all instruction videos I've watched say you can't use acrylics with wax. Does the fixative allow you to do it?

Hi Fergie. I wasn't sure what was going to happen when I put the first layer of wax over the background, since I used a little acrylic with the stencil. But it didn't smear or anything! I used fixative only over the photo, not the background.

Yes, you shouldn't use gesso or acrylic under encaustic if you want long term adhesion and fixative wouldn't change that

P.A. Bragg, it would be better. Acrylics and encaustic waxes and colours don’t mix well. Eventually the encaustic will slide off or crackle. You used acrylic gesso for the board, so that any application of encaustic medium you used on top will not really fuse. Forget anything acrylic if you want your artwork to last. This also applies to the gesso used as primer. If you need to prime your board, then use encaustic gesso. Encaustic colours are expensive but you can use oil paints or oil sticks -they go a long way Pan pastels, charcoal, etc. are great. But encaustic wax over acrylic anything will not end well. The fixative does nothing to help I’m afraid.

Couldn’t this all be assembled using only encaustic medium? Why the need for any acrylics?

But encaustic wax over acrylic anything will not end well. And the permanent fixative does nothing to help I’m afraid. In collages you can use a little regular charcoal fixative if you wish -all regular fixatives are workable. But you don’t really need to.

I should have had the camera rolling when I first started using encaustics. I blew all the wax right off the substrate with my heat gun haha. LOTS of trial and error. I also watched many Nancy Crawford tutorials. Check her out on KZfaq! Thank you for your kind words.

I am a beginner and trying to sort out all the conflicting information regarding encaustic over acrylic paints. Does the fixative spray prevent any issues? I've also read that encaustic medium alone can serve as the adhesive, so you could avoid gluing the image down? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Glad you asked, Chris. I remember starting out and trying hard to find answers to my questions. I ended up learning a lot by trial and error, but I was on a budget and trying to minimize expenses. I tried both way of adhering...with Yes paste and with just using the encaustic. Unless what I was adhering was very thin (like tissue paper which almost just melts right into the encaustic medium) I use the Yes paste because when I adhere thicker things like a photograph or some lace, curls up and pulls apart. I lost a few pieces that way. I haven't tried any spray fixatives. Hope this helps!

@@PABragg i have a question. I have layered collage papers and vintage papers with walnut ink and some small amounts of acrylic paint and gesso on a wood canvas. It’s covered with gel medium. Can I safely cover it with something now so that I can use encaustic over it? Can I apply encaustic clear gesso or medium and not chance the integrity of the painting later?
