1936 දී ඉදිකරන ලද මහඔය හරහා පැරණි ද්විත්ව මංතීරු පාලම ලංකාවේ වැදගත් ස්ථානයකි.තවද පළාත් වෙන්වෙන ප්‍රධාන ස්ථානයක් ද වේ.ඒ හරහා මහඔය මුහුදට ගලා බසි.
මහඔය යනු පළාත් හතරක් සහ දිස්ත්‍රික්ක පහක් හරහා කිලෝමීටර් 128ක් ගලා යන ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ විශාල ගංගා අතර තවත් ගංගාවකි.එය අරණායක ප්‍රදේශයෙන් ආරම්භ වී මීගමුව කොච්චිකඩේ ප්‍රදේශයෙන් ඉන්දියන් සාගරයට එකතු වෙයි.
මිලියන 1.1 කට වැඩි ජනගහනයක් ගඟ ආශ්‍රිතව ජීවත් වන අතර,ඔවුන්ගේ යැපුම් සහ ජීවනෝපාය ක්‍රියාකාරකම් සඳහා ගඟෙන් ලැබෙන ප්‍රතිලාභ බොහෝය. ගංගා ආශ්‍රිතව ජීවත් වන විවිධ ප්‍රජාවන්ගේ ගෘහස්ත සහ කාර්මික අවශ්‍යතා සඳහා මහඔය ජලය සපයයි. ජාතික ජල සම්පාදන හා ජලාපවහන මණ්ඩලයේ (NWSDB) ජල පෝෂක ස්ථාන 14 ක් මහඔය දිගේ ඇති අතර,එහි අලංකාරය වැඩි කරන දිය ඇලි නිර්මාණ දෙකක් සෑදී තිබේ.ඉන් එකක් මාවනැල්ල බෝ ඇල්ල වන අතර අනෙක අසුපිනි ඇල්ල වේ.

The old double-lane bridge across the Maha Oya,built in 1936,is an important place in Sri Lanka.It is also a major point where the provinces are separated.Through it, the Maha Oya flows into the sea.
Maha Oya is another of the great rivers of Sri Lanka which flows for 128 kilometers through four provinces and five districts.It originates from Aranayaka area and joins the Indian Ocean at Kochchikade area of Negombo.More than 1.1 million people live along the river for their subsistence and livelihood activities.The benefits of the river are many.Maha Oya provides water for the domestic and industrial needs of various communities living along the river.The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has 14 catchment points along the Maha Oya, and two waterfalls have been created to enhance its beauty.One is Mawanella Bo Falls and the other is Asupini Falls.
