Happy 2016 skating fans! The second half of the season is underway, but we've recapped the end of last year (NHK/GPF/Russian Nationals/Japanese Nationals) for the ladies and ice dance disciplines. Let us know what your predictions are for Euros/Four Continents, and Worlds!

Great recap! Thank you so much for focusing on Ice Dance as much as the other disciplines, really apreciate it =) About Ladies: Evgenia deserves her victories this year but the PCS are way too high, esp. in SS and TR. I would like her to hold her landings a little more. Don't think I'll ever warm-up to Satoko tbh, her lack if elevation in the jumps bother me but good for her for skating the best she can and bringing it everytime! Elena's programs are...different I guess. I feel that it's a lot of unnecessary fake drama, but you've got to hand it to her, that girl fights to land every jump! On Ashley vs Gracie: agree with your analysis, Gracie has better jumps and spins than Ashley thus better scoring potential than Ashley. But Ashley is miles ahead in term of performance ability and interpetation, even when she falls she's commited to the performance. Gracie has a stoic face until she hits her last jump, that when she starts to relax a little. I recognize that Gracie is a better technical skater than Ashley But I desperately want Ashley on that World podium, I've been Team Ashley since the Mirai/Caroline/Ashley/Rachel times when she dared not be a "pretty princess"! Mao looks very tired, she's skipping 4CC, hope she can regroup at Worlds. Ice Dance: Kaitlyn & Andrew: their FD really grew on me, I like all the changes they made. Still think that their SD is the most unimaginative thing ever but the judges seem to like it! I watch skating on Eurosport France and Nathalie Pechalat mentionned how Kaitlyn & Andrew cover more ice than Madison and Evan and how their skating is effortless (she used to train with both teams). Their victory was well deserved! I'm still rooting for Gabriella & Guillaume, love both of their programs this year, their FD seems to last 1s, it's over in a blink, when it's done I want to see it again. May the team that skates the best win in Boston, no ridiculous +1 and +2 Goes for flawed twizzles please! We are not blind. Did not understand Madison & Evan's scores tbh, and unlike Kaitlyn & Andrew they changed all the parts I liked about the FD kept all the parts I didn't like! They don't have an organic chemistry so all the parts where they look at each other in the eyes feel very forced. I don't think that FD really shows their strenghts as a team. Their SD is very forgettable, I don't realy get it, I think that they want to be classic with a modern twist but it doesn't work well. Anna & Lucas are just themselves, nothing really stands out IMO, except that first lift in the FD. Maia and Alex have really improved their projection to the audience this year, kudos to them. I think that they should be USA's number 1 team or at least have a rivalry like Gracie/Ashley with Madison and Evan but unfortunatly it seems that the push is really to get Madison & Evan on top of the world podium. I like both of their programs, I'm not in awe with their FD like a lot of people (Fix You is not my favourite song and I much prefer their Gala last year) but they do skate with a certain "sincerity". Ekaterina & Dimitri: It's really good to have them back. I was expecting more from their programs because I usually love Zhulin's choreo but they are skating the best they can considering his injury. I was happy to see them reclaim their national title! Madison & Zach: I agree that they have one of the best SD of the year! It's breathtaking! I think that they are a team that's best apreciated live with their long lines and deep edges. While I think that their FD is an improvement over last year's, it has not moved me as much as their SD. They are always underscored in the SD unfortunatly, I hope that in that portion of the competition they are closer to Madison/Evan and Maia/Alex than Kaitlin/Jean-Luc. I think that like Kaitlyn & Andrew did in the 2010-2011 season they have to prove themselves internationally first before they get the nod and the support of national judges. Making the GPF is a huge step forward IMO and I hope that they'll be able to build on that.

+Libertango Thanks Libertango! Yeah, her PCS have gotten way to high, but that seems to be a trend now where your PCS will increase over the course of a season (even if your program doesn't really change, nor your skating ability, significantly) but you get credited with clean skates. On one hand, it's nice to see because normally juniors coming up to senior get held back on components scores until they've got a senior or two under their belts (we're seeing the same thing with Uno's PCS scores).

+Libertango And yeah, Satoko doesn't have big jumps, but she is doing the best she can with her small body. A more built, taller skater would be able to have stronger jumps, but kudos to her for managing to stick with it (and she's also getting less UR calls, although some tech specialists are a bit generous). Her programs and presentation are also lovely!

So which one of present "world champion threats" has programs, that give you goosebumps and has total package?

+papa Ashley and Mao's short and long programs excite me. Adelina's short has great moments and energy - too bad we won't see her any longer this season. In recent years, Carolina's material has been excellent so fingers crossed! And Kaetlyn Osmond is showing well, particularly her short. How about you?

+The Blade Boys Neither of these skaters is "world champion threat" this season realistically speaking. They can medal with some great effort, but I can't see them getting gold medal in any circumstances. Just as you guys said: there is always Satoko waiting in line for Russian girls to stumble. I think Medvedeva programs are fantastic, especially her LP where she's portraying deaf girl trying to embrace our "normal" world is spectacular: the whole idea is based on sign language, which she trained before the season under supervision of professional translator of people with hearing disorders. The girl is curious of surrounding world, world she can't hear, but also the world she's not afraid and is trying to explore. The beginning: ear covering gestures express her disability, but laso instantly the smile indicates the youthful zeal and openess, then the curtains she makes with her hands at the rink side are symbols of barriers between her world of silence and ours; she is bypassing them, pushing through to the touching end, when she "says" in sign language: "I can't hear you, but get goosebumps feeling you deep in my heart. I'm not afraid of you, I open up to you". The program was created by Ilya Averbukh for Julia Lipnitskaya year ago, but she rejected the idea, imho it's another masterpiece of this talented choreographer and just as in Schindler's List case, the skater fully delivered, if not exceeded expectations.

+papa Not to take anything away from Evgenia (or Julia) but both programs feel contrived to me.

+papa Realistically speaking, Medvedeva and Radionova will be very tough to beat. As far as giving goosebumps, there are skaters who can deliver great artistry (Wagner/Asada) and skaters who can deliver great technical content (Medvedeva/Radionova/Miyahara). Medvedeva's programs are quite good this year, not exactly chills-inducing, but she commits to her performances and delivers top-notch elements. She could ease up on the 'Tanos though -- yes, they increase GOE, but instead of becoming a highlight/variation, they end up becoming a bit excessive. At this point, if Medvedeva goes clean, she'll probably win -- which is totally valid (she'd be the first World champion with a 7-triple FS since Ando in 2007!). Not every World Champion has to have the artistry of a Kim or Kostner. Although that's interesting to know about Medvedeva's LP interpretation.

Thanks boys! I do agree with Ted about Satoko's use of the 2A 3T in the second half. I

+Michel Sennett No worries! Right now, the points system is with Satoko in that it doesn't deduct her anything for doing it twice. But I think a good judge would recognize that it's easier content than a 3-3.
