I thought for so long that I had high empathy just because I care a lot about others. Nope, turns out I have low empathy but high compassion. Didn't even know those were different things until my best friend who has NPD told me

I have an extreme amount of empathy, to the point that I couldn't distinguish other's emotions from my own when I was younger. I have nothing but respect for those who lack empathy and still choose to do the right thing.

I’ve rather low what I like to call usable empathy (I can feel what others feel to some extent, but not to the point of it actually being notable or useable) but higher end sympathy, and there’s a difference between being low empathy and a dickass!

@@energeticgorilla that’s entirely dependent on your personal definition of good/bad person. Do you define it in intention or in action? How do your actions affect other people? Are you willing to consider changing them when they are harmful to others? (ETA that these questions were intended for self reflection, I don’t want answers) My previous comment was mostly to reassure the OP that the song is about being a d*ck, not having a hard time judging what another person is feeling.

@@energeticgorilla I don’t really see it as black and white, but generally a good person would operate on good intentions. Weather they can feel why their actions can make another person cry is irrelevant so long as they recognize the cause and effect and adjust accordingly.

I also have low empathy, and it is no excuse for not being a decent human being. I still try to be a good person, and try to be kind. Having no empathy isn’t an excuse to be cruel like some of these politicians.

Yeah I agree sociopathy should not be demonized. Most people with sociopathy actually don't even know that they have it. And sociopathy comprises less than 2% of the world population. However a politician's lack of empathy stems from not their neurochemistry but the position that they are in. They are in a position where they can make money and hold office for longer by doing unempathetic things and demonizing certain groups of people. Does this mean that they lack empathy in their normal lives? Probably not they probably love their children and probably loved their spouses if they have any. But the position that they're put in to be a politician encourages them to turn that empathy off so that they can be a politician.

You may not care what a random internet stranger has to say, but I’d argue that whoever convinced you that “hypo empathy will never be accepted” is wrong. I’m not saying that everyone will connect with you and I’m not saying that it will always be easy, but hypo empathetic people can be extremely valuable in situations or professions with a lot of pain/suffering/emotions going around in which hyper empathetic or sometimes even “averagely” empathetic people would be destroyed/broken/unable to function. Also hypo empathetic people can be good for not escalating and even de-escalating situations. And if there’s an emergency, I’d prefer someone hypo empathetic to someone hyper empathetic so that things get done rather then them reacting to others fear, sadness, anger, etc. Depending on your age, you potentially already have a career, but if not or if you aren’t happy there, you may want to try googling professions that are good for people with low empathy or checking out blogs and such. Yeah there are some professions people with low empathy won’t do too well in, but there are also professions that people with high levels of empathy won’t do well in. Please remember/note that lacking empathy is very different than not caring. Don’t get me wrong, some people have both, but people can both care about others and just not automatically or know how to empathize with them. In that case, there are ways to deal with others or “fake” empathy. Honestly Google is a huge help there with what to do when someone feels/is ___. Another thing to remember is that most people just want someone to care and getting used to/ in the habit of asking, “what would help you most now?” can be insanely impactful/helpful. Then they can give you a “task” like “just listen” or “just hold my hand” or “distract me” and you don’t have to understand why or care about it but if you care about the person and it’s something within the scope of reason/your abilities then no skin off your back and may as well try it. (I will say though that one thing to keep in mind is that what works can vary significantly person to person, so I recommend asking them rather than trying to execute a set response.) And if you are concerned in the friend department, there are plenty of people who do better with hypo empathetic people due to what they’ve been through, be it abuse or some other trauma or just being neurodivergent in a way that doesn’t do well with intense or lots of emotions. So since you seem to know you are hypo empathetic, you can go from there and find which people mesh well with you and where you’d do best job-wise.
