Join me as I take an updated look at Connecticut's premier dead mall, the Enfield Square Mall in Enfield, Connecticut.
This video focuses on the exterior of the mall and the buildings themselves.
I will do an updated walk-around of the inside of the mall sometime later in 2023.
This video was filmed in June 2023 on a Sunday around 3:00pm.
If you liked this video, please don't forget to give me a thumbs up, leave a comment and subscribe to my channel. I plan to have more dead mall videos in the future. Thanks for watching!

Do you remember the “meet ups” in the men’s room at the old G. Fox in West Farms back in the mid-80s? I was a college sophomore who worked in the store at the time, and there were some older men who really creeped me out. I only worked there for about a month around Christmastime, and the story was on the news shortly after. I certainly then understood why I was so uncomfortable around some of those “customers”.

The Cinemark is in pretty rough shape too. The theaters, at least the one I was in, are the old seats that don't recline. The theater itself wasn't too bad but the bathrooms were disgusting. 3 of the stalls were out of order. Doors and dividers were somehow falling off/tilting sideways. Toilets were overflowing and unusable. The men's room I went in had 1 functional stall. Sink faucet push buttons wouldn't stay on long enough to properly wash my hands either. The men's room in the mall itself was in similar shape. Tons of patch applied to the walls to try and cover up graffiti/holes. Just an all around mess.

As someone who lives only a few minutes away from this mall, I am very upset to see it go to this state. Ever since Sears closed there, literally the only place that is relevant anymore over there is the Target, and honestly it should be it's own thing completely separate from the mall. Literally only a few years ago this mall was thriving, now it's just slowly rotting away.

Leominster, MA has a similar condemned marking system, with a variance. If it's a "/", it means not to enter unless there's people trapped, or in need of help. The "X" is similar to most, but not to enter no matter what.

This is sad. I went to this mall in the 90s and it was a nice place. A sure sign of big trouble is using the fire extinquishers to prop the doors. That wasn't someone breaking in, that was the inspection team. Oddly they're paying someone to maintain the bushes. The walls behind same cannot be in good shape.

I had gone to the indoor craft fair in Nov/Dec 2022. Only a few very minor stains on some ceiling tiles near the entrance to the mall. The rest of the space looked to be in near pristine condition, with the exception of normal wear and tear on carpeting, etc.

Everyone always suggests this when the see a dead mall. But the problem is malls are not easily converted into usable living space, the HVAC system is no way suitable, the sewer system is not anywhere near the task of supporting people living there and the electrical is completely unsuitable as well. You could add windows to the exterior to give people some natural light, but the middle of the building would be either a wasteland you have to heat in the winter or have a bunch of windowless prison cells in the middle. Also, the upkeep on such a massive roof would bury any non profit organization in short order. This building is crumbling, trying to save it to convert it to something it's never been designed to do would be a massive waste of money and resources. It's not an old, well built house that's fallen on hard times, it's a cheaply made empty box that's falling down. It makes more sense to knock it down and build some brand new affordable housing on site.

It's completely bizarre to me that there is even a distinction between a dead mall and an abandoned mall. Why isn't it closed already? I live fairly close but haven't had any want or need to go to this particular mall, and I just looked it up on Google and it does say that they're open, but that is obviously incorrect - there may be a store or two open, but the mall clearly isn't if firefighters aren't allowed in the building unless there are people inside.

@@fleabittenadventures it's an observation about this phenomenon generally. When one goes to the mall one goes to the mall, not one store. It's one entity as far as everyone is concerned, except the owner apparently. Bizarre. You'd think that either the owner would kick everyone else out, or more likely that anyone with a store still open would close once at least half of the stores had left. Who on earth would want a store in a building that's falling apart is almost entirely abandoned? Stupid.

It has 4 anchors 2x former Macys and 1x former Sears and a occupied Target, movies and a decent number of in-line tenants, some of which are new. As they are all connected, they are required to fix it as a fire in that section, with the missing tiles would get up into the void between the drop ceiling and roof and spread before sprinklers could activate. The tiles keep the heat and smoke down to allow sprinklers or smoke detectors to properly activate.
