Notes:
1) Looking at the polite forms, this song is probably told from the point of view of a girl.
EDIT: I've found proof for my hypothesis in an interview from 2003 where Kyo has stated: "I suppose I wanted to express just how painful it was. "Zakuro" is told from the point of view of girl, but I put myself in the place of the girl when I write that kind of thing." 2) "The title of this song comes not necessarily from the pomegranate fruit but a sort of slang usage of the word which uses the image of the pomegranate, a fruit with lush blood red meat, to describe a wound. When I was a teenager I used to play along with a quitar, listen to the song, sign, and cry. It was a way to let all out. I still enjoy this song, but rather with a smile on my face now-a-days.

Dir en Grey is without a doubt the best band in the world. Such an emotional performance. I noticed when Kyo starts the self-harm (poor Kyo), the other members will look at their instruments or look away from him.

Actually, watashi is a gender-neutral pronoun used by both men and women. But men mostly use it as polite/formal language. I'd agree though that in this context watashi seems very feminine and that the speaker is likely a woman I can't remember which interview it is, but Kyo states himself this is 'most likely', as the translation put it, from the viewpoint of a woman. Kyo has often done this, and it certainly doesn't mean he isn't channelling his own experiences and emotions through this song.

There's a girl that I loved for over two years of my short life ( I'm 17 years old) and she pushed me away. I spent this whole year trying to get over her, I thought I was but I'm starting to see that the progress I've made is small. There were so many times that I wanted to let go and act out like Kyo did but seeing him do it is what's stopping me. I think I'll never know the pain he went through regardless of how shitty I feel right now. Somehow this helps me. Damn I miss her.

Dude, I love how this song is so visceral, emotionally raw and powerful, and so is Diru's performance - but Kyo's self-harming scares the actual fuck out of me. How do Toshiya, Die, Kaoru and Shinya keep up with that?!

Well, they never were friends and basically everyone follows their own path, without caring too much about the other, so I think they really don't care about Kyo self-harming during the perfomance. They just play and let him be.

Amane Mizuhashi DIR EN GREY it's... a weird band. They are together just because DIR EN GREY gives them freedom; freedom to express themselves in the music. They have said they don't even talk during recording song in the studio. I am trying to understand how this interesting and well-built music can really come for such a group of people who don't even talk.

I just saw that some people said on the comments that this translation isn't correct, may I ask how? this translation there is very correct.When you just re watch again, the only mistake you can point out is that in the breakdown part, where Kyo says ''hai ni naru'' (Reduced to ashes) is ''I love you'' which is not really a very big mistake, it can be misheard like that, and to be honest, I think it looks and feels better to listen to the song, and thinking he says that instead, it fits more.Watch other translations, everyone else subbed it like that, but Peri got the whole translation so much better and in literal meaning, it isn't really easy to translate Diru songs in literal meaning, if you really don't like her translations and even complain, I would advice you to translate Kyo's lyrics by yourself, this translation here is very correct.

I think he actually does, as later version stated "I don't love you" rather than "it turns to ashes" It actually fits the song more IMHO because it is the raw pain of lingering love that causes that song to be so powerful. What you think ?

Okay, so I'd like to know everyone's take on the disco ball. (You too, Peri) It's clearly relevant to the song, especially since it was brought out during the "Mode of" performance as well. I highly doubt Kyo is a fan of disco. For me, being American, that only leaves one thing: prom.

The disco ball is used as a stage effect to create scattered light that looks like "ashes" as referenced in the song. Has nothing to do with prom lmao.

I read that Kyo had a girlfriend who he loved and even engaged with her, and planning to get married with her, but later she cheated on him and that broke his heart so much, could that be about her? and I don't understand why would you hurt Kyo, he is a genius an such a beautiful poet and songwriter, watching him sing this painfully makes me cry.

uuuh, it's totally possible. I had a lover who was a relatively well-known singer and poet, and I can tell you he was (and still is) gorgeous to the eyes, and brilliant as a performer. I consider him a true artists, and his fans of course loved him crazily and consider him an idol, but on a personal level, he was just a common person, nothing special. Pretty boring, sometimes. Music is what makes him look like a great human being, I don't know Kyo but I guess it might be something like that ( Kyo artistically is on another level, I am aware of that, but we don't know him personally). The artist is one thing, the man another one. This justifies the absence of love, of course, not the cheating. if you don't love someone, before you betray their trust, you should just tell them. I don't know if my answer make any sense to you, but I felt like answering because your question was so passionate.

KremIsis Oh thanks so much for your answer! thank you for saying how my question was passionate, I think the same about your answer, and yes actually music is what makes a lot of people look so good, because you just see them in stage, singing, and a lot of people cheering for them, idolizing them, loving them, but not mostly seeing them despite the concerts, music videos and sometimes interviews, their friends, spouses get to know more about them and their personality, of course being a boring person just like you say can cause that, but betraying is just like you say is not justifiable, we don't really know Kyo personally much like you say, but we know that he doesn't believe in happiness and writes songs that are often about very disturbing and taboo subjects, it can be a case like you said but also can not be because we aren't friends with Kyo and we are just fans appreciating his music, but we can also see how much being betrayed hurt Kyo :(
