I think what people misunderstand most about Abuela is that everything she did everything that she did because she believed it was what's best for her family and her community. Was it actually what was best? Hell no. But she didn't do what she did out of maliciousness or cruelty. It was a twisted love laced with the trauma of civil war and displacement. She did what she did not simply because she needed everything to be "perfect", it was because she needed to keep the magic alive. Let's put things into perspective here: when she had just given birth to three whole humans, she was forced to run into the mountains to hide from the guerilla forces. Then, when they found her and the community running with her, she was forced to watch her husband sacrifice himself to protect them. The guerillas chasing them had machetes. Machetes aren't sharp enough for clean blows that instantly kill. The love of her life was most likely beaten several times IN FRONT OF HER before he died. Then, just before the guerillas can turn their attention onto her and everyone else, the candle activates and blows them away and builds the encanto. This includes the surrounding mountains and hills. The candle protected Abuela and everyone else from war. The candle provided a safe refuge, a home, a place where a life of fleeing for your life and watching your loved ones die could not touch them. The magic isn't simply some cool magical power that placed the Madrigals above everyone else. The magic is also a shield, one that Abuela cannot afford to lose. This is why Abuela pressures her family so much. It isn't because she wants to be perfect, it is because she wants them to be safe. It is because if the magic disappears, will the mountains disappear too? Will the guerillas come once more? What will happen when they have nothing to protect themselves again, when Abuela will watch her children and her grandchildren have to live that night? When she will have to relive it? No, what Abuela did wasn't good. It wasn't right. And no, it doesn't excuse putting that trauma onto her children and grandchildren. Nobody is trying to excuse it, only explain it. Abuela deeply cares about her family and did what she believed was best. And when she realized it did more harm than good, she reflected and apologized and admitted her wrongdoings. She grew and chose to become a better person because she loves her family. (But I do think the ending was rushed and everyone should've totally apologized to Bruno a thousand times over, but I blame the writing and not Abuela herself. I also believe there should've been at least five more minutes that showed her apologizing to everyone but I suppose that was already implied when they were building the new Casita which most likely took months, so she would've had plenty of time to do her Apology Tour.) Abuela is a wonderful character who I think is probably one of the most well-written characters in Disney. Her story is one that countless of POC families and relate to, and I hope many elders follow in her footsteps.
@StonedHunter
@StonedHunter 2 жыл бұрын
You worded this so beautifully. Everything you said is exactly right. My grandmother went through a horribly traumatic childhood and she has behaved a lot like Abuela Alma during my childhood to the point my mother limited her access to me and my older sibling because of her constant pressure and harsh ways of trying to get us to behave was hurting us deeply. I'm still horribly scarred by what she did even though I've come to forgive her and our relationship has improved in every way once she was able to realize that what she thought was tough love, was actually just abuse. (And my granny was a LOT more harsh and out right mean at times than Abuela ever was. I mean she'd use horribly graphic imagery to try and scare me into remembering things) Trauma is deep, it taints every single part of you, even the best parts. And if it isn't properly addressed, it spreads to all those around you, and especially those you love the most. It can break the strongest bonds when someone decides that they cannot be around you anymore because of how you are acting out your trauma (which they have every right to, no one owes you forgiveness or help on your personal journey especially when you've hurt them) towards them and/or others. It's only when you can accept that the trauma is there, and work to soothe it (as you'll never get rid of it completely) and be able to live with it that you can move on to heal and grow past it. That was what Abuela couldn't learn on her own, because no one until Mirabel had been able to challenge her worldview, and because she never told anyone what she was experiencing so no one knew how badly she was hurting.

What people dont get about Abuela is that she ACTUALLY THOUGHT that what she was doing was the best for everyone, not only the family, but EVERYONE Her past wasnt made to excuse her actions, making us think that what she did wasnt wrong. Abuela reminds me of my mom half the time. Like, she's not a bad person but she sometimes forgets that her actions are hurting her own child. I'm glad that she finally saw the error of her ways and apologized to Mirabel (and Bruno, if that hug and kiss weren't a clear indicator enough that she's sorry). If the movie was a bit longer, I can imagine her apologizing to everyone in the Madrigal family for hurting them too. All in all, I think she's a great character that shows a side that most people often missed because they're too busy dealing with their own traumas. It's not easy for someone as old as she is to acknowledge her wrongs and right them. Not easy, but not impossible.
@NashiEmilie

Everyone already love abuela, that's why they are how they are, so I do think it's already forgiven, it probably always has been, even if not healed. Her children probably know "how hard it was for her" and kids/grandchildren assume grandparents had a lot to live and so it was probably complicated (at least where I'm from/my familly) Now the one who had to see that is abuela herself, and realize how her actions affect everyone (which I assume was it) The scene I needed could have been in continuation with what happened in the movie, but yeah, they did cut it short

Everyone who said that Abuela was forgiven too easily just- didn't relate to this film. At all. Like I get it, you know? How you may feel about her mistreating her family, but the thing is, she was blinded by her own grief and desperation. I, as a filipino grand daughter of a tiny old lady who's had to run away from her toxic household to fend for herself, can totally sympathise with a character like Abuela Alma. Her trauma doesn't excuse her behavior, but it certainly puts things into perspective, doesn't it? On top of that, she's had to *unlearn* this trauma because she desired to reconnect with her family.

Well, she was doing it out of fear. She was ignoring the signs. She behaving in a pretty stereotypical narcissistic manner towards her family. She drove the wedge in between Isabela and Mirabel, she isolated and forced Bruno to run away from the family, she kept saying that everyone’s gift was “just as special as then” in front of Mirabel despite knowing that she got nothing. They used body language to show her invasiveness and over-controlling nature as well. She was an abuser; if this was typical to you, chances are you just weren’t made aware of the signs.

To be honest, it wasn't just Abuela that made the household toxic, her daughter was kinda guilty themselves. Even though abuela started it, her daughters, Peppa and Julieta, I think they never stood up for their brother Bruno when their mom treated him like a jinx, heck at some point they started treating Bruno like that too. When Julieta says "he lost his way in this family" or When Peppa blames him for her messy wedding, especially when they have this rule where they don't talk about Bruno, they paint him as the bad guy to their kids and the rest of the town. Don't get me wrong, Julieta and Peppa are great characters and good moms, but they had flaws have themselves, I get that standing up to their mom is difficult considering what she's been through when they lost their dad, I'm just saying the movie could've held them accountable as well for why Bruno left and mentioned they were kinda enablers till Julietta had enough of her mother's treatment towards Mirabel.
@Sparkletta
@Sparkletta 2 жыл бұрын
Idk man, like you yourself said, it’s sometimes scary standing up to your own mom, especially one as strict as Abuela. And it’s possible that after a while, that ‘Bruno = bad guy’ mind set would have started to sink in a little, causing them (especially Pepa) to become less tolerant towards their brother.

@@Sparkletta Tru, but still, they have their own minds, Julietta recognize mothers treatment towards Mirabel as something as harsh which she was right, but how come she didn't do the same things for her brother when it was pretty clear he was just trying to help, It would make more sense if they were like kids or adolescent if they have "bruno= bad guy" mindsets but now their adults and still can think for themselves without their mom telling them who and what is wrong. When they become adults they chose not to talk about their brothers and tell their kids he was some kind of mischievous bad guy, they may have their reason but they still treated Bruno like crap which is inexcusable.

@@chillco8764 "but now their adults and still can think for themselves without their mom telling them who and what is wrong." But even though they're adults now, their beliefs were built when they were children. Maybe they did know that Bruno didn't mean for bad things to happen, but people tend to just inadvertently avoid things that could go bad for them so if they were doing that they might not have even noticed. Maybe Abuela Alma made them stay away from Bruno, even if they wanted to spend time with him, because she didn't want anything bad to happen to them. Or (and this seems most likely in my opinion) Alma treated him similarly to how she treated Mirabel, maybe even harsher, and he internalized it and kept himself away from them. He became scared of ruining things for them and superstitious about his own bad luck (the throwing salt, knocking on wood) and stayed further away from them because he loved them. But people would still ask him for readings. And every time he saw something, it was something bad and all the adults blamed him for it. His sisters would definitely see him being blamed and at some point they had to think "Well maybe it is his fault" and they processed it differently. Julietta is naturally caring, so she takes it as him losing his way. She also seems to be pretty meek. And we know that Pepa is really emotional, but because Alma doesn't like it when she has clouds she tries really hard to keep her skies clear. So Bruno messing things up for her constantly would probably make her harbor lots of bitterness towards him, and make it easier for her to believe that he was just a bad guy.

Jesus that's long. Umm Tl;dr: Things you learn in childhood shape your beliefs in adulthood. It's likely that Bruno kept to himself to protect the rest of them from his bad luck and since no one challenged their beliefs, Pepa and Julietta didn't have a reason to change them.

I relate to this film way too much bro, my grandma is the same as Abuela, she has high expectations for us and wants us to have good grades and want the adults to find as high paying jobs as possible. But i know it's because she was living in poverty in her childhood and doesn't want any of the family members to be going through the same, but unknowingly she's also causing harm. I'm like Mirabel, the rest of my family actually reach my grandma's expectations but i can't, and i don't feel special and just want to contribute in the family as well.

I thought it was pretty clear that Abeula didn't mean to subject her family to abuse, but something about how she realized the error of her ways and was easily forgiven felt contrived. Like it was missing one more story beat that would have sold the character arc. Tbh the movie felt more like an hour long exposition movie for a series than a stand alone movie.

There's no denying that was she did was abuse because it was. Isabella went as far as to almost marry a guy she didn't love just to keep her family (but mostly Abuela) happy. She's not a malicious or cruel person, she's a misunderstood but also very flawed person who needed a reality check from an outsider looking in (ie Mirabel) who was heavily scapegoated and blamed for calling out the issues in the family, I feel like the ending was a bit rushed because Bruno was never given a proper apology for being shamed and considered a bad omen and lost 10 years of his life to protect his niece from being treated just like him.

I liked Alma Madrigal a lot. Idk why y'all treating her like she intentionally abused her family -- like, I don't think she went out of her way to make their lives miserable. She was blinded by her grief, and in the end she apologizes for it, and the family decide to collectively heal together. And TBH, unpopular opinion, but I feel like the people who don't like her, tend to be people who don't understand the weight of generational trauma. Her past does not excuse any of her actions, but people who talk shit like "uh she had a sad past we all had that"... like, are you people okay?

like seriously, SHE LOST THE LOVE OF HER LIFE, HER OWN HUSBAND. The worst of it all was she never got just bad news about it from someone else witnessing it but he was killed IN FRONT of her so she most likely has ptsd and most likely lives in that moment within dreams or in this case, a nightmare and probably stays up most nights to avoid that memory because it hurts.

THANK YOU every time I see some "gringo" throwing around the words "narcissist" and "abuser" so easy it makes me think that A) THEY DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE MOVIE or B) they are missing the whole context the level of TRAUMA of losing your husband when he sacrifice himself so others run away and becoming a widow and a very young single mother with triplets. When the miracle appeared and the candle began to work its magic, you see how the mountains closed giving rise to “un encanto” an enclosed place in which everyone was safe. Abuela, in the midst of her grief and mourning believed that the way to preserve the miracle was to make themselves worthy of it, subjecting her children to this ideal of perfection with a deep terror of what would happen if they lost it. Her face became hard and sad camouflaged in her strict being. In Mirabel (though not really fair) the grandmother sees all that she once feared The destruction of her home, the loss of the miracle, the insecurity and the pain. We can also notice that in Antonio's ceremony when he received his gift, the grandmother breathed a sigh of relief. In the end Mirabel is able to understand and empathize with all the pain of her abuela in "dos orugitas" and the abuela is able to unburden years of trauma and see her way had caused harm and apologize. Mirabel's Hug with her grandmother, was the rebuilding of their relationship yes, but it was also the acceptance that they were all motivated by their own emotions and are willing to work on the family.

@@mrsramos6546 Her having trauma doesnt give her the right to pass more trauma on to others, period. Everyone has their own shit and she was so caught up in her own she couldn’t see how badly she was effecting her family. She was very selfish and emotionally abusive to her family members, especially maribell. She was literally gaslighting maribell throughout the movie 💀. People pointing out that she shows abusive tendencies doesn’t mean they didn’t get the movie. If anything to me (and lots of other viewers) the movie was about breaking generational curses and the bonds of trauma that hold us back as a community. I don’t think anyones saying she evil and she did this all on purpose, just pointing out that she has made emotional wounds to her family. i don’t know why some people have a hard time admitting this. but if this was real life she wouldn’t have been forgiven so easily because emotional scars like that don’t go away with an apology. AND usually older people are usually so stuck on their ways they wouldn’t even apologize or admit to doing wrong but of course it’s just a movie so we did need that resolution at the end. but that’s just my take on it i’m not gonna be like “oh you didn’t get the movie” because you have a different take LOL.

@@ilikeskittles2185 I am talking about experience with respect to the videos I have seen. People saying for example that the abuela MADE Bruno leave home which is certainly not the case. They also attribute to her the phrase "we don't talk about Bruno" when it is Pepa who leads the song because she holds a grudge against him for "provoking" the hurricane. They also talk about Bruno being the scapegoat of the family, when he himself explains that the abuela went to him for important things such as Mirabel's ceremony and also believed him (she went for the umbrellas as soon as Bruno said it was going to rain) Bruno decided to leave the house because he could not get a concrete vision since the destiny was not yet written. Not only the generational trauma has relevance in the film, I'm afraid the context does too and unless people experienced the diverse family dynamics of my country, along with the events that inspired the film It is too simplistic to label her e ir lo suficientemente lejos para decir que no cambiará Mirabel herself, knowing this, understands and empathizes, feeling her abuela's pain. And her abuela finally understands that "el encanto" did not ask for perfection, but for unity and love.
