Easy, you tell them you were about to pay your employees, when they said "oh no, it breaks my heart to see your poor, struggling soul have to pay little old me, please don't go to so much trouble!"

My former boss did. She told the court that she didn't make enough money to pay us, and if we tried harder as employees, she might be able too. She immediately fired me for filing a complaint with wages at the hearing.

If you're a small business owner and can't afford employees, then don't hire any. Work the business yourself until you can afford to pay or try and get friends or family to volunteer their time.

I volunteered to help out my cousin a few times with his food truck when he was short handed. I offered to take orders so he could just concentrate on cooking and preparing orders. He was appreciative, and he fed me. His business is now thriving and he owns multiple trucks. He’s family. This woman was NO RELATION. She would have to pay me.

Ten dollars an hour in a small boutique was about right for 2018. It was most likely a part time job(less than 20 hours a week) and not meant to be a job that paid her rent. They both agree 400 was owed for 2 months(aprox FIVE hours a week). The Defendant should have taken it to court, not stolen a bunch of clothes. Both parties are pretty shameful.

The first problem is that the plaintiff doesn’t have anything written down or recorded. As a business owner that will be devastating for her. Number two you have to pay your people or you have to work by yourself until you can pay your people. Your passion project is not everyone else’s passion project and people got to eat. Just because you have a chance and having your own business doesn’t mean other people need to sacrifice their welfare for your dreams. She’s not your kid, she’s not your mother, she’s not your friend, and even then, everybody should be paid a fair wage. so many people started business and want to get their business launched, but they don’t want to properly pay the people for helping them. What does she care whether or not you have a dress store? She just wants to do the job of working at fashion, but to be paid and compensated fairly for her efforts.
