On my 748s , I was carrying more speed into and out of corners than 1000RR machines, my demise was on the straight, got a great run at a 1000RR on the straight but I missed a gear , was side by side; but coming into corners on the limit of engine braking with the rear dancing under braking (No slipper clutch), out of all the lads with their 1000cc machines, auto blippers and traction, wheelie control ; I probably had the biggest smile under the helmet , no abs , no traction control , no wheelie control , no slipper clutch , yes half the power but complete control of whats underneath you, its your input that determines how the bike reacts and you who controls how the bike responds; wont get a bigger smile than getting the two to work in harmony

25 years old and can keep up with new bikes in the corners in street tyres while new bikes are on slicks and only loses out on power is really testament of how right the 916 design was, nevermind that it's timeless design, sort the brakes with modern Brembo and the character-full Italian electric and it'd be ace.

Timeless bike. Had a 916sps as a young man as I was a Carl fogarty fanatic. Saved for years to get one. Adored it even though it was uncomfortable, pretty unreliable and a lot of work. Sold it when I got divorced. Always regretted it. I just bought a 998 final edition with 1,000 miles that was in dry storage for 15 years. I adore them yet I wouldn’t really recommend them to anyone. Ownership is for the dedicated. Still the most iconic looking bike I’ve seen. Aged so well !!!

I don't want to hurt anyones feelings but after having owned a 98 for one season back in 2002, The parts they glossed over was 1) It is slow 2) It self destructs - I would never consider endurance racing it (I'm still finding various spares for it around my garage) 3) The gas tank seemed very squared/sharp so after several hard breaking laps, I always felt like I was punched in the stomach. 4) The stock tractor battery weighted about 50lbs and sucked. 5) Spare parts were always scarce. Nice to look at but for me it was just too needy and unpractical. Thanks for bringing the memory back.

Great video as usual. I currently own a 2002 998 and absolutely love it. Of course, I often wonder what it would be like to have something newer, faster, and more electronically advanced. An older and still very capable bike like this brings up several interesting questions: how much more power do I want? How much power is too much for the road? Should I "upgrade" to newer machinery but lose the more visceral riding experience? I dont know the answer to any of these questions, but your video brings them back to the forefront of my mind. Cheers.
