A wonderful song reminding us of some petty mistakes we did on the one we love.

My wife passed from breast cancer 15 years ago, and someone sent me a link to this song. I immediately learned the lyrics and sing it every year on her birthday, which is tomorrow. Such a beautiful song. Hard to imagine sometimes that this is the same guy that wrote American Pie!

Timeless! The guy is a MASTER of soul-digging!!! One of the most important artists, poets, songwriters of his generation! His art is timelss, boundless. His voice humble and sublime at the same time. I bet his melodies, if humanity will not destroy itself in the future, will continue to inspire generations of men all over the globe and beyond. Thank you Don. You have offered us a taste of a unique american pie (your music) that the whole world will be savouring for time on end!

Tomorrow is 26 months. You were my light and life, my joy and my greatest love. Our youngest is now 6. You should see him drive his power wheelchair. He's lost three front teeth but we've only found one. He's so proud of it, he keeps it in a jar by your picture. Your last breath was my last heartbeat. So many times and ways you tried to prepare me for your passing. I still find it hard to believe you're gone. I left some of your ashes in the Grand Canyon because you always wanted to see it. Less than a teaspoon but so full of your spirit. The tiny vial flashed in the sunlight as it gracefully arched across the sky and down to the canyon floor... I'll love you forever, my sweet... Your pain is over... Mine will endure until we meet again :'(

JD McLeod, I am a brazilian citizen and I wanted to congratulate you on your beautiful and tender love you have for your beloved wife. I do believe sometime in the future you´ll meet with her some place in this universe. May God comfort your heart and please keep in mind that to live in the heart of those who were left behind, is never to die. I wish you all the best ever.

Thanks JD, although you wrote this 4 years ago, I wanted to let you know that they were comforting and a great reflection of your love. I also find this song especially poignant and it brings me to reflect on those I have lost. It does seem that no matter how much you are told, it still surprises you when they leave.

Such a sad song; lost the love of my life.... my wife of 39 years, to someone else. It's just life and you have no alternative but to go on, but Christ, it's a struggle sometimes. Miss her, every morning when I wake up and the realisation hits me once again.

don mclean, my favorite artist, is more than just american pie. like this masterpiece, EMPTY CHAIRS. more than i’ve seen in music today, or even from the 70’s, he’s written genius pieces of art. INCREDIBLY UNDERAPPRRCIATED AND UNRECOGNIZED. if you want to get to know him more from music like the incredible song above, start with the album “American Pie” then maybe “Tapestry” and “Believers”. you can’t help but fall in love with him.

Beautiful song by an amazing singer and composer. This song inspired the poem "Killing Me Softly With His Blues" by Lori Lieberman, She saw Mclean live at The Trobadour and was so moved by him performing this song that she wrote a poem on a napkin. Later her poem would become another famous song "Killing Me Softly With His Song" performed by Roberta Flack. Thanks for uploading and ilustrating "Empty Chairs"
@Marco-ns7ih Жыл бұрын
Lori's poem became her version of "Killing Me Softly With His Song", which is the original version in 1972. Next year Roberta Flack covered it.

I feel a trembling tingle of a sleepless night Creep through my fingers and the moon is bright Beams of blue come flickering through my windowpane Like Gypsy moths that dance around a candle flame And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Moonlight used to bathe the contours of your face While chestnut hair fell all around the pillowcase And the fragrance of your flowers rest beneath my head A sympathy bouquet left with a love that's dead And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would Never thought the words you said were true Never thought you said just what you meant Never knew how much I needed you Never thought you'd leave, until you went Morning comes and morning goes with no regret The evening brings the memories I can't forget Empty rooms that echo as I climb the stairs And empty clothes that drape and fall on empty chairs And I wonder if you know That I never understood That although you said you'd go Until you did I never thought you would

Never thought my sweetie would leave... ...until she died before my eyes. She just kept getting sicker and the VA did little to help her. It's been over a year and a half and this song still brings me to tears. I look at our last child and realise he'll soon forget his Mommy. You were always proud of him, sweetie. The way no obstacle could stop him regardless of the deformities in his lags, arms and hands. Arthrogryposis sucks. What sucks worse is not having you with us. We still need you. We still love you. Your pain is over. Mine has just begun...

If you are lucky, you recognise when you first hear a masterpiece. DonMcLean made me pay attention to his genius when all around musically was great, but not this. Now, 55 years later, I weep at the eternal beauty of the lyrics and the guitar, and how seemingly effortlessly he captures the emptiness of loss. If you enjoy beauty in all it’s forms, bathe in this.

You must been so closed to your mother... mine is still alive.. but she sick very sick.. just like she just waiting for her time to pick up by our creator, so painful to see her condition it never fail me to break my heart whenever I see her. The only comforting to know is that they will join our creator... some we too we will join them. Rest assured that I will include you on my prayer to find comfort and your mother as well
