Given that it's apparently an American ship (accent of the captain) vs a Revolutionary French ship (large tricolor visible when the engagement begins). This could very well be an engagement from the Quasi-War (1798-1801) which falls within the scope of ETW. and the Bicorn started to appear in large numbers in the 1790s, so it fits. Also, regarding the gun ports being open, the rapid start of combat strongly suggests that one ship was pursuing the other in this weather, and the American captain spotting the French ship came at a time of high alert for both crews.

@@HalfLifeExpert1 It's a first rate ship of the line (3 gun decks). U.S navy did not have first rates in that period. I'd assume it was Royal Navy.
