to get 120 watt at 0.1% THD. i also want to mention that the clicking noise is not acceptable, and one fix that might be possible, is to disable the auto standby feature since that is what causing it. i got a icepower poweramp myself and that also have that auto standby feature and even tho it dont make any noise it is still a broken feature. if you get the proper manual with blueprint i found that you can disable it by bridging 2 pins. it is now always on. some of the more experienced reviewers that had this emotive pa-1 amp said it was the best sounding amp they make. but as zeos said, you need a good preamp, preferably with balanced out. its basically high end amp and should be reviewed like it. there is not excuse for emotiva sending a control unit without volume control...... but then emotiva don't have a stereo preamp with balanced output. so next step is surround processor with balanced out. they should at least sent zeos that instead.

The SP-1 are just an ICEPower 300ASC in a housing. That would be where the story ends, but the SP-1 is about the cheapest way you can, as a consumer, get your hands on a 300ASC amplifier module. And sometimes what you need is a basic, very basic, amplifier module to expand your system and you don't want to shell out for a whole XPA chassis, or you know you like the sound of the ICEPower modules and want to put them into a system with a stereo pre-amp like the XSP-1 or BasX PT-100, or a home theater processor like the XMC-1. I hear you about the Control Freak knobs. That and the DC-1 dropped off the face of the earth before their time was finished. The Emotiva products that are worth having (to me) are the DC-1, Control Freak unbalanced version, TA-100, and XPA gen 3 series. (And I happen to have all of those listed.) I'd also take the new BasX A-100 for driving headphones. The Stealth SP-1 was designed to hang off the analog input of a DC-1 and expand it to a full "Stealth Stack", but the DC-1 was canned in anticipation of a DC-2 DAC that didn't materialize.

Those red power cables can't really be 10AWG conductors like the Amazon listing says. 10AWG wire is 6mm in diameter, and they have a photo that measures overall diameter of the cable to be 17mm. 3 x 6 > 17!...And that doesn't add in the extra girth for insulators and shielding! I'm guessing the conductors are only ~14AWG each. Zeos, or other owners, want to take one apart and give us the proof.

Looks as though both Emotiva and PS Audio have both gone with sterile, lifeless and harsh sounding ICE modules. These companies must be getting a great deal on them since there is no other reason to use them. I purchased the new version of the Sprout integrated several months ago. After listening to it connected to my Tekton Pendragons, I was immediately ready to send it back after only a few minutes of listening. I don't think any amount of "break in" would improve the sound of that thing. When it comes to Class D, I haven't heard anything that sounds better to my ears than the Hypex modules...not just the Ncores, but also their OEM modules.
@V1ralB1ack
@V1ralB1ack 5 жыл бұрын
You gotta cut class d's some slack. Yes hypex ncore are the best class d's but the icepower are a solid #2. Class d amps have come a long way. Of course a class a or class ab with a high class a bias is best but for the convenience and price they do have a place. Maybe for home theater use or if an integrated amp is needed in a small space? With that being said I have a Nad D 3045 and it uses hypex class d's.
@alexanderjellison3063
@alexanderjellison3063 5 жыл бұрын
ICEpower modules can sound very good if properly implemented and fine tuned. I run the PS Audio mono blocks with the ICE 700ASC modules and they are a long ways from being sterile, lifeless, and harsh. They're completely neutral and ridiculously powerful running my 4 ohm speakers. They do some stuff on the analog input side to change the sound to get rid of the typical Class D traits. I totally agree with you about the sonic tuning of their other products though. I had their gain cell dac/preamp, and it sounded very harsh and sibilant with boosted highs. Was not impressed at all and sent it back. These emotivas though are basically a DIY setup with an ICEpower module in a box, and no fine tuning on the input. Might sound very stereotypical Class D. I was checking these out last week for my other setup and I decided to look into a pair of Apollon amps with the Ncore modules for a little more money.

@@alexanderjellison3063 so, I am very curious what preamp you are using with the PS Audio M700 monoblocks and with what speakers? I now own the PSA SGCD (after my Theta preamp and trying Parasound) and am feeding the little Emotiva PA-1 monoblocks via balanced XLR into my 4ohm Vienna Acoustics Mozart Grands and prefer the sound to my Adcom 555 mkII monoblocks and my Anthem A5 amp. I think the PA1's are a sonic bargain and after my research, I felt they would be very similar to the PA Audio class D amps.

1. Can you hear the ticking with music, as in a silent part of a track or in between tracks? Can you hear it from about 8 feet away? 2. Nobody is going put 300W monoblock power amps on a desk setup. 3. This is the same amp module with same specs as used in the $2,500 Bel Canto monoblocks and the same as PS Audio uses in the Stellar amp, $800 mono or $1600 or stereo. 4. Power amps do not have volume control, that is an integrated amp. The Bel Canto mono's (same ASC300 Class D amp modules!) are currently Class A on Stereophile's list of Recommended Components. 5. What the hell is Rocky Mountain? Is that like Fitz Pass? Gotta secret? 6. Check THD on a $10K Mark Levinson, it's .1%. Emotiva rates THD at full power like Crown and QSC, not at 1 watt like Sony or JVC. You should have used XLR that is what it's made for. Good review otherwise?

Quite simply they sent you the wrong thing. They make preamps and should have sent you one of those.

i would say that they don't make a preamp suited for that class d amp. they don't have a balanced stereo preamplifier.

These amps are a fail. The a-300 I have for $200 less will run circles around these. I think emotiva rushed these out to have a class d product to fill a void in their product line.
