I don’t know, EMP and CME fills every inch of the entire atmosphere with voltage. With that fact, every single wire, cable etc will be effected not just the main battery cables and leads coming into your house. The blanket completely covering your vehicle may work but it might be easier to just build an faraday garage. The sure-fire way to go is an old vehicle (pre 1975) and store a spare battery, points/condenser, starter, alternator and spark plugs in a cage. Some alternaters have the regulator built in but some cars had them on the fender well or fire wall.

How does a repeat of the carrington event compare with a nuclear EMP strength? My inkling is that the event would be more distributed with less intensity, less likely to cause problems with cars and likely to nuke transformers on the end of long transmission lines.

We are looking at broad band ferrites on the solar panel end, they may also be enclosed in metal conduit. How would you modify your recommendations for this type of installation. I'm not sure how much room is available in the inverter to be able to put ferrites on those wires. You have a very good set of videos to educate us in power protection.

@Dr. Bradley - I have a basic question about something that I’m sure you can help clarify. I have a solar generator that I use to power most of my home with. After taking your advice, I installed a hi sat. ferrite between the inverter and switch, plus an in-line filter and two broadband ferrites between inverter and panels. My question is this: is it necessary to have a protective cover or barrier around my solar generation system while it is operating? In other words, what is to stop an EMP blast from damaging the electronics of my generator the same way it would damage other electronic devices that are in operation; devices that are simply exposed to the magnetic pulse and are not protected by a faraday cage?

I have a portable back-up power system rechargeable via portable solar panels (Bluetti AC500/B300s with multiple expansion batteries) that remains disconnected from the grid. The system doesn't sit on concrete; it sits on a carpeted floor in a bedroom. Is covering it with the conductive cloth going to offer protection? If so, should I also insert a TRAP AC in each of the 3 AC outlets?
@johnbauman4005
@johnbauman4005 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dr. Bradley, Really great presentation, as always. By the time I finish all your videos and doing background reading to grasp the physics, I should be at least MA eligible in EE anyway! You have mentioned several times about shielding the small portable indoor generators by covering them with conducting cloth and allowing it to fully contact the concrete floor. What if non concrete floor - linoleum, vinyl tile, wood, laminate, etc? My brother lives in an apartment and is buying such a generator with solar panels to recharge it. Oh, and what if the apartment is not on the ground floor? I have recommended a cigarette lighter Trap. Does he need a Trap AC also, or is one of the two enough? Which is preferred? I guess he needs BB ferrites at each end of the solar panel cable as well. ATB! John
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, the cloth provides quite a bit of benefit even in elevated structure, such as an apartment building. The reason is that the bulk of the energy is coming from above, and the cloth will act as a reflector and absorber for RF energy. It's not quite as good as on a concrete floor, but still very helpful. As for the T.R.A.P.s, I really think it's worth putting one in the cigarette plug and one in the AC socket if both exist on the generator. That helps to protect both the input and output sides of the inverter. If the system is connected to panels, then yes, broadband ferrites on the power cord are also recommended. If it's unplugged, there's not need, although it certainly won't hurt.

Thank you for your videos -- I appreciate you very much! 🤗 I need to learn abt affordable ways in which to safely & effectively reduce EMF exposure in the home. The goal would be to have the bedrooms & at least half of our living space EMF free. There seems to be a lot of external sources in our neighborhood, as well as inside sources due to: wifi, cell phones, gaming devices, etc. I sleep terribly & my familys health & overall wellbeing has deteriorated significantly since moving to our current location in 2010. As odd as it sounds, the only time I sleep well & feel healthy is when there is a power outage. I have a science degree, so this is not a conclusion I came to lightly. Do you have any reliable resources that could help my family (and others) learn about that?

Dr. Bradley, I have already done most of your protocols to protect my home from an EMP. Regarding a solar system, please clarify how to protect the microinverters on the roof under the panel on the roof. Would ferrites be clipped over the wires between the PV panels and the microinverters on the roof, or clipped onto multiple wires in the junction box in the attic where wires from the microinverters are combined? My main concern is protecting the individual microinverters because if they are taken out, the solar system is useless.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, while some people just put larger ferrites at the combiner boxes, I personally think that also putting small broadband ferrites on the wires feeding into and out of each microinverters is a very good protective step. As you said, you really don't want to lose them. Depending on the size of your system, it might require quite a few broadband ferrites, but the smaller ones aren't terribly expensive, considering the importance of the system. If putting ferrites outdoors, you might also tape them closed with some good weatherproof tape. That helps to keep the sun, rain, snow, etc. from weathering the plastic housings over time.

I don't think people understand the potential surge level in a high intensity EMP scenario. It will short across and overload any ferrite, circuit breaker or commercial surge suppressor product. A massive isolation transformer may do something but it depends on the strength of the EMP.

Because the way I was thinking about it, if the power isn’t traveling through to the outlet, wouldn’t that also mean that the plug cannot absorb those extra transients because the switch has effectively severed the connection from the circuits to the plug? If it's a simple generator without any kind of complex electronic control or display and it's not plugged into the wall, then it's very unlikely to be damaged. Some people cover them with conductive cloth for added protection, but generators like that are not very susceptible. If it uses a trickle charger, try to keep it unplugged when not charging, and put a broadband ferrite on the charging cord.

It's possible that an EMP would indeed damage the battery monitoring systems (BMS) within the batteries. You can add high-saturation ferrites on the main battery power wires and TRAP-Bs across the batteries to help reduce transients felt at the batteries. It's a trade between better performing batteries and increased risk. Personally, I think if you take the precautions, the risk is worth it.

Question....If an E.M.P. is large enough to take out the house power...it will probably be gone at the source as well...so...even the surge protector won't keep your power on. Right? My concerns are with electronics that I will need to rely on that will need to run on battery power (auto / comms / computer / solar etc.) since the generators will most likely be gone.

The surge protector won't keep your lights on for sure. It's purpose is to prevent damage to your electronics so that you can take advantage of brief stints when power might come up. Also, it allows you to hook up backup power (i.e., solar and generators).

Will the Siemens FS140 maintain protection if there are multiple EMP attacks?
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 2 жыл бұрын
This is a complicated question because SPDs (like the FS140) will protect from multiple E1/E2s, but they won't survive an E3. So, you'd need to open the breaker before the E3 pulse grew too large to damage the SPD.

Hi Dave, CMEs and EMPs have some similarities and some differences. On the plus side, small-scale electronics that aren't plugged in won't be affected by a CME. On the minus side, anything plugged in will perhaps be damaged, which is why surge protection becomes so important.

Why would you need a separate device for ground and neutral on your house when they are connected TOGETHER? One would suffice.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper Жыл бұрын
Yes, they are tied together at the panel for safety, but on many homes they are routed into the home on separate wires. That means that currents can flow into that junction from either of the two wires. If your home only has a single shared neutral/ground (like my home), you only need three high-saturation ferrites (L1, L2, N/G).

After installing them my self I still feel bamboozled on the cars considering that there is no true ground since only the tires make contact with the ground. Any chance we can get your opinion on this product EMP SHIELD. They have a website, KZfaq channel and available on Amazon too. Also if cables or big copper ground straps were connected to the frame and drug on the ground could that help improve emp survivability with what I have or with what you've shown for the vehicles. also I have a diesel with two batteries under the hood behind each headlight if it makes a difference.

Have any of your solutions been tested against the appropriate Mil Specs? If so, what were the results? Thanks
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
The appropriate mil specs are MIL-188-125-1/2 and MIL-461/RS105. The short answer is that no, they have not been tested to them. I'm hoping to do so, but it's complicated by the fact that the T.R.A.P.s are protective devices. It's easy (albeit expensive) to simply show that the devices survive - no doubt in my mind that they will. The tricky part is that what you really want to know is if they protect the item they are plugged into. To do that, you'd need to set up a test of say 10 identical items that were first shown to be EMP susceptible, and then plug in the devices and show that they now survive. That's a big undertaking, and even then, you've only demonstrated it on one particular electronic item (perhaps a generator or car). Each generator or car is different, so showing one doesn't necessarily prove full protection for another. I will say that I think testing would be very helpful, but actually doing it in a meaningful way is rather complicated. With all that said, I have reached out to three different EMP test facilities to get quotes on running tests.

I haven't looked at this in much detail, but I would think it's very much like protecting a standby generator. You'd want to put ferrites on the power wires out at the turbine and another one where the power feeds back into the home. If there are control electronics out at the turbine, you'd probably need to consider protecting that as well. If you send me an email, I can try to help (arthur@disasterpreparer.com).

As usual, thanks for the info. I was curious how you know the difference between broadband ferrites and other types. For instance I bought a bag of various sized clip on ferrites on Amazon a couple years ago and was wondering if I need to buy yours instead. Also my laptop has a ferrite built into the power cord, do I need to put your ferrite on it as well? I put ferrites on a bunch of electronics in my home office, including ham radio gear, in hopes of reduce EMI on my HF rig. Things like wall warts, as you know, are notorious for creating noise. I would like EMP protection (as much as ferrites provide) and EMI filtering.
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
Ferrites are made of different materials to offer protection over different frequency bands. The ones I sell are broadband, meaning that they offer protection across a very wide frequency range. I chose those because an EMP has energy from relatively low to quite high frequencies. I don't know what material the ones on your laptop has, but it's likely for lower frequencies. You can buy ferrites really cheap, but often you don't know what the frequency responses are.
@Devin82m
@Devin82m 3 жыл бұрын
OK, that helps. So would your wideband ferrites most likely cover most or part of the frequency any cheap ferrites cover? I didn't think about the fact they could cover certain frequencies, which is helpful for ham radio. Thanks!
@disasterprepper
@disasterprepper 3 жыл бұрын
@@Devin82m It would depend on the particular ferrite you bought. Some offer lower frequency suppression, some very high. The broadband ferrites offer protection from perhaps1 MHz to 1 GHz and above. Frequencies lower than a 1 MHz won't couple into short cables very well, so ferrites used in lower regions like that are more for power supply design.
