ENDLESS Heat for Your Home WITHOUT Electricity 3.0. I decided to make a version 3 of the oil burning heater besides the version 1 and version 2. This heater was built to test a new design so that he heater can be portable and brought in any room and vented out through a concrete board out the window. Also, it can be taken down quickly and removed to a new location. The version 1 and 2 are perfect because we used a heavy gauge ammo box which can withstand the heat. The downside on the version 3 is that I used a thin corrugated steel metal which got too hot too quickly, but it was a good test all in all. Just needs to be remade with a thicker gauge steel. When the heater is used for the first time and gets very hot, it will begin to burn off some of the paint from the top of the heater. The same way a wood burning stove does when used for the very first time. After the paint is burned off, it will no longer emit fumes from the paint itself. If the house is very airtight, one might need to crack a window open, just a little bit to provide oxygen for the heater, or the heater can have a secondary pipe that is bringing oxygen in from outside. The same way we did on the previous heater video: • ENDLESS Heat for Your ... . The oil tank we built can hold half a gallon of oil, and it takes us a week to go through a single gallon of oil. We are only using the heater for 4-6 hours a day, only when we are there using our shop. Now if you need to run the heater nonstop, you will probably go through more oil each week. To put out the fire, simply put your hand over the fresh air intake pipe and hold it until the fire dies off from lack of oxygen. We are using dry cotton baby wipes as a fuse. Once the entire tank of oil is empty, we simply install a new baby wipe and refill the tank again. When the oil tank is completely full and the heater has been working for 30 minutes, the heat released from the heater is enormous. One can feel the heat from a distance or just walking by it. It feels like a blast of heat. We estimate that the heat released it approximately as much as two small space heaters at full blast.

Galvanized ducting should not be used for high temperatures. The coating off gases nasty fumes and can make you sick. The aluminum downspout also will off gas.

V2.0 is a much better and durable design by the simple fact that you started with an old ammo can which was certainly a better starting point for a durable heater. You may want to invest in a welder at some point to, but all in all this is how you learn by doing even if you make mistakes, it's worthwhile project.

The ammo can idea is absolutely brilliant. I am worried about durability, and about what kind of fumes the paint would put off in operation though. When I make mine, I'm probably going to sandblast the previous coating off and go with high-temp paint, steel or copper vent pipe, and vent it through a sheet of cement board placed in the window rather than making a hole in the wall.

@@coalcreekdefense8106 you are starting off on the right track. Any metal that is intended to be used in a high heat environment should be Sandblasted. This will ensure that all potentaliy dangerous coatings are removed. After blasting, the container shpuld then be recoated with a high temp enamel. Something like coatimg that is designed for car motors or exhaust headers is made to wothstand up to 1500 degrees. Which should be more than enough for a small heater like the one shown. Also the heater should be welded together instead of using jb weld or anyother adhesive welding will imcrease the streghth of the heater and prevent any onforeseen complications that may arise from using jbweld. Besides, amazon has plug and play welders that are supet easy to use amd they can be found for less than a 100 dollars. They would work great for a project like this and as a bonus you will learn to weld which is a vital skill that every one should have a basic knowlege of.

It will smoke, no matter the guage. That is why one must always do the first burn outside to get the manufacturing coatings off or else use paint remover for painted surfaces. Once the galvanized steel coating is burned off (burned off) it is safe to visit with extra high heat stove bbq paint and use indoors. Immediately after the paint is set, a couple days to a week, start your regular fire in it and let it gas off any extra from the new paint. Then you have a beautiful n safe heater. Stainless steel is another thicker option and with use develops a beautiful bronze finish. Thanks for such a great invention!

There's a large military ammo box that would be great it's a little longer then the corrugated tube you used in this one its made to hold 2 rockets for a launcher I find them online alot and bought one to store tools in for my truck now thinking about making one of the heaters out of it did you build the oil resivore yourself or was it made from something else in this heater I'm planing to use a peace of steel box tube and weld end caps on it for the resivore any size slot work as long as the wick can fit in it or will I need to make it slightly warmer then the wick iv made oil candle from steel cans but couldn't get the oil to wick up to stay going so not sure if it was the hole to small I'm making it to use in my small camper and one for my room in the house for emergencies last winter we had lots of power issues due to trees falling on the lines so wanted to be ready for that this year

Maybe you know already about it, but the longer you make the exhaust inside the house (even with a lot of turns and elbows) the more indoor heat you keep inside the house. Which by the way it’s one of the great things about rocket stoves. The temperature at the outside exhaust of those rocket stoves could read as low as 100 degrees meaning that one is keeping hundreds of degrees of heat inside the residence. Besides that I really love what you are doing and I can’t wait to get my spinal discs operational again in order to make one of your creations. Keep up the good work!!!

You might consider a metal tool box from harbor frt. for the firebox 21 x 10 x 8.5 prox dim. , heavier ga. metal and carbon fiber felt for the wick.

Awesome heater! I wouldn't heat a can on it though, I'd use a pot because there's a coating of plastic lining all cans which melts into your food. Again, Awesome heater!

Go for large diameter Teracotta pipe. Then you can do that thin steel around it but leave an air gap for convection to take place

I think you might create some pressure pulling cold air into the cabin this way as well. You could have the intake come in from outside, and add more mass to and around the exhaust to act as a radiator for even more efficiency

May I offer the next version. You can get copper sheeting and have a HVAC ductwork builder fabricate the box. You can braze, solder, or put refractory cement, or JB weld or high temp silicone on all joints to seal on the inside. Copper will radiate heat through the room or house much better that other metals because it warms the walls and objects in the room not just the air. Kindly lower the unit so it heats the lower half of the room better. Also structurally reinforce the top so you can cook or heat water for soup or tea. Nice build, very soothing flame. Very elegant design.

You still need to pull in cold air from outside. It will increase the efficiency significantly. Negative air pressure will pull cold air from outside into the room.

Lol😂 no need. Have you seen how hot a coke cola tin can heat up to using as a small rocket stove, just look for a Xmas buscuit tin or ebay small tin. Just pour veg oil into that and away you go! They can withstand the heat no problem.

I keep having this thought. Something like your heater here, mounted in something like an old air conditioner case. Winter comes, you take the screen off your window and sit it in. Summer comes, you pull it out and put the screen back on. It would probably also make it really easy to vent outside, since it is already outside. I think I'm fixing to try a diesel heater, putting it outside and making a removable panel for my window that I can run the heat through. After looking at heaters for the last few weeks, I don't think I have ever ran across a non-electric window unit. Everything I have ever seen is a basically an AC that has an electric heater in it.

If you put that heater partially outside, it will partially lose it's functionality. It will probably also scorch your window frames. :)

@@TheBushdoctor68 I came up with an altered version that is working pretty well. Chinese diesel heater sitting outside is pumping hot air in through a window as I sit here typing this. Next spring, I can just take it out and put it in storage.

@@TheBushdoctor68 It is cheaper than electricity but more expensive than my wood heater. I needed it for a back bedroom just a little too far away from the wood stove. I *think* I'm getting about 20 hours out of a couple of gallons of diesel. I'm in Texas, so I can get away with just running it 2 - 3 hours in the morning a lot of days. It's working out as planned so far. There are bunches of videos on youtube with actual testing of how long they run per liter of diesel. I wouldn't take my word for it. Other sources I found say: 1.5l to 2.5l per 10 hrs. It also depends on if you run it on high or not. I pretty much have to run it on high.

How is it "portable," when it's attached to a metal tube that is attached to the wall/window? You would have to detach from the wall and than open a new hole somewhere else.

Galvanization contains zinc, which becomes toxic when heated. What about the original green paint of the ammo box? Does it create toxic emission under that golden metalic coat of paint when heated? What if it was spray painted with high heat paint? Thank You for the great videos.

I am building version 2, the horizontal ammo can, and just waiting on the high heat glass. It will be built as one unit mounted on a concrete board and will easily fit in my window so no wall penetrations required.

Get you a small mig welder and some plate steel and go crazy. I've seen one that has a mist of oil sprayed and through a copper tube that was perty cool .

I think if the exhaust pipe can be blocked by an air filter, it can remain inside the house and may cause even more heat as it does otherwise. Filter can be custom made or can be used car engine filter but it may require a custom pipe. But I am sure there are many options available over the shelf with least or minimum work required to be installed in the current setup.

That's not corrugated metal. Corrugated has a lot of ridges. I like V 2. It seems like a good idea people have to use carbon felt for the wick.

You should try a version that uses beeswax as fuel. It burns clean, hot and for a long time. Could do away with exhausting your heat out altogether

What matt and some of the others have said about using heavier grade materials and toxic fumes.also. have you studied or looked into how to convert heat directly into electricity yet? Thermodynamics? I only ask because you can also convert heat to energy and power dc stuff...like the pc fan in V1 and 2. make a double box set up. A smaller one to convert the heat into energy to power the fan and one to burn the oil in. This is a cool experiment. if you scale it up though, you're gonna end up adding the cost of what would be a normal electricity bill, to your monthly grocery bill. Another option is something I've seen recently. A Rocket Mass Heater in an enclosed porch. it'll cost you waaay more money in outlay and labor but you can scavenge what you need to fuel it, for essentially free. just taking the piles for instance of a chopped down tree and transporting all that to your house and stacking it up. actually if I owned the house I live in I'd consider it.

How do you turn the heater off . Do you just block the air intake? Use a fire extinguisher, pick it up and throw it in the river , run away, fill the box with water or sand, call the fire department, or some other method ?

I applaud the ingenuity. In general, I think DIY projects are great; not only do you learn a lot from building something like this, but you develop a sense of self-reliance 💪. However, this heater really isn't safe to use indoors. For one, galvanized steel releases zinc fumes when heated -- these are extremely poisonous. The "heat-resistant glass" looks like acrylic or polycarbonate to me -- also a really bad idea to use this in close proximity to a flame, as it will eventually melt and possibly catch fire. The threaded rod mount looks pretty flimsy, and could topple over. Then your house burns down :( The paint for the downspout isn't rated for such high temperatures; it will eventually burn and release poisonous fumes. To anyone considering building this design and installing it in your home: please don't! Just buy a proper heater that complies with local codes.

All those metal components will rust at an accelerated rate. If my woodstove made out of steel is any indication.... Ditto the comment about galvanized steel. You're not suppose to weld it for the toxic fumes, so I assume any high heat may do the same. Just be aware. If you make your exhaust pipe at a 45 degree angle, you'll extract more heat out of it before it exits the building.

Seriously, it's not worth selling...poor Daniel would get sued w/in 6 months because of some super smart individual with zero situational awareness. Liabilities are not worth making even $100k selling these. He'd be lucky if he made even that much money. Plus, for most normies, who does the install? Guarantee no bonded contractor would touch this. This is solely a DIY at your own risk.

So for v4. Use 99.99% pure carbon felt. (not the plastic fake stuff, you'll know because it cannot burn) You can use it to wick, and since it does not burn, it is an infinite wick. HAS TO BE the REAL 99.99% carbon felt, not the fake chinese stuff. It can wick off of vegetable oil, for instance, for hours. Check out Robert Murray Smith for a good video demonstrating how to get it working. Also, when you are routing pipe/ducts. Avoid 90 degree bends. It restricts airflow massively. This is true when dealing with either water or air. You can have ten 30degree angles, and those will restrict flow less than one 90 degree bend. simple direct port in from the outside (driven by a small fan on stale days) and a simple direct port on the opposite corner facing inward, would be optimal. In fact, if you put the in port and out ports at an angle with the flames at the same angle (and perhaps a small mesh to break up windforce and keep bugs out) so that they line up on the path in, that would be the most optimal design. Straight line. It will make the inside of your box look angled You want 0 obstruction of flow, but you will need a mesh to keep the bugs/windforce from blowing out your box. Could even rig up meshes so that you can push them to line up and restrict flow more/less. Depending on how windy it is, and how strong your fan is etc.

MAKE THIS HEATER : This heater is a steam heater and gets very ,very hot. It can heat your whole house. All it does is it rotates a small barrel with many holes in it inside another barrel. The rotation causes the water to heat up very fast and turn to steam. You can make a bicycle version of this.

Oh no! Don't use galvanized for your heater metal. That will give off deadly toxic fumes. It's a real danger to welders know about when working with galvanized, plus the heat removes the coating anyway. So you're better off getting untreated steel because that's what you'll end up with - if you survive.

Really glad to see that the We are We are We are Thing is gone, good job, much easier to listen to. Very interesting to see the different ideas being used from one version to the next.
