From towers to dishes to linear mirrors to troughs, concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies reflect and collect solar heat to generate electricity. A single CSP plant can generate enough power for about 90,000 homes. This video explains what CSP is, how it works, and how systems like parabolic troughs produce renewable power.
For more information on the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's CSP research, see the Solar Energy Technology Program's Concentrating Solar Power Web page at www1.eere.energ....

This is a great video about solar power. I definitely researching more about solar energy overall and switching your home and living green! You'll save so much money in the long run. My family just bought solar panels from SILICON SOLAR and it's been really amazing.

I wonder if you could do a hybrid concentrated solar/geothermal power plant with both a high temp steam power turbine and a lower temp power system (refrigerator compressor running backwards, temperature differences making electricity instead of electricity making temperature differences) basically you uses solar in the day and the geothermal resource at night, throwing any excess solar generated heat underground.

Hello.. I have a query please.. While the HTF in the parabolic trough system reaches as hot as 390 C or so, how the steam temperature (that runs the turbine) can be raised to more than 500 C ? Thanks a lot
@701983
@701983 4 жыл бұрын
Where are your numbers from? You might have mixed up different systems (trough, tower) and/or different heat transfer media. You can't get steam of 500 degree celsius with thermal oil, but for instance with molten salt. The Gemasolar solar power plant (solar tower) would be an example for over 500 C with molten salt. "Nevada Solar One" (parabolic trough) uses thermal oil, which can be heated up to 400 C.

Collectors are one time cost and they don't cost much more then the money spent on the fuel for a conventional power plant over its life time. There are already several gigawatt solar plants going up in Arizona. Would be better if there were more but it's a start..

@mrhippo79. Stop mixing up the numbers here! 250MW peak times 8760hours a year equals = 2,19TWh. (250 * 10^6 J / s * 8760h/year). Of course its not peak all the time (because of night and shade and sun - angles) . Say its peak sunny about 2500 hours/year. Then the produced amount would be: 250MW * 2500h/year = 0.625TWh or 625GWh. Still a handsome amount of power from a desert that can't produce anything else of value.

Haha, I was thinking about storaging heat. There is still something missing in this idea, you can use it for desaltination of sea water and use that water to provide energy trough a water power central.

The system works only efficiently if the sun is traveling high up, right? Otherwise, the efficiency would be low because the movement is limited to one axis. Meaning it would be only efficient in the region of the equator.

@@J0E1L3 Usually, heat storage is just for a couple of full-load-hours. To shift solar energy from midday to the evening (rather high energy demand). There is no CSP-plant which can run on buffered heat for days. On cloudy days, there is no electricity production. Some CSP-plants are hybrids and can run on natural gas too.

How much land would such a power plant need compared to a modern coal burner?
@Albtraum_TDDC
@Albtraum_TDDC Жыл бұрын
Less if you count all the strip mining devastation. Not to mention the toxic fumes, the radioactive ash (yes, coal power plants emit more radioactivity in the surrounding area than nuclear power plants), the increasing costs of operating and maintenance. (and the eventual running out of coal).

I just figured out how to produce energy that can be given back the grid in Arizona three to four times a day in Alaska the same amount and how I thought to do this how can we do this so that the homeowner never has to worry about the longevity of their batteries anymore and we do it by converting to capacitor high low capacitors that are capable of storing the years worth of energy capacitors that can give back to grid three or four times a day capacitors capacitors people we need to do this I don't even have a home yet but my first home is going to have solar panels with capacitors

+Reuben JJ Unless you're trolling this is funny, but due to the climate change many animal species have been severely affected, many have died. the main reason of climate change is due to pollution, which generates the green house effect, you may say many birds are dying, but if we as society don't do anything about it, your precious birds wont exist anymore.
