Just finished the book, so could finally watch this!! I am sorry that this was such a let down for you. I totally get where you are coming from and I even agree that this objectively suffered from middle book syndrome in terms of plot progression, but to me the reading experience didn't feel pointless at all. I adored the expansion of the world, the deepening of the lore, the development of the interpersonal relationships, and all the crazy twists and turns. Book 3 was easily the weakest part in the book for me and I was immediately nervous about the POV shift, but I ended up loving it in the end. Also, I really am just a sucker for the here comes the cavalry trope hahah. And no, the resurrection wasn't my fave, but I didn't even mind it too much because I was just so swept up in the drama of it all. Also, the moment that Dior was dying and called Gabe 'Papa', I fully lost it lol. Jay's writing is soooo emotionally captivating to me, I love it. Hope that the next instalment can bring it back around for you! Brilliant review/ramble ☺

That’s totally fair! I’m glad you liked it :) I guess it just plucked out my particular pet hates and unfortunately wasn’t able to change my mind on them. I definitely agree that his writing is emotionally captivating. I’m really hoping we get a banger of a finale.

I just finished this book and it is a masterpiece, it never gets boring and pushes you to continue reading it more and more feverishly to see how it continues. I liked it even more than the first book.

Nice. Glad you liked it. The beauty of reading is that it’s subjective and what works for one person doesn’t work for another person.

I'm still under a hundred pages into it. I'll come back and watch when I'm done. Until then, I just wanted to offer an algorithmic bump.

I’m a big fan of this series. First book I felt was far superior to the second. But I really did like the second. Nice job on the overview

Thank you! Totally agree, book was 1 is gold standard fantasy. This one, not so much.

@@Hellsing7747 fair enough! I’ve heard that sentiment more commonly. For me book one was flawless but boom two felt very repetitive. But we like what we like!

Or did Dior's eyes open in the end because she woke up a vampire..

Yep I think so. I guess when I said resurrection trope I meant she’d come back in some form (probably a vampire).

Agreed the book was too long, loved the world, but it was a drag at times. I stayed for the atmosphere and character development.

@@bookswithzara I finished it last night so I came back to watch the full review. I liked the book a lot and didn't feel it suffered so much as you did in comparison with Book 1. The wandering parts actually added to the notion that the characters didn't really know where they were going or what they would encounter ultimately. The introduction of his sister brought a whole new dynamic to the story and allowed us to see the story from her point of view and fill in more of Gabe's backstory. As someone who likes Bernard Cornwell and his battle scenes, Kristoff did a creditable job of the epic battle at the end, very cinematic with exploding walls and gore. Then, of course, the end has set up the next book and I can hardly wait to see what Kristoff has in store for the characters. Although we slightly differ on how successful this book was, I really appreciate your insights and gave me some more to think about.
Popular fantasy series I won't read
