Thomas has a passion for computer games, and would love to work as a game tester. He also has autism, but is determined to not let that get in the way of finding his dream job.

I hate when office relationships/friendships are forced upon new hires. Anyone would feel weird in that situation. That shouldn't be a requirement for a job, I'm glad they overlooked his awkwardness.

I work in the construction industry and have the same social issues. When he buried his head in his mothers shoulder at the end you tell how overwhelming the day was for him and i can relate to that.

Broke my heart when he said he was just trying to be normal. Absolutely painful to hear someone say that. I am so happy to hear he got a job! If only everyone had opportunities like this. I despise job interviews as someone with severe social anxiety, and I would love an opportunity like this.

As a Senior software engineer I hope this gives anyone with Thomas's condition hope. I would as someone who employs people offer this man more money than anyone of his age, this is not a gesture of kindness but a purely capitalistic one, I cant tell you how many people who don't have his brain we need to have one of him. Programming is all about this sort of attention to detail and objective rationality and reason. I need more of these resumes on my desk...
@kabukisyneri296
@kabukisyneri296 5 жыл бұрын
Instead of giving these people "hope", why not give them a real job in the IT industry? Even an educated neurotypical has a hard time finding a job as a developer, with all the supposed massive shortage of programmers.
@Johnny-wt5uf

There really isn't a shortage of people that can program. There is a shortage of people that are hard working problem solvers. I'm a programmer too, I would hire him without question.

I have only just found this video having watched the Louisa's story which I wrote about too. I had a lot of jobs when I was younger but they never lasted more than a few weeks. I was bullied, shouted at or given the jobs nobody else wanted the horrible, filthy ones. People would not give me time to learn, I wanted to learn. People would make horrible comments about me when I was just being me. As an adult I had a late diagnosis of ASC. It has started to make sense to me. I am now a secondary school (high school) teacher, a career I Love. I am working hard so that someday my students hopefully do not have to struggle too in the workplace and life.

I've applied for 2 years for accounting or secretary jobs. I don't know exactly how many job. About 1-3 jobs per week, so, do the math. Nobody hired me. I started learning web programming on my own at home (I didn't believe I will become a programmer, I was just coding to kill some of the boredom and depression). Now I've been a web dev for 7 years. I have my own house, no debt and 20 years of savings. Yes, I have autism.

Hi Thomas. Very moving story. I hope the work has given you a sense of independence and that you're enjoying it. Hope your parents are well. As Kermit sang it's not easy being green and fading into the background but you had the bravery to be yourself and land yourself a job. Very good achievement.

As an autistic person, I petition for job interviews to be replaced by job trials like this. It’s so frustrating when you know you’d be great at the actual job but you getting the job is dependent on you being able to socially communicate well on the spot (which most autistic people can’t) even when the job has literally nothing to do with social communication.
