I’m with you, Jack! En Vogue is my favorite girl group of any genre. Growing up, I have always liked their music. But, I didn’t fully appreciate their greatness until later in life. One of the interesting things about this song is that despite fans wanting them to release it as a single, there was at least one prominent music critic at the time who claimed this song along with another unreleased standout on the album “Just can’t stay away” (an amazing remake of a Natalie Cole song) were duds. That might have factored in the record company’s decision not to release them as singles. The song still got radio airplay in some markets. A very popular music video show on BET called “Video Soul” asked them to perform it live. The video of the performance made it to Video Soul’s top 20 countdown without it being a single. A glimpse of what could’ve been had it been released. The Video Soul performance is on KZfaq for anyone interested in seeing it. Their songs “Love don’t love,” “Strange” and “Yesterday (ridiculously good Beatles remake) had chart showing without an accompanying video. A feat that’s very rare in the music video generation. While music can be interpreted differently by different people. I’ve always believed this song to be about a oneness with our spiritual and physical self as well as our spiritual connection to one another. As a child my family lived on a military base. A family member owned this CD. We would go to the laundry room at night on the base to listen this while we escape the volatile family situation we were both in. She would frequently attempt suicide when we were alone-in what seemed at the time like a demented effort to torture me. Nonetheless, I did not abandon her. I was a child with an old soul. I not only recognized my own strength but also her struggles and vulnerability. Despite the repetitiveness of these actions, I did whatever I needed to do to save her. Without hesitation. Just a couple years later while on a church outing to a local river. I found myself being swept downstream while wearing a life preserver. As a strong swimmer, she attempted to save me while not wearing one. She succumbed to the river’s strong currents. It devastated my entire world. At the time, the lyrics of this song helped me with perspective as I grieved. The irony of these circumstances was not lost on me. I hope that however this song is interpreted, it helps people to understand their own power. And that no matter what you go through in life, there are people out there whose experiences and life lessons are just like yours. You are never alone in this world. No matter how much it sometimes feel that way. Much love to you, Jack. Always thinking of you and hoping your journey through this life is full of love and happiness.❤️❤️
