Empire State Building: Lightning Strikes Thrice!

13 жыл бұрынI caught three direct strikes to the Empire State Building lightning rod after midnight on 4/13/11 during a severe thunderstorm. I actually saw a fourth direct hit, but sadly wasn't filming at the time. I've never seen so many hits on the ESB in one night. It was ridiculous! But so much fun to watch.
Whoever said lightning doesn't strike twice was wrong. :)

Edit: The three lightning strikes you see here were filmed during one storm that lasted for roughly 45 minutes. The strikes were spliced together for viewing purposes! And yes, they're real!

***** There is a lightning conductor at the top of the building which was put their on purpose. The conductor is connected to a wire leading all the way to the ground. When lightning strikes it is conducted by the conductor to the ground instead of through the building. That's why the power doesn't go out.

Carl algo Lighting rods attract the lightning. Most buildings have it. That's why it strikes it more than twice. It can't be done without a lighting rod.

The second was actually rare upward lighting (From the tower to the sky rather then the other way around). Congrats on capturing it!

At the start of a storm in 2002, my cousin and I pulled over off Blvd East in Weehawken to watch the ES Building, hoping to see a strike. We soon got one, and we cheered like it was fireworks. Then another. And another. I can't remember how long we stayed (from half an hour to an hour) but we got to about 20 lightning strikes. Amazing. Based on what we saw, I assumed then that this must happen a lot, all the time. Now I'm less sure.

I heard on discovery that when lightning strikes "once" its strikes around 2000 times but its going so fast we can't really see it. I'll have to look it up...

It wouldn't have struck the same place twice or three times, but the tip of the empire state building is made to attract lightning so that it doesn't hit other parts of the building. Although in saying that, the lightning would have struck in very near parts

actually the empire state building was made high with a conductor of electricity at the top to catch lightning bolts so when a storm hits the city doesnt die of lightnings
