I carry on with my mini roadtrip and end up in the Tongariro National Park. Its below Taupo in the middle of the north island of New Zealand. Such a beautiful spot... I was blown away. I stay at Whakpapa Holiday Park which is the ideal spot for all the hikes in the area.

Greetings. I stayed at Whakapapa for one night just over a year ago. It is indeed a beautiful spot, with very good facilities and friendly staff to go along with the awesome location. I particularly like that all of the caravan sites are individual, in amongst the trees/bush so that you are not looking straight at the caravan//campervan next to you. The night I was there was clear and the view of the stars was breathtaking.

Great views. When your fuel light comes on, you have about another 50 km of fuel left, if you are not towing. If you are towing, all bets are off. You should probably drop your trailer someplace and drive directly to someplace to fill up. In this case you probably had another 100 km of fuel left. When I lived in the city, I never filled up until the light came on. Now that I live in the country, and am sometimes 40 or 50 miles away from a service station, I have broken myself of that habit. Now I fill up as soon as possible when I get to half empty.

If your Ranger is like my Ranger, they set the fuel gauge so that it hits "E" when there is a quarter of a tank of fuel left. The rumour is that "they" do not want you using that last quarter tank as it is where all the "impurities" from the fuel settle and they are considered bad for the engine. I've always wanted to get my fuel tank cleaned out so I can see how much I have accumulated in 20 years to see if this gauge trick is necessary. You can check this theory by comparing how much fuel it takes to fill from "E" and look at what your fuel tank is supposed to hold (either in the manual or online).

Get a fuel can. Wavian Jerry cans are NATO grade UN approved good reliable steel rustproof lined Jerry cans (genuine ones are red inside and have Wavian stamped across the middle of the can), 20L capacity ones cost £29 here in the Uk for a price comparison (you can also get 10L ones for £22). In all honesty only buy Wavian or really good condition ex NATO cans, anything else will rust in no time and clog up your filters. Never use plastic as it will crack/split pressurise and leak or rot and let you down.

Travelling K have to have to make a plan one day to visit.... aaaah dont LoL..... not with diesel because if you run out you have to bleed the system... sometimes I have heard it entails more than just turning the motor over until it starts... have a fab day ☺️

Hi Karen... loving the videos and following your experiences. I have a question re the caravan front cover you have, can you share where this was purchased from (looks like its been made specifically for you/your van)? I have a Sterling Europa 470 too (slighter older model, 2 berth only) :)
@TravellingK

It's called Specialised Covers: www.specialisedcovers.com/ They usually focus on the newer caravans. I was lucky that they were willing to fit one to mine... I wonder how similar your front is as they now have a pattern ;)

Love your videos. Question regarding your Ranger. I noticed it is an Automatic. When i was in NZ I noticed some new cars aren't available as a manual. Are Rangers mainly auto there?
@TravellingK
@TravellingK 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently we are getting more Automatic cars as less people know how to use a manual?!?

Just wondering what your fuel consumption is per 100km on open roads with & without towing? This would be a major factor in deciding to to buy a caravan or a campervan. Of course a lot depends on how much stuff one packs and the vehicle weight but the average for campervans seems to range from 8-10L/100km which doesn't seem like a whole lot! Have you ever done a deep dive into this issue?
@TravellingK
@TravellingK 4 жыл бұрын
I generally think I go through double the amount while towing. It's the added weight I think! I haven't done a proper look into it....

3:58 Looking at that gauge, you've a couple of gallons in the tank - so likely good for 70 miles on a bad day ! I bet when you got to the fuel station, the gauge needle wasn't completely on the empty mark ! Thinking again about it, it's actually a third of a quarter of a tank - so now I say at least 2 gallons and more likely 3 ! Your panic is just making click-bait :)))) RTFM ! ? Doesn't your trip computer have a mileage remaining option ?
@TravellingK
@TravellingK 4 жыл бұрын
After watching the needle suddenly drop, it was interesting to see it not move that much when I just took my car. I filmed my worry and it became part of the story🤷‍♀️No grand click-bait plan at the time.
@millomweb
@millomweb 4 жыл бұрын
@@TravellingK Fuel gauges do that - for that very purpose ! That's why the marks on yours for quarter and 3 quarter full are closer to full and empty than the half-way mark. So the pointer moves faster between them then slows down again near empty. A pointer width is about 5 litres. So if there's a pointer width between the pointer and the empty mark, you've got about 15 litres in the tank.
