Yes, I had 8 of these EMT turntables. I sold most of them except two. The one I use most is the one with the original SME type universal headshell and I connect it directly to external phono stages which gives me more options. These are exceptional turntables and rank them very high. I also own Thorens TD 124 and 125 long base with SME 3012 tonearms and few other broadcast turntables. EMT is at the top in many aspects especially ease of operation

After a years of unhappily moving through the 'must have' turntables, arms and carts. I eventually purchased the EMT 938/929/SFL and have never regretted the decision, or felt any desire to 'upgrade'. A remarkable turntable that never imposes itself on the music, only ever transcribing a startling amount of detail, resolution and coherence. The only other record player that has exceeded all expectations, like the 938, is my Lenco 75, and that is because, even before any modifications, its price to performance ratio is astonishing.

Nice to see a EMT938. I have one as well. Bought two of these long time ago, kept the one with a not so common metal dust cover and an original mounted SME III tonearm together with a shure pickup. It has been used for quite many years without any problems, this year I had to have it repaired, a capacitor had failed on the RIAA circuit. I have two record players I can switch between, the other has a MC pickup..

Congrats Guido for getting this amazing machine! 👍 I own an EMT-950 which I acquired from my ex employer (Swiss Broadcasting Corporation), and I use 3 different cartridges with it: TSD15, TMD25 (for microgroove mono) and TND65 (for shellac 78). I also own a Technics SL1210-MK2 which I bought new and I use it with Ortofon blue cartridge. The sound of the EMT is not 2 notches above the Technics, but at least 4 notches higher 😁 The precision, dynamics and amazing sound stage is much better than the Technics, and there is simply no mono playback that even comes close to the EMT with the TMD25! I highly recommend it if you play older Microgroove mono records, the sound is absolutely fantastic! So well done and thanks for bringing the attention of your subscribers to these amazing machines!

Very interesting Guido. As an idler drive lover I have lusted after the EMT 927 and 930. I didn't even know about the direct drive units. I have a lot of mono and stereo LP's and modded Lenco 75 and 88's to accommodate the respective cartridges. Your videos about the Technics 1200G inspired me to consolidate the two decks into one, with a detachable headshell. Now you've thrown a beautifully engineered German spanner into the works. I have so many questions but I imagine the answers will be found in future videos.

Congrats! For the dust cover, search out KZfaq for dust cover repairs. Removing scratches, scuffs and dullness will take many hrs. Perhaps while listening to music? In the USA "SPARTA" comes to mind as a broadcasting turntable. A magnifing glass in the headshell front is an excellent feature. Even better would've been a led light.

The EMT you have must be the most shelf & room-friendly EMT of all EMTs, with a good W.A.F. for those wimps who haven't got a pair! That EMT tonearm looks exactly like one of Thorens late 70's or early 80's ('ish) t.o.t.r. tonearms, very much so. I've bid on 2 EMTs about 20 years back but got nowhere near the winning bid for a guaranteed working near'ish mint e/bay t/table auction. I favoured their Direct Drive neat & smaller models like yours.

Dude, you can easily make the dust cover look almost brand new by using Brasso and a rag from an old t-shirt. It takes a bit of patience, and elbow grease, but it works every time. I have fixed up dozens of turntables like that before passing them on. Trust me, you don't have to look through that foggy lid, and you don't have to sacrifice a fortune on a new one. Speaking of floating suspension; You really should get your hands on a 70's Philips like the Ga 212/312 or perhaps GA208/308 etc. I promise you that you will be impressed. Infact to an extend to make a video about them like you did on the Dual 1019. If you like floating suspension you won't find it better on any other brand of turntable. Those old Philips turntables are reliable as hell, takes a minimum of maintenance, they sound fantastic, they look great, there are plenty of them out there, and you can get them for almost nothing.
@anadialog
@anadialog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Philips tip. For the cover I tried several magic pastes and gel with a pro polishing machine, got better but still foggy...:-(
@TheSoundrookie

@@anadialog It's best to do it by hand because using machines can result in friction heat that burns the acrylic. I understand the temptation to use machines, because doing it by hand is time consuming, but it is risky business. I have tried several pastes made for the purpose, but none of them gives the results I get with Brasso. As mentioned I have fixed quite a few dust covers, and many of them looked like they were beyond salvation, but ended up looking like brand new. That's why I recommend Brasso, and doing it by hand. A cool turntable like the one you got there deserves to look it's best. Nothing beats the feeling of perfect looking kick ass turntable. I have my fingers crossed that you will experience that feeling with this one. Stay awesome mate. Kind regards from Denmark.

Great video. Q: Why doesn't the dust cover close? There seems to be a gap. Also, how would you rate this to a newer high end table, i.e, VPI Prime Signature, McIntosh MT5, Kronos Pro, Acoustic Signature Ascona MKII, and my favorite: Proscenium Black Diamond V (by Walker Audio) local here where I live. I could never afford a deck or table like these but always wanted a McIntosh. I own a Dual 701 direct drive and a Dual CS 5000 belt drive.

The dustcover rests on two plastic rubber knobs. I must admit that I have never tested those. I have seen a few in action at shows but IMO that doesn't count. In terms of direct drive, hardly you can find better, perhaps the TOTL from Technics...

That first shot, drinking from the cup... looks like a creeper from a horror movie! 😅 But you're right, direct drive is the best! 👍 To get rid of the swirl marks on the dustcover, you should try a set of Novus polishing pastes for dustcovers. That mechanical brake is impressive, much quicker than the electronic brake on the 1200G! 18:00 those things on the side are called mounting brackets; common with pro audio/studio equipment. Just purchased a Technics SL-1200GR that I’ll be setting up today. I was excited about it, now I feel like it’s junk... Heck I was happy with my $300 SL-D1.... I love learning about this stuff, and all the high end components are truly works of art. As much as I can appreciate fine gear, I’m gonna stick with my junk GR. I’ve been married 32 years and I’d like to see 33. If I tell her I just spent $1700 on a junk turntable, she’ll bury me with it in the backyard. Think I’ll just spend my money on records because no matter what turntable/cart you have there’s always a better one and it never ends.. plus if I had anything more revealing it would just prove most of my records are junk.... and they probably are. Congrats on this depressing video for Technics fans LOL! I sincerely hope you find happiness with this one! I love this channel and have learned much from it. Guido, I think you should consider the brasso and doing it buy hand, because I too have had excellent results with that combo. My SL-220 lid was nearly destroyed and looks like new. Fab video Guido! If money would no object, would prefer the EMT idlers 927/930 or the direct drive ones? And have you tried yet to bypass EMT phonostage and connect to the phono stage of your Shindo Masseto? (I thought that would be an interesting comparison)… I own a Voyd Reference/ Helius Omega/Audio Note IoII cartridge and a Pink Triangle Anniversary/SME V/ Koetsu black, but would seriously consider to replace everything with an EMT…though need to understand whether this would be an upgrade, and what model and configuration would suit me best (eg EMT stock phono preamp vs my Audio Note phonostage, or your Shindo phonostage).. love the EMT’s features though, and have just heard an EMT 950 (first EMT I’ve ever seen myself). Thanks for your great video!

Thanks for the recommendation. With time passing listening to the music prevails leaving less and less time to experiment. Still I don't know why the fuse is mentioned while power cord is not. And power cord makes for more than 99% of electric path supplying the power to the turntable. Have a nice day.

All turntables are "measurment devices" in a way, like an earlier siezmograph measuring tectonic plate vibrations, very similar but t/t's measure the groove's inner shape by how it vibrates & turns the sylus/ cantilever's vibrational modes into electically amplified vibration sourced sound. If that makes sense to anyone, or is it just me!

The proper available headshells as you displayed in your video for the EMT tonearms are very necessary to place a cartridge in correct alignment for the tonearm. Just one problem many cartridges do not physically fit within those headshells. The EMT headshells are very short so fitting a "normal" cartridge of your choice may be a challenge because there is no room, also you cannot substitute the more common headshells like on your former Technics turntable, your cartridge alignment for that arm with be off by a mile, also the pin layout is in a diamond pattern as opposed to the more traditional square pattern. Enjoy your legend. You need to listen to the Godfather of broadcast turntables the big EMT 927.

Can you use record weights and outer stablization rings to flatten a wavy record on a turntable with floating chassis? If not, this can be a disadvange of this system, but I don’t know, it may be okay to use them on a suspended chassis, as well, that is just what comes to my mind.

The black dots that say 33, 45, 78, what do they do? How might one use them?
@Jensmusiclover
@Jensmusiclover 2 жыл бұрын
That's easy to explain: - get to the beginning of the song, stop the platter right after beginning - then take your finger i.e. to the dot "33" (for LPs) - move back the record exactly to the beginning of the song - run a test after you have reached the exact place for playing the record - you'll be surprised of the result! It needs just a little practice. - Good luck!

This is a true broadcast turntable, but not what I would call an audiophile turntable. They are durable and reliable, but not necessarily the best quality sound. Yes, this can be changed with different cartridges and rewiring and a host of other modifications, but doesn't come standard). Why no volume controls? When plugged into the "board" at a radio station, you control the volume (and some other functions) in a different location. All I can say is having seen what happens to these over the years and the millions of records which have been played on them, you will be doing a lot of maintenance on it over the years. But, if that is what you want, good for you. Good luck and I hope it doesn't wear you out. Note: Yes, I have seen broadcast turntables used and abused. We had a RCA transcription and a Gates (don't know the model) at the radio station my father owned.

Greetings Thanks for the videos. They are entertaining and informative. If you need a special part for your EMT dust cover may I suggest 3D printing it. Either w/ your own 3D printer or job shop it out. Maybe even the dust cover can be 3D printed. On another matter I am surprised you handle your gear w/ bare hands. I always put on white cotton gloves to handle my modest system. Who wants oils and sticking dust to accumulate on fine gear. I also do so to maybe help prevent static discharge . Improvements in turntables are important but they are limited. If you consider that idler turntables like Garrard, Thorens and Lenco as well as EMT are considered by many as the best you can get if properly serviced and tuned it immediately gives you the idea of this world...
@TucsonAnalogWorkshop

I think the best any modern turntable can hope for is to equal the sound quality best of the mid century turntables. Since the 1980s, a multitude of analog knowledge has been wantonly discarded in a quasi religious fervor over digital's supposed superiority. The only thing truly new about the modern manufacturers (like VPI) is their visual aesthetics and marketing. The top manufacturers of vinyl's heyday (EMT, Garrard, Thorens, Sony, Micro, and many others) had, by necessity, a scale of innovation and engineering redundancy that would be impossible to match in today's cottage industries. Though I still believe if the new turntables appeal to you visually and you can afford them, they will sound great and we should support them

@@TucsonAnalogWorkshop I disagree the newer upmarket manufacturers Analise things like vibration friction and isolation in much greater detail and important than for example the 60 and 70's designs in tone arms and turntables and use more modern materials.I agree the Japanese made some good attempts before CDs killed the lot off
