One of the most commonly asked questions I get from someone entering EMS, is should I go FD or stick to EMS?
This depends on a variety of factors, some may say too many cover here, let me know down below your thoughts on EMS VS FD and if I missed any or you agree/disagree on my thought process from an EMS perspective.
I have set up the camera and tried to nail every single topic on your next steps in this video, one thing I will say off the bat is the location that you live will have the greatest impact on where your career leads. Which in turn causes some EMS providers to move for the type of job they desire, more on this in the video!

I’m in south Florida and most of the first departments also have rescues in the station. So the fire fighters are usually also paramedics

@@StoicDoyen you need to be atleast 18 for emt. for medics and fire u dont need an age u just need to have an emt cert

Bro it’s all about FD cause you still do your ems skills for those of yous who stay on just the ambulance your whole career I salute you. You people are not even human I would like to get some sleep at night 😂. Put me on an als engine or truck and I’m set for 30 years.

Firefighters first is how it is here in Tampa if Tampa fire rescue or Hillsborough county fire rescue paramedics go to a structure fire they do entry they do firefighting usually.

I'm on two departments, The first one is a combination full time Lt's, with part time ff/emt's and ff/paramedics filling in to make a four person shift, 24/7. So a typical shift is two EMT's and Two Paramedics, we have 3 Ambulances. we have a emt/paramedic on the first out, and emt/paramedic on an engine, and are the second out ambulance if the first out is still out and not back in service. But if we get a structure fire we all go on the engine if we are all in the station, and call the neighboring department to respond to any ems calls. The city is growing the just like any department, getting personnel to grow with the city is slower than a snail. My other department i'm full time with, we run a engine company as a first responder unit, EMT's, and meet an ambulance on scene, these ambulances will have two paramedics, and we will ride with if a code and they need are help.

That's incredible, and so different to how we do it in Australia. Our FD and EMS are separate entities, and in a city of some 250,000 people we have 5 Fire crews on shift and about 15 to 30 paramedic crews depending on time of day. The neighbouring city has another 120 or so paramedic crews on shift at any given time who can assist with case loads.

I am at a fire department but in an ambulance company. On paper I am also a firefighter but in reality I only do EMS duties. I don’t have to answer fire calls and I only had to do a couple days of firefighter training ( open a hydrant, put on a SCBA) other than that nothing fire related. I don’t have to go to trainings or meetings for that, only EMS stuff.

@@commiekiller I have never been in the “corporate” sector before so I can’t say with certainty, but I hear fire pays a little better. I’m sure though it varies from company to company and state to state.

FDNY EMS are not firefighters and it's a separate wing within the department. Largest FD in the country. Great video btw.

Most Fire fighters in my city are Paramedics, not all of them mind you, but I do notice a vast majority of the fire fighters have ALS training of some kind. You'll find mostly basic units in my city EMS services, and you'll see a hand full, and if I had to guess, it's about a 1-5 ratio for straight Paramedic compared to "firemedics" Of course you'll see basics in the FD as well, but you need an EMT certification in Texas for the fire academy

In my area, BLS is generally volunteers, while the police department provides ALS coverage. The paramedics are usually civilian employees, but some officers are EMTs or paramedics.

They starting to have single medic roles in my city fire department in Tennessee. Normally we have firefighter/medic or emt-b, but some don’t wanna fight fire just EMS calls

Before I joined the railroad business as a conductor/engineer, I used to want to be and pursued becoming a firefighter at a department in my area named Laurel Rescue Squad. They require you to be certified and serve as an EMT on the ambulance first before later moving up to the trucks with extra training for firefighter.

Well my city has ems separate but and has fire ranks like captain lieutenant and so on and they have there own department and they also run search and rescue so its really wired because our fire department only does fire and there careened.

In my area Fire handles all city/county 911. Private ambulance handles IFTs and 911 outside of our main county (small rural towns). Its pretty unfortunate because I would love to do more 911 but I have no interest in becoming a firefighter.

I feel you on that. I wanna be a paramedic for the fire department but absolutely not interested in becoming a firefighter at all.

I have a whole lot that makes me a great 👍 paramedic and that is : I can really relate to the patient's that I will be working with out in the field. It's that I have been through a lot of the things that the patient's are going through. I have been through seizures, drowning, house fire,car accendent, asthma, panic attacks so I have seen all of these things that the patient's are going to be going through and also believing in myself with a positive and excellent since of compassion and caring to the patient.

Definitely a lot of people start in Ems and move over to FD. Being a firefighter is not for everyone for sure. Don’t do it because you think it’s essentially the same. Yes a large number of our calls are EMS but the low frequency high risk calls still happen so make sure you understand that you have those too. This is a great video explaining the options people have.
