Needed: An aluminum can. A sheet of copper foil of 0.3-0.4mm. Two insulating rubber spacers. An engine of a cd rom 2-3 volts, to be recovered from the inside of a PC. 1 liter of water with 3-4 tablespoons of salt for foods.The duration of rotation of the motor is approximately 7-8 minutes. When the salt water loses energy, it must be filled with fresh water and salt. For the success of this experiment it is necessary to have an engine that has a low power consumption 15-20 mA max and a voltage of 2-3 volts of a motor of a cd rom inside the pc. The use of engines for toys are not suitable for this type of experiment.* The copper foil can't be replaced with other metals.

To answer all the questions how this works: Its a galvanic cell. The electricity is produced by the flow of electrons from the aluminium to the copper. The reaction based on this is the redox reaction. The salt water just connects the to parts and improves the flow of electrons. More salty water only increases the power to a cap where no more salt can be solved in the water. The saltwater is NOT the source of the electricity, it just carries it.

diamondlife Why don't you do the math? you have all the info for this setup 2-3 volt, 20mA motor, you just need to convert it to watts and scale it from there. But i will just say that to power a 10watts LED light this setup is not enough you need something much bigger, about running time is anybody's guess.

Electricity comes from charged ions released when the salt is absorbed by the water. When salt is dried from water, the salt is released by charged photons. Also, this process changes the Ph of water, so fish would die if this is used at a large scale T_T *tear*

@organizedmarketing
@organizedmarketing 9 жыл бұрын
+Steven l Campbell interestingly enough if you reverse the proses. you start electrolysis and can actually transfer particles onto the metals from one another. like they do when they electroplate bumpers in a factory the difference in one of the metals is already broken down more than the other making it easier to coat one over the other. oh and a side byproduct is hydrogen and oxygen because the water is breaking down. as well as some sediment material. I think the actually use a stronger acid in a factory setting to better etching I am sure.. so you can see this simple experiment teaches us a lot.
