In some religions and cultures, young women playing football is practically unthinkable. The Scoring Girls project shows how the sport is helping young women in Germany and Iraq to overcome anxieties.
Hanover-born Tuğba Tekkal, daughter of Kurdish-Yazidi immigrants, defied all the odds to become a professional footballer in the Bundesliga. Now a coach, she founded the Scoring Girls project to offer girls and young women the opportunity to boost their self-esteem. The sport and its team-oriented nature can have therapeutic benefits for the budding sportswomen - many of whom have experienced racism in their everyday lives or faced the trauma of being a refugee.
Maisa and Maisun had to flee Iraq with their parents to escape the horrors of Islamic State rule. In Germany, the Scoring Girls project gave the two sisters a long-forgotten feeling of freedom.
Fears of discrimination and losing their culture prompt some parents to ban football for their daughters - but a growing number of youngsters have an active interest in playing the game.
Tuğba Tekkal also wants her Scoring Girls concept to help girls in Iraq, and has set up a number of local projects in the autonomous Kurdistan region. From refugee camps to big-city surroundings, she's determined to ensure that more young women get the chance to finally play football.

What empowerment, there is no barrier in the first place, as long as there are an audience who are willing to pay. The reality is not many people want to watch women play and this include the majority of women. Its not about equal pay, if you can generate as much money from audience then you deserve as much money as you want. In the end it all come down to money. I dont think we ever look down to women athlete at all even in football, its just there is not enough interest on it.

I’ve seen interest in women’s football in the US, but those women were wearing tiny booty shorts and tight shirts. The more sexualized, the more interest.

Genius and for you why that happens? Cause women have always been downplayed. They don't even talk much about women in football like they do with men. Talk about them more, advertize them more, in a proper way. Boost, emphatize their abilities. Women don't watch much women's football cause they don't even watch much men's football. It's about culture. It's about inclusivity. Teach them and everybody that football can be their sport too and we can all enjoy it, playing it or watching it. Hope my message arrived in a proper way. English is not my first language.

Without Scoring Girls, soccer would have still been illegal for girls and women in foreign countries. Tugba was so glad to establish the organization that permit girls to play soccer in Iraq although it is a Muslim country where girls are usually mandated to don some hair covering. Most female athletes in Mideastern countries wouldn't don sacred attire while playing a sport. GOAL FOR THE YAZIDIS!⚽

It's about equal treatment. When there will be equal (proper) treatment there will be equal pay. It's gonna take time, and everybody would benefit from it.

@@madmax5841 When we get equality. Duh!? You can't just swap out one problem for another. There's a lot that need solution. Why are men's problems more important than women's problems, so important that you bring it up in a documentary about women's empowerment through football? I swear, women can't have anything solved without a man kicking in the door and talking about his problems. This is exactly how it went down before, when women couldn't study or work certain jobs. Always men barging in with "what about me!?!?!? oh poor me!!!!!". When will you understand that we're all human and everyone deserves to be treated with respect and equality. It's not about men vs women. It's about EQUALITY.
