When you think ninja, you probably don't think six foot tall bird. Well, if you knew about some of the peculiar habits of the emu, you might end up thinking differently.

I grew up next to a family who owned emus. The area we lived in was mostly wooded with houses scattered in the trees. The thing with emus is they make a weird base like drumming noise. And they have red eyes. So going outside in a wooded area with emus around, you will hear faint tribal sounding drums in the dark.... then you see the red eyes peering through the trees.... then the hissing starts as the emus get nervous cause they see you...... nightmare fuel.

Casualties and losses for the Emus: somewhere between 150 and 3000 emus. Casualties and losses for the Australians: 12,500 rounds of ammo. After it was decided that the Emu war wasn't particularly effective, and was a cause of mockery, the government privatized the slaughter with a bounty leading to the death of 57,000 emus in 6 months in 1934.

Colberty no, they’re generally homing animals that can’t be re-wilded (due to injuries when young, or rescued illegal ex-pets etc), often with a “rehab and release” program running concurrently, for those animals that can be returned to their natural habitat. It’s obviously not ideal, but it’s better than them being dead.

Ah yes, the Great Emu War. We lost so many young soldiers in it. Sometimes, when I close my eyes, I can still hear their screams. They're haunting me in my sleep. At least it's better then the silence that set in after the battle. See, it's not the screams that are the worst. It's the silence afterwards because there is no one left to scream. It's knowing that death will soon come to you too, in the form of an emu soldier pecking your eyes out. It's even worse when it doesn't come. To live as the only witness of the massacre of that day. To keep seeing the emus in every stranger. To see your dead comrades' faces in the darkness. To know that you will never meet them again... and to know that the emu responsible for this is still running around somewhere, pecking people's backs.

Its funny to say that the emus won a war they didnt know they were a part of. But it wasnt that they won, it was that the people assigned to culling the emu population didnt know how to deal with them. Emus have tough skin and so can take multiple shots from machine guns. After the war, there were bounties placed on the birds for people to collect and that worked VERY well.

you mean second _lowest_ fire rating is 'high': "low-moderate, high, very high, severe, extreme, catastrophic" personally, I've never seen one of those signs on a rating lower than high, even when there's a cyclone passing overhead (because if there's enough rain to lower the fire threat, there's the risk of lightning starting fires) the UV index is more annoying though: "1-2: low, 3-5: moderate, 6-7: high, 8-10: very high, 11+: extreme" what's the point of that warning system when the average winter index is "very high" and the average summer index is extreme? Once I was at a local national park full of emus. There was a group of American tourists cooking a BBQ and I was watching 2 emus sneak up behind them, one of the Americans was holding a sausage sandwich. An emu pecked her in the back, she turned around, screamed, threw the sandwich at it, yelling 'take it!' The emus both stole food then ran. It was the funniest thing ever, the woman was crying so loudly and the emus got a sausage sizzle. But yes, I've had 3 emu experiences and they come right up to you to peck you and run. They're so funny.

I get that people like to talk about the Emu War as a joke, but please explain the joke at the end because many people don't know the details and won't bother to look them up. It should be noted that the Australian "Army" consisted of only three soldiers - one Major, a Sergeant and a Gunner (no idea what his actual rank was). They were helped by local farmers, many of whom were ex-soldiers (from WW I), but the reports of the "war" generally only consider the kills of the three soldiers assigned to the task. I can't find any mention of any Generals being directly involved, although the soldiers were operating under the orders of the Australian Minister for Defence, Sir George Pearce. While the outcome can be considered a failure (twice), for those keeping score it's worth mentioning that the three Australians were facing off against a reported 20,000 emus, and they are reported to have killed a total of more than 1,000 emus while not suffering a single casualty themselves. Even though this attempt was largely ineffective due to the small number of men involved and their lack of hunting skills, a bounty system put in place in 1934 apparently resulted in over 57,000 Emu deaths in just 6 months. As a side note, these men were issued with two Vickers machine guns. This weapon had a reputation for great reliability. Ian V. Hogg, in Weapons & War Machines, describes an action that took place in August 1916, during which the British 100th Company of the Machine Gun Corps fired their ten Vickers guns continuously for twelve hours. Using 100 barrels, they fired a million rounds without a failure. "It was this absolute foolproof reliability which endeared the Vickers to every British soldier who ever fired one". And yet, on 4 November, 1932, these three soldiers only managed to kill 12 emus before they jammed their gun (singular). Whether it was because of operator fault or poor weapon condition (or maybe both), a gun that could fire 100,000 rounds without failure managed to fail at least once before firing 2,500 rounds (the total number of rounds fired during the six days of the first "campaign").

i'd love to share my emu story with the comments of this videos, sorry if this is too long. i am australian and have lived here all my life. we have open animal parks where the animals and visitors can enjoy nature in a way, theres benches and seats and food stands but no barriers or fences keeping the animals away. this is fine, to my knowledge nothing bad has ever happened. so basically you have kangaroos, wombats and of course emus coming up to you whilst you eat, a key aspect being that you are not supposed to feed the animals cause they wont leave you alone, thinking you will give them more, its hilarious when americans do it. one thing that will sometimes happen is if you buy chips/french fries (whatever you call them), and you are holding them and sitting down, the emus will come up behind you, lean over your shoulder and snatch some, its so awesome it happened to me once as a kid. unfortunately you cant eat the chips anymore cause its been infected by emu saliva, but it was cool none the less. thanks for making it this far if you read the whole thing

G'day, an Aussie here. Just wanted to stay one of the funniest things I've done was hide behind a clump of grass and wave my hat on a stick to make an emu (not e-moo) come over and when it's about 1 meter away jump up scream and run at it. Them psycho bush on legs don't know what to do haha. Their head goes one way, legs go another and body takes off in a third direction.
