Davey Allison's 1992 season was marked with adversity.
After starting the year with a Daytona 500 victory, Allison would fight through physical and emotional pain in his quest for a NASCAR championship.
For a look back at Allison's '92 season, here's Part 1 of "Empty Cup".

Davey Allison had a hell of a future ahead of him. It's a damn shame he was taken far too early. Kid was a hard charger for sure.

Damn, every time I spend a minute thinking about the impact of the loss of Davey Allison, and empathizing with everyone affected by losing the 92 cup championship. Breaks my heart thinking about the effort the team and Davey put in winning, and Davey doing it with serious injuries. Amazing, inspiring, and heartbreaking. Though ultimately comforting, because you know Davey Allison's character was that of a loving, giving, kind, and tough soul, and he is resting with the Lord you can bet on that!

What an amazing time to be in NASCAR. The early 90's was such a boom of talent and innovation. The intersection of knowhow, old school experience, and new fangled engineering.

On My 1st attempt for a 3rd career mode championship on Nascar'15, I went the similar situation as Davey Allison. Every 2 races was a win, every 3-4 races was a wreck. Had a similar wreck to Davey's at the final 4 race at Homestead and finished 4th in points.

1992 was the most entertaining season of NASCAR racing in my lifetime. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that all the changes to the points system in the last two decades have been in an effort to replicate the excitement of that Atlanta race in November 1992. Well, that and trying to get NASCAR's favorite son a championship. Obviously, they couldn't pull off either one.

Not to take anything away from Alan Kulwicki but holy shit Davey shoulda won that year, everything they went through that year, all those wrecks & broken bones & then losing his younger brother. Getting to Atlanta & not winning the Winston Cup after all of that was a true tragedy, the most tragic ending to a Cup season that I've ever seen...

If you ever question why NASCAR is dead just look at how down home and relatable the drivers were. These drivers raced for the love of racing. Not to get rich from this deal or that. Not for some funky points scheme to try and make it like other sports. But strictly for the love of it. If you put today's drivers in a field with all the greats of the past all in their prime today's drivers wouldn't even finish on the lead lap. Sure many of them have the talent but far to few have the heart and the drive as the previous generations.

July 12, 1992 I lost my idol and the world lost a free spirit. I remember all the crashes and broken bones, the black eyes, and the determination in his eyes during press interviews. Davey was a superhero to boys, a reason for men to keep doing mechanics themselves and a great family man. It's so sad to see him go, but I know he will live on in our memories and will never be forgotten. See you on the other side my friend.....R I P

I don't think there is a movie or rock star that shocked the people more than the loss of Davy and Alan in 1993. WOW, what a devestating year for NASCAR and all the fans. There was a time my sons and I knew all the drivers and their sponsors, but today I don't know anyone who would waste their time watching a NASCAR race. All the greats have passed on or retired. There will never be drivers like Davey, Alan, Dale, Dale Jr. Rusty. Bill, Mark, Richard, Kyle, and all the others who carried us through the 80s and 90s with such excitement and thrills. These guys were racing for the love of it. Not like these cry baby jokers who drive fast and turn left of today.

Then Ernie Irvan wrecked on the front stretch right in front of me. Allison got caught up and his championship hopes gone. He ,fred lorenzen ,Bill Elliott, Carl Edwards were My favorite drivers. We went to Talladega for a lROC event. He and Earnhardt put on a Show. Davey Won.

God bless ya Davey, Cliff as well. I remember Bobby saying - "Clifford spent his life playing and died working, Davey spent his life working and died playing". To think that a father had to bury one son is tough. That he had to bury two is more than devastating. I feel lucky I got to watch Davey, and while he never fulfilled his potential - mainly because he had more potential than almost anyone that's driven in Nascar. Most drivers would be happy to have a career like his, he was spectacular on his day and he did it with a smile on his face, regardless of the pain he was in. An inspiration to all of us. I'm sad that I never got to see what Cliff could become.

I always had this thought that the #28 was cursed or something from that year in 92 all way up until they stopped running it - Davey's wild season in 92, Then losing his life in The Helicopter and Ernie takes over then Ernie has his accident at Michigan while in contention to win a possible Cup Title in 94

1994 was a brutal year for motorsports on a global scale. NASCAR lost Neil Bonnet and Rodney Orr in the run-up to that year’s Daytona 500. Formula 1 lost Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola, with Rubens Barrichello almost meeting the same fate that same weekend. Karl Wendlinger had a big crash at Monaco, ending his F1 career, although he did find success in GT racing afterwards. Then, of course, there was Ernie Irvin’s big crash at Michigan. And between what befell those who drove that #28 car, be it Davey’s helicopter crash, Ernie’s crash at MIS, and Kenny Irwin Jr’s New Hampshire crash (even though he wasn’t driving the #28 at the time), it seems as though that car was cursed in some way.

The 90's was the last great decade of racing for NASCAR. They got away from their roots afterwards. The drivers were more talented back then because each track was unique. Now most of the tracks are cookie cutter mile and a half ovals. The 92 season was NASCAR'S best because of Davey Allison and Alan Kuwicki.
