The sound of slamming train doors has to be one of the most evocative. For me as a boy growing up in the 60s it symbolised going on holiday, the seaside, the smells of soot and the chuff of steam. Pity they're going but I understand that they have to comply with access and safety regulations.

Very odd - there seemed to be almost nobody in first class - so why was there so much shouting and yelling? One of the reasons for travelling first class is to avoid passengers like these ones! There is a lot to be said for a "quiet car".

Will be sorry to see the HSTs go as use to travel on these a lot during my working life mainly on the East Coast mainline to Wakefield, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Always a great way to travel, especially when there used to be a dining car where you could have an excellent meal with wine 🍷 and sit in first class seats whilst only paying the standard rate fare. Joining the Leeds train at Peterborough (my nearest East Coast mainline station) you just had enough time to have a full English before you got into Wakefield. 😋😋 Especially with my employer picking up the tab or a nice three course meal travelling the very scenic part of the line between Edinburg and Newcastle. Great memories 😇😇😇

As a Swindon lad, I grew up with the Inter City 125s on the GWR. They were my first real experience of trains and I remember as a kid being thrilled by their noise and power. Every sound in this video reminds me of my many trips to London over the years, because these trains hold a lot of memories for me and many others. In Swindon, special respect and love rightly goes to the steam trains, which were built in their hundreds at the works there, but there’s just as much love for the 125s. The ‘age of the train’ arrived with them, a new, modern way of travel. Sleek, quick and powerful. Time has now caught up with them, but what an important contribution to our railway heritage they have had. All hail the 125!😊

Another interesting video! The ride seemed smooth and quiet - except for those dreadful passengers! I wondered why, as you could choose your seat, you didn’t move to where it was quieter. It’s a shame to scrap what seems to still be functioning. You say there are safety and accessibility issues and they must certainly be significant because the cost of developing and building something completely new is usually astronomical compared to refurbishing.

I Took an HST 1st class from London - Edinburgh a few years ago. It was a wonderful experience. I had a single seat, which was well padded and very comfortable, with a large fixed table and acres of legroom. It was very quiet and peaceful compared to standard class, which given it was a noon departure on the 2nd Saturday of August meant it was full to bursting. The trolley came round regularly which was great. It cost me £80.80, undiscounted advance single, which was exactly double the standard class price but it was absolutely worth it. I had done the exact same trip the previous 2 years in standard and was so glad I opted to pay for first class. Plenty of available luggage racks to store my suitcase and lots of available overhead space to stow my violin.

Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. The Leeds inside railway platforms and surrounding infostructure reminds me a bit of Southern Cross Station here in Melbourne Australia. just of interest, London, Sheffield, Wakefield and Leeds all had their own individual tram systems many years ago. The train carriages there remind me a bit of the old Sydney to Newcastle Flyer trains, which were withdrawn after the entire line was electrified.

Oh, the memories. On my first trip to the UK (1975) I rode up to Scotland in a train of class 2 carriages hauled by a Deltic. Returning in 1979, I had my first trip in the HST and really noticed the difference in noise level in the seats and in the acceleration. Over the years, I rode the HSTs on many trips all over the network. And, like many of the commentators here, I miss the old slam-door entrances. It was a long reach down to that outside handle (but also to the sloping interior pull bar). These train sets have had an amazing career and earned their reputation as among the best ever.

It is perhaps worthy of note that HSTs were around 25 years old when they were gradually displaced by the 'voyager era' trains. Naturally enthusiasts missed HSTs, but also passengers did for entirely practical reasons (comfortable, quiet, smooth). The HST had already become an icon. Fast forward 20 years and the 'voyager era' trains are now nearly the same age as the HSTs were at their inception. Somehow I cannot imagine these rattle boxes being missed nor gaining any form of 'icon' status.

After they dropped the East Coast sleepers from London to Scotland, I would take day trains to visit my parents on the East Coast of Scotland. As I live in New York, after an overnight flight into Heathrow, it was very pleasant to sink into a first class east coast HS125 and have a snooze on the way to Scotland. It was quiet, spacious and comfortable. There was generally a hushed atmosphere (not like the loud mouthed louts you seem to have had as fellow passengers!). First class was v expensive at rush hour, but mid day (or weekends) it was an affordable luxury and one I would look forward to. Coffee and tea and water were served gratis to first class - it all added to an above average journey.

Seeing that you were traveling on a Sunday with no catering, did you make any effort to get food at Sheffield? With this equipment being retired, will the new trains also be diesel powered? What typically happens to retired carriages and motive power? Will they simply be scrapped and melted down? On a sanitary note, perhaps next time after your inspection of the lavatory, use a paper towel to open the door,no telling what germs are on that handle!

Hahaha, I've had to help a few confused tourists to open these doors over the years 😅 I ate before I left to catch the train as I knew there wouldn't be any food. The Adelantes and Meridians are both Diesel but the Auroras will be bi-mode so that they can run on electric when under wires. Sadly, these HSTs will be scrapped.

I suppose the reversal at Sheffield explains why First Class started off at the rear of the train - it's usually nearest to the buffers at the London termini, which it was at the end of your journey. I love the satisfyingly solid 'clunk' of those doors.

With EMR, First Class isn't always at the London end. I guess they must have got fed up with turning their trains around when it got messed up 😂

"Nothing quite beats the sound of an idling HST, does it?" Oh, maybe the sound of an Amtrak "screamer" F40PH generating full-Head End Power. I never thought I'd miss the sound of a 40 series EMD 16-645 at full-throttle on an Amtrak train, but I do. Hopefully a couple of HST sets will make it into heritage excursion service.

Sounds like you enjoy great engine sounds, checkout `XPT at Wauchope' here on KZfaq (the longer of the two videos with that title). The XPT is based on the UK IC125 but with many modifications to the power cars (including lower geared traction motors to handle the larger gradients, design speed 160 km/h) and with stainless steel carriages based on a Budd design including sleeper accommodation. Engines are Paxman VP185 in the XPT video (originally Paxman `Valenta' but changed out in 2000 resulting in cleaner exhaust emissions & better fuel economy). XPT was manufactured by COMENG (since gone out of business), they came close to winning an export contract for XPT in Thailand but it unfortunately fell through. There are also 3 short videos `XPT by COMENG' here on YT if interested.

@@Martindyna My like of the sound of an EMD F40PH generating HEP has more to do with fond memories of my earlier days and years of working for Amtrak than of locomotive sounds in general.

Hey, at 1:04 a real Bobby, hat and everything. As a Canadian, I love the look but never seen one in person. This is a very nice train, sorry I won't get to ride it. Seats look great and seem comfy, Great shot of the locomotive which I really like by the way, and you're right, what a sound. I kind of like the red seats too. Another enjoyable trip, Dylan many thanks.

Thanks to you Dylan to you for this nice video! You have traveled well and I am enjoying with you. I hope that the 2021 vintage will be of the same barrel as that of 2020. Where do you plan to take us this year? We are also going to do a lot of trains from June to October / November. We also hope to enjoy like last year. We have already planned a little. As long as the 2021 vintage is as good as last year! It is a real pleasure to watch your videos and I too will share with you my many train experiences planned for this year. (some are not all fun). A big thank you to you! Good luck to you, Dylan!

I travelled 1st class in an LNER set from Edinburgh to London in December before the plague began. No doubt in my mind the mark III carriages are the quietest and smoothest on our railways. While the new ICE trains look fantastic, the ride and sound insulation - on the GWR sets I’ve used at least - are a disappointment. The seats even in first class are simply not comfortable and the lighting is unnecessarily harsh and bright. Let’s hope none of these issues will be features of the new EMR sets! Anyway, nice video. I always enjoy your stuff 🙂

I feel bad that I've just posted the 126th comment, and thus messing with the universe somehow. I love that at 20 mins you go back into first class and that family is still nattering away. Bloody hell, I'd be well annoyed with that! Are the HST's cool? Yes. Are they comfortable? No. I went on one of those whilst it was with LNER and the ride quality was appalling. I was bouncing on the seat like a trampoline, and the seatback tray table kept bouncing aswell, so much that I could not even rest my beer on it. Could I have had another seat? No, because it was completely full! So, I am kind of glad to see the back of them. Although at least they don't have cracks in their bogeys...... Also, you pass my local station at 22:00!

Hi Dylan, looks like spring has sprung over there in the UK and you are out and about with new offerings after sharing your 2020 European Summer experiences. I agree with your sentiments about the interior of these sets. The seats are really great and a reflection of the now-gone Virgin brand. It's a pity that so many robustly constructed and beautifully appointed Mark 3 carriages are going out with the trash. The bean counters and economists may be proved wrong on the wisdom (or lack of it) in disposing of this rolling stock for a newer (and maybe less comfortable) replacement that may not stand up to the whole of life cost projections. Hopefully the East Midland replacements from Hitachi don't have the cracking issues that seem to be appearing with the early iterations. I agree with your complaint about the lack of catering and agree that prepacked snacks should be available, especially on a long distance service like this. The cynic in me says: ' But you can't do that. That makes sense. In these times, you're not allowed to display common sense in anything'.Stay safe and looking forward to next week's offering.
