Please read this description. (Edit 2015: I haven't been answering comments for a couple of years and probably will continue not to.)
It is recommended that you ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ORIGINAL GAME FILES BEFORE ADDING MODS in the case that it fails to start up. Normally this should not happen unless you've done something wrong or added too many incompatible mods. That is why Mod Manager is recommended for most people when attempting to get several mods working together.
I am not an expert on this matter and all information is based on my own experiences and instructions I've read to get it done for myself. Thus I'd like to note that it is not my fault or responsibility if you screw up your game and it will not start - there are risks to doing this; not serious risks (unless you're very lazy) only minor risks that may involve manually deleting all your ETW files and reinstalling again.

In response to my Prussian ETW video, a couple comments and several messages asking how to get and/or install mods for the game. So this video is basically a visual instruction on the basics of how to install basic mods for ETW, basically.
Use single mod for example, find your own on TWCENTER.NET forums.
Mod Manager 1.5 (or 1.4) required for this method, though there are more than one way of installing mods. This is one of the easiest and least troubling.

I would recommend getting the latest Unit Compatibility Project mod if you are going to be using lots of different unit mods. That way they will run a lot more smoothly together in the game.
If you feel that this basic tutorial does not help you, I would recommend that you try to find more information and read up about it. Total War Center .net should have sufficient information if you're not too lazy to look for it.
Note: If the case happens in which your E:TW game will no longer start up, then you most likely have incompatible mods that you've added. Removing mods that change similar things, changing the load order in the mod manager or finding compatibility patches will help to solve this issue sometimes. If problem persists then an important file has been changed and removed and you will need to reinstall (or use a backup).
Most mods generally go in to your Empire Total War folder (for me it is: Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/etw/data)
In rarer circumstances there will be mods that change files in C:/Users/"username"/AppData/Roaming/The Creative Assembly/empire/scripts (Vista/7)

@CodyBeekmann1 No, I do not know where you can find original files. If you have the game on Steam then you could try right clicking on the game in the Steam game library, select properties, go over to the Local Files tab at the top of that and go down to select Verify Integrity of Game Cache. - Doing this MIGHT get Steam to re-download the changed files, but I cannot guarantee it. Also a chance people could have set up copies of the original files on mod sites. Sorry I couldn't be much help.

@OliverFFS Sorry for late reply. But incase anybody else has this problem the only thing I can think of that would cause that problem in the Mod Manager would be that you haven't started up the game before installing any mods. Doing so will create all necessary extra folders. In rare cases it would be safe to just start a battle or campaign first (without saving) once the vanilla game is installed, THEN install the mods and use the mod manager.

@UglyMuggFilms No, you don't need the mod manager to download mods. It's mainly recommended for getting them to run properly and in order.

@TheGlodje If you have too many it can, especially if they're in an incorrect load order. As with any game that has mods, modifications tend to make the software slightly more unstable than it normally would regardless of how careful mod makers are.

@Vict0r1984 No, your version of Windows shouldn't be the problem (I have 64-bit Windows 7 as well). As I am not fully competent in how every aspect of the Mod Manager works I would check on the twcenter mod forums, search around on Google and see if you get lucky or if you can find out who made it, ask them directly (if you haven't done any of this already). Sorry I couldn't be much help.

@Haugn I'm sure there is, I never tried any other way as they tended to conflict with other mods. If you're only using one or two you should be able to have the mod files in the directory. But it's been a couple years now. (Unless you found a mod that has a bunch of mods combined in to it.)

The checkboxes are for activating and deactivating the mods you want to use (or not use). So if you check a box, it means the mod manager will activate that mod when you start the game.

@UglyMuggFilms There are other ways to use mods with ETW that are more difficult unless you are willing to learn how to do it. But otherwise I'd recommend using the mod manager to play several mods at once. And no, you don't need it to DOWNLOAD them.

The mod loader is primarily for mod organization, so unchecking it there may not stop it from running with the game. You will have to delete the mod files from the Empire Total War directory. Most of the time that should be all you need to do. If that doesn't work either, then try going into the Empire Total War user directory here C:/Users/"username"/AppData/Roaming/The Creative Assembly/empire/. If you can even find any mod files in this area (might not be there), remove them. But be careful.

@shawnmohr1989 I apologize if you didn't understand my tutorial or if you didn't read all of the instructions provided here and on the page where you got the mod. I know that I do not go into complete detail but it is sufficient enough to get the job done for most people. I should have mentioned that everyone should backup their files before adding mods - so I will do that now. I've also added more info to the description that may or may not help with your problem, if you haven't solved it yet.

@professornuclearbomb I do not have Napoleon, though I do have Shogun 2 which uses the same mod installation method (minus the Mod Manager, didn't have one last time I checked.) So I would assume that yes, it does.

Can't really remember. I think the "Main" flags are the ones they originally made, and "Alternative" are mostly the same but a few flags are changed according to what people thought was more historical/looked better. OR, it could be "Main" being the faction's normal flag and "Alternative" being for when they change government type to Republic or Monarchy.

@queluz12 Should just copy your entire game folder and put it somewhere else you can find it easily, so you can copy stuff back over later. I'm sure there are better methods but I do not pay much attention.

Untick the 'show all pack types' in the right column and the check boxes will appear.

You just do the same thing with AUM (and most other mods). But you should also get the Unit Compatibility mod with it if you're also using other custom units.

@shawnmohr1989 Still doesn't work? I'm not entirely sure. Aside from uninstalling it you'd have to delete all the files for it in steam/creative assembly, then the folders and files for it in the all of the Users folders as well. If that doesn't work try cleaning up your computer registry files (CCleaner is good for that.) Might not have been mods though. Could be some sort of software security stopping you from using your games. (Like SecuROM or something. I don't know if ETW has one or not.)

It may be possible one or more of the mods that you are using are conflicting or causing it to crash. If this is the case, turn off all the mods, then run the game while turning them back on one at a time. If one causes you to crash in the load up then that is the problem mod. --- If this isn't the case, I am not sure. One of the mods could also be out of date.

@kenyuan1 Apologies for a late reply, I'm sure you've probably found it by now but: Windows Vista/7: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\empire total war\ Not sure about Windows XP. I'm assuming it would be relatively similar.

plz people i have a problem!it seems my empire total war plays normally ,but when i start a mod it crashes to desktop and creates a mdmp file (crash file)anyone out there knows a solution?i already deleted previous mods and user scripts and saves!damn!

Question. I have a mod and I have mod manager but when I click to check which mods I wish to use it doesn't show up. It does show up if I hit show all pack files and it is a pack file. What am I doing wrong?

Not sure why it would do that. What version are you using? There are many things you could try. Try using the previous version, make sure your firewall/antivirus allows the program to run, try running as administrator, otherwise I have no idea.

Never played the civil war mod, and I haven't played Empire in nearly two years now, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help on knowing what to do for that. Sorry.

@SolexFox: The problem is that I can't check the mods and I can't launch the game with Mod Manager 1.5, 1.4 or 1.3. It worked to check the mods with 1.0, but it still crashed when I started the game. Does it matter that I have a 64 bit version of Windows 7, and might this be the reason the Mod Manager doesn't work properly?

I have installed Mod Manager and when I launched it for the first time it asked me to make a path (or however it's named) to my "empire.exe" so I did that, it could locate my mods, namely: "mod_BSM_4_1_Full_1_5", "mod_fifesndrums" and "mod_WeaponsFX2". I ticked them all on but when I click "launch" the game crashes. Any idea? I have Windows 7

Wha? You just use the Mod Manager's executable from wherever you put it as it doesn't "Install" the program and it's not a mod. Unless you meant to word that differently. You can install most mods using that method, I would assume.

I couldn't say, I haven't played the game since early Windows 7. There may be newer, better methods of mod installation these days, or at least an updated version of the same program.
