Great channel, btw the flex plate is not meant to rip things off, you HAVE to bend it and flex it to get the print off, or it will have the issues you are having!. Otherwise, great review. I think it's a great printer, I don't think the issue with the Prusa/Ender comparison. I think the main issue is the support, Prusa has the support that Ender will likely never have.

Since this is a beginner level printer and several of us out there are just starting out, may want to indicate that this printer may not be out-of-the box ready like many unbox videos would lead you to believe. Appreciate the video and attention to detail, I went back and checked my bed and sure enough it was loose like yours and had to (very slightly) tighten one of the nuts to make the bed sturdy. My print head assembly on the X axis was about to fall off the rail it was so loose, I believe yours was a bit too tight as you indicated the wheel had a flat spot. For those new to 3d printing, it's very important to not over tighten the centric nut on the X axis or any of the wheels, I thought the hot end assembly was loose on purpose, but this was really screwing with my bed leveling and causing all kinds of print issues that almost had me sending the printer back and giving up on 3d printing- Not fun! If you do have to tighten the hot end assembly, I recommend removing the assembly, disable the stepper in the menu, and barely-barely-barely tighten that centric nut on the back (the bottom has the nut, the upper 2 do not) using the included wrench so that it's firm but doesn't wiggle, then loosen it a bit and see if there is any play, if it's loose, then give it very subtle tension so you don't over tighten and create stress on the motors and wear your wheels. Make sure the belts aren't too tight, or too loose. This was the only video that pointed out making minor adjustments during the assembly, all the other videos were just taking the printer out of the box, speeding through the assembly and printing. You have to make sure this printer is in tune, otherwise you'll run into bed leveling issues like I did and can ruin the 3d printing experience. Thankfully, I have an experienced buddy who was there to help dialing the printer in. I think this printer deserves a proper bed leveling tutorial, explaining what auto-level is and how it works. Same with setting the Z offset. Express that if any adjustments need to be made, to be careful to not over tighten to prevent damage. Looking forward to the future videos! =)

When I do an unboxing and review I want people to get a sense of what it is actually like to buy and start using the the printer. I include all the minor issues i come across, and tips and tricks for getting the most out of your printer. I could whip this thing together in 10 minutes and just start showing off the features and print quality. But like you say, for a lot of people this will be their first printer, and nobody talks about the 20 extra checks and steps that aren't included in the assembly instructions. I'm glad my video helpful because that means I'm retaining the right stuff in my final edits! I usually take about 4-8 hrs of footage and condense it into 4-12 minutes for my KZfaq videos. I try to keep the pacing and information flow going at a good pace for the whole video. I have a couple more videos planned for the Ender 3 S1, so stay tuned! I've been quite busy installing upgrades and designing custom parts for this printer!

I've had mine for one week. I print at a 0.12 line thickness and you can barely see the lines, even under a magnifier. This is my first 3d printer and I'm spending all day, every day, learning all the parameters to adjust, and what effect they have on the print quality. I'm trying to get good at support enforcers and I find the snug support base option in Prusa to be great. You can add supports just where you need them, and selecting snug, the supports do not take up unneeded space on the bed. At first, I used the Creality supplied Cura slicer, but then I found the Prusa Slicer. I use the Prusa slicer now because it's ability to paint on supports, and the way you can analyze each layer is far better than Cura. So far, so good with this printer. I'll probably mod the fans and go with Noctua. I use them on my computers and love them. I am really looking forward to your mod videos on the S1. Great video, subbed!

@@emilcost8613 I like Prusaslicer a lot. All the important options are easy to look at and change, moving and editing models is snappy. In Cura everything's stuffed into a tiny menu in the corner of the screen. Not a big fan of that. But Cura has more advanced algorithms, so it's interesting to use both.

It's funny, I had a 2019 Ender 3 sitting around collecting dust (new, we had never finished setting it up due to... life). Last week I finally did, and while I have fought with understanding some 3D things (my brain just does not think this way at all), once I understood what I was trying to do with the bed, and got it dialed in it prints amazing. The set up was definitely way hard for me but I don't currently have any blobs, zits, weird layers, everything I have failed has 100% been *my fault* because I didn't know what I was doing (and I did a ton of learning in a compressed time to learn Cura, to learn how to adjust it, to learn about infill, supports). My Ender is definitely a little noisy, but otherwise I don't quite understand why people disfavor it. I'm currently running it with 70mm speed and I try to trim off as much time as I can from my prints, so far so good. Although I can see the Ender 3 has some weakness in terms of quality of components. Also I am amazed to see how far the market has come in about 2.5 years - I've only learned this because of my consuming pretty much all the KZfaq videos I could get ahold of on 3d printing to build my base knowledge, and whoa, it feels like a different playing field now. It just goes to show how very bleeding edge those who've been printing for 2+ years really were, and clearly anyone in it now is still leading edge. I'm in tech with people 1/2 my age, and only a handful of hundreds have printers. *My* kids are now going to be growing up with this in their home to tinker with (they are in middle school). Think about what 3D printers will be in another 4 years! So exciting. ETA: I know I am only printing with PLA and life might get a lot more exciting when I try PETG or ABS or something, but I am not in a rush, I am happy to amass some general knowledge first. I did do a torture test print (with the over hang and bridging and stringing) and I thought for sure it'd reveal issues, but the only real thing I can see is a few hairs on the stringing part and at 70 overhang it's not real pretty (decent through 60 tho). I didn't even know the names of any of the parts until quite recently. I do think that most consumers will not have the patience for the DIY experience but things across different manufactures are really pushing things forward.
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
PLA I'd a great material. Its stronger and stiffet than ABS and PETG, is more printable, requires lower temperatures, has minimal thermal expansion, doesn't really need to be dried, and produces less harmful emissions. Nothing wrong with sticking to PLA! I've been able to use some pretty nice printers for work. Filament based printing is super refined now and I don't expect too much more improvement, aside from more advanced slicer options, and faster extruders/hotends/motion systems - but most people don't need a faster printer. Who needs to be able to eat a spool of filament in 2 hrs? Only a print farm would need that kind of speed. On the industrial side things are getting very interesting. I've been lucky to see where 3D printers are going at the industrial level. Metal printers, large scale carbon reinforced plastic printers with built-in machining capabilities, so you can print half of a part, machine precise complex cavities inside of it, then print over the top and machine the outside to have tighter tolerances and better surface finish than normal printing can achieve.
@ashvanes484
@ashvanes484 2 жыл бұрын
@@NathanBuildsRobots oh for sure, I think the primary improvements aren't going to be around speed, but overall in reliability and ease of use. Most people do not want to fiddle and tweak to the extent the KZfaq 3d printing community does, they want a system they can get to on demand solve a problem, such as printing a small part. I think those kinds of things are already coming with auto bed leveling, stronger motors, easier assembly, filament sensors, small footprint options - basically a lot of what is in the S1 (minus the footprint). That is really exciting to hear about the industrial side. I do watch some videos about how 3d printers are printing entire houses now, which is amazing to me. Other applications too!
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashvanes484 I think ease of use and reliability is more useful than absolute speed. The S1 puts in the upgrades where it counts in that regard. Still wish they would have gone with PEI instead of this weird PC bed. But it will be useful to have around as another option.

So I've owned an S1 for over a month now. I've added a new heat block and all metal hotend and changed the bed to glass and It prints amazing!. Comparing pictures of prints from the prusa i've seen on groups im a member of i will say they look identical in quality. The only thing that needs to be addressed is the auto leveling. I personally don't think the creality auto leveling is perfect. This is probably the reason I put glass on the bed, I don't use the auto leveling function on the printer but i manually level it myself with help from third party firmware. I would say if you want a printer that prints amazing out the box and you don't have to do anything to it... buy the prusa if you want a printer that you can modify and change things then buy the S1 for half the price. I don't regret my purchase and I'm thinking of getting a second one soon!

Cool! I have someone in my Discord that says they use the bed leveling probe to tell them how much to turn each knob to level the build tray. They did it with a macro in Klipper. As you could see in the video, my bed was super warped, but I have done some full plate prints without issue, so the bed leveling must be doing its thing!

Oh, also I always overextrude the first layer, laying down an extra thick 0.6-0.8mm wide bead out of a 0.4mm nozzle, so it really squishes down into the bed. IDK if this would help you but that seems to work for me when I have bed adhesion issues.

It is quite a bit nicer than the Ender 3 Pro. Just a heads up, they are working on an Ender 3 S1 Pro that is coming out next month which will have the PEI sheet and all metal heatbreak for an extra $100. Those are some very nice upgrades IMO, but can be done on your own too. There is also a CR-10 Smart Pro (its the only CR-10 with the new sprite extruder on it). Its not on sale on amazon yet, but you can get it direct from creality. It's like this machine but bigger with a 300x300x400 build area.

What you are describing should not be happening - it might be a warranty issue. Whenever you start a print the printer has to get up to temperature first. You should see little icons indicating the temperature of the hotend and the heated bed. If those numbers aren't changing, your printer may not be heating up properly, so it won't start a print. It could be a loose wire. If you join my discord I will be able to respond a little faster and more reliably. discord.gg/Kb5rzRW9

"Prusa Killer" is sort of a stupid thing to call a printer that is aimed at a completely different market. A Prusa will print with high quality in minutes after opening the box and will repeat that quality for years with only minor maintenance. That is what you are paying for not a list of features.
@NathanBuildsRobots

Historically there has been a big gap between easy to use, high quality printers like PRUSAs, and cheap, dodgy hobby printers like the old Ender 3s. Personally, I'm glad to see some entries that fill the gap. For some people, this is as good as an I3MK3s, depending on what their needs are. Needs something that can run 200 hrs per year and is relatively easy to use? PRUSA and S1 have you covered, but S1 is cheaper and has less lead time. There are still a host of areas where the PRUSA is better, but in terms of ease of use, the S1 is pretty compelling.

All these Chinese printers are still using couplings for the lead screws after all these years. Prusa switched to integrated screws which everyone should be using. Also, I was hoping for a larger bed. 8.6" x 8.6" is a bit too small.
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
What are the advantages of integrated screws? I guess they would make the motor and shaft more concentric so it doesnt cause z-wobble, but dual axis lead screws and properly tightened wheels should resolve most of those issues. Should the Chinese printers also start using 3d printed parts and zip ties instead of metal, and raise their price to $1000? Not saying the E3S1 is perfect, but I think it provides a lot better value to consumers.
@adisharr
@adisharr 2 жыл бұрын
@@NathanBuildsRobots You answered it yourself. There's no Z wobble issues on an integrated screw assuming the screw itself good. A lot of the Chinese screws I've used are not unfortunately. You get what you pay for though. The cost is always attractive. It would be one thing if the screw was properly machined to accept a coupling but it's not. I'm a much bigger fan of a prox for bed detection rather than a touch probe but that only works on a metal bed. It does allow much faster auto bed leveling. As for 3d printed parts, I've never had any issues with any of them and they serve their purpose perfectly fine. As you pointed out, the Chinese machine still has an uneven bed even though it's all metal. This is not to say I won't pick up an Ender some day. The cost is attractive and they do seem like they're much better than the earlier models.
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
@@adisharr thank you for the explanation, I know the Prusas I used at work had virtually zero z wobble, but I did not know why. V-groove wheels, and eccentric couplings are the cheaper less precise solution. And you're giving up 0.05mm of precision and repeatability, which most people won't notice. But for those who care, and in applications where it matters, the Prusa does have an edge. Also I think the Ender 3 did cheap out by using PC spring steel bed instead of PEI, and should have used an all metal hotend, and could have done sensorless homing. All things the Prusa has to begin with. But this Ender has some tricks up it's sleeve as well. @NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
It uses a new mainboard with an STM32 chip with less memory and special connectors for all the ribbon cables. It has only 4 stepper drivers on the board, so the z axis steppers should be wired in series. I don't know the vrefs. I assume the X, Y, and Z vrefs are the same as previous ender 3s, since they are driving steppers of the same size Prior ender 3s use a large stepper for the extruder, on this one it is smaller than the normal motors for X and Y. So the Vref is probably lower than the normal XYZ steppers vrefs. I don't want to change it because it works great as-is. The extruder contains plastic gears, so I don't want to increase the motor torque too much and risk breaking them.

I think CHEP noted the hotend is PTFE lined and the board is lobotomized with 256k ROM -- i'm figuring that this machine seems to be a great candidate for a klipper as the main board ROM issue goes away, provided people figure out how to get stm32f103rc-256kb variant to work with klipper. PTFE lined hotend is replaceable I suppose. Weird choices on some hardware. Seems creality is only capable of going 90% there.
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
My hotend is PTFE lined no longer! I'm editing the video now. I think a lot of budget companies use PTFE lined because they are basically impossible to jam, unless there is a physical blockage blocking the nozzle. Idk what the ROM thing means, I'll check out CHEP's video. I'll for sure be putting a Pi on it. If Klipper isn't ready I'll at least use octoprint.

@@NathanBuildsRobots 256kb variant of this stm32 seems to be a new thing, might be related to a semiconductor shortage. All other stm32f103 based boards have 512kb rom, so firmware is easy to build and no issues with trying to figure out which features to disable to fit into the ROM like the old arduino based days. Klipper guys would need to get their hands on these boards before they can validate compilation parameters, in terms of where the booloader is mapped, etc. Just an annoying thing about creality not sorting out their supply chain stuff and going with an uncommon (as of now) variant of the MCU

There are 3 printers I recommend at different price ranges and needs: Voxelab Aquila $160 Best value per dollar. Its an Ender 3 V2 clone. Prints slow (max 4 mm^3/s) Normal print quality Ender 3 S1: $400 Lots of convenience features Prints medium speed (max 15 mm^3/s) Good print quality PRUSA: $800 Lots of convenience features High-end components Prints medium speed (max 15 mm^3/s) Very good print quality Then theres the printer I want: $900 VORON 2.4 is very hard to assemble Very fast print speed (20 mm^3/s) Very good print quality
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
I think this is a good substitute for a PRUSA. You are giving up a tiny bit of print quality, and saving a lot of money, which you can spend on upgrades later on if you feel you need them.

One thing Creality has consistently failed to address is the X Y offset of their ABL firmware on nearly every model, you dont get a correct mesh when probing the bed, I was hoping you would show the probing so I could see if they have fixed this issue but I dont have much confidence that it has, fixing the X Y offset is so important for this printer as the bed is as bent as a £15 note!
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
It is really bent. If it counts for anything, it's printing fabulously. I'm laying down 100 individual miniature pieces on a bed and I haven't had a single part come loose. I'll be doing a video where I straighten the bed, I'll show the full leveling sequence afterwards (sped up, but slow enough that you'll be able to see the meshing points.)
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
Just watched it probe the center of the bed for z limit prior to printing, it was dead center. Will still follow up with a video of mesh leveling.

@@NathanBuildsRobots I am really happy to see Creality finally fixing this issue, I hope they also fix their ABL firmware for other models which shouldn't be too hard, this would be great for new users who won't immediately know which 3rd party FW will fix the issue or that there is an issue to start with, I have two Ender 5 Plus machines and one of them would not print the first layer of large parts well enough to continue with the print until I flashed Insanity Automation FW to fix the X Y offset, it now prints like a champ!

Interesting. I film at 24hz with a 1/50th second shutter speed, which is pretty much the gold standard for filmmaking. However, my lights are crap. they flicker and produce subtle banding in the image. Didn't know anyone could see it. I may have to invest in some better lights!

V rollers are inferior to linear rods or rails. That flat spot on the wheel is a big deal over time for quality.

@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, linear rods are pretty sweet. I tried out the Voxelab Aries and was surprised by it's print quality. I didn't realize it at the time, but I think the reason it printed so well is that it uses linear rods like the Prusa.

Im pretty sure you are supposed to put the scale on a flat hard surface... right?
@NathanBuildsRobots
@NathanBuildsRobots 2 жыл бұрын
Flat is important, but it doesnt have to be a hard surface. Though a hard surface will do a better job of staying flat. The only thing that could change the reading is if things were moving around. You could put a scale on a pillow, and as long as everything is stationary and flat, it will produce the same reading as if it were on concrete.
