Q Karma/minions right when her chain finishes to close gap near her. Even if you get cc'd you are now one step closer to her and she is useless from this point on even if she shield runs away Yi is way faster. And always hit minions or anything next to you while chasing/running, this will lower Q cd and allow outplays faster (such as right after @12:11, hit minions to lower cd since turret is not aggro anymore).

Even though Q doesn't break karmas tether, if you wait until the root is just about to go off, it'll occur while you're in alpha and then the root is almost finished by the time you come out

I think you're right about Essence Reaver for mana. Yi's mana cost on his W increases based on your % max mana, so its better to have items that restore/regen mana than items that increase your max mana.
