9 күн бұрынThe name “Chinese Taipei” is sure to be heard at the Paris Olympics 2024, just like many other international sporting events. Some may recognize this team, while others are probably confused about where to find their country on a map. This is a documentary of how the official name of Taiwan’s sports teams (OR Team Taiwan) came to be.
It all started when the Chinese Civil War ended in 1949. A series of events unfolded leading to a 1981 decision to re-name Taiwan’s sports teams as team “Chinese Taipei.” A choice with lasting repercussions that are continuously felt in Taiwan to this day.
The story behind “Chinese Taipei” and the contention surrounding an ongoing identity crisis is about much more than meets the eye. Director Garret M. Clarke conducted interviews with athletes, sports professionals, and spectators alike because it was important to hear “Taiwanese people express their opinions in their own way.”
The name “Chinese Taipei” is a struggle for political power that dictates an athlete’s right to play as much as it denies sports fans and children around the world an opportunity to connect with Taiwan. Due to the complex historical background and political factors, not only the international community but Taiwanese ourselves argue about our names. But just remember, no matter what you call it--the Republic of China(ROC), Taiwan, or Chinese Taipei in some cases--it is an independent and democratic country seperated from The People's Republic of China(PRC). Being a Taiwanese is difficult, but I'm proud of it.

@@yen-chensu4739 我也是最近才知道，台灣人講的台獨跟中國認定的其實不太一樣。簡單來說，認為中華民國獨立於中華人民共和國的叫作華獨，認為臺灣應該脫離「中華民國」而使用新國號是台獨。但我認為這並不值得成為國內各派爭吵的議題，在國際情勢已經艱困之下，我們更應該做的是團結所有愛這個國家的人，而不是因為名義上的不同就覺得對方不愛國、不愛台灣！

I first saw that Chinese Taipei moniker back in the early 80s while watching the Little League world series telecast. Funny, as I looked back into the early history of Little League baseball, the ROC flag and "Taiwan" was used whenever they competed at Williamsport.

Taiwanese Pangcah boxer Chen Nien-Ching (陳念琴) notably said "wawa no pangcah" after winning her match. The phrase means "child of the Pangcah" and it's one of the most impressive things in recent Taiwanese sports history.

Because Chiang Kai-shek insisted on representing China exclusively himself and claimed to be the legitimate representative despite changes in global situations. As other countries began recognizing the People's Republic of China, he refused to compromise by using "Chinese Taipei" rather than "Taiwan."

I am a Taiwanese and a citizen of the Republic of China. Taiwan is the only territory owned by the Republic of China today. I will not be dissatisfied just because the name of the Republic of China has not changed. However, Taiwan now does not belong to the People's Republic of China, nor does it belong to China. I will always be proud of my country, the Republic of China, Taiwan, and proud to be a Taiwanese. I hope that one day China will stop using hegemony over Taiwan and recognize and face up to the fact that Taiwan, the Republic of China, has officially become an independent entity. Otherwise, it will always be China’s shame.

3:40 It's not true that "there can only be one team per country." British and all European countries managed to make all those teams of their colonies. As long as you are allowed to establish an Olympic Committee, you can participate in Olympic events using the name of your Olympic Committee. We were not allowed to name our Olympic Committee Taiwan or ROC when we applied for it. It's all about the IOC standing with PRC and bullies athletes from Taiwan/ROC. Shame on IOC, while all the western countries have been promoting self-identity - let people identify as who they are. IOC rather stand with the power and $, than justice. Many interviees misunderstood, we do NOT have to be recognized as an independent country to rename our Olympic committee. We just need to be allowed to do so by IOC.

When the world facing SARS pandemic, almost no country give assistance to Taiwan at that time. And WHO is not exception. Controlled by Beijing, the authorities concerned neglected all the Taiwanese health and impressed us Taiwanese with their word"Who care about you?". 台灣只能先「釐清」與美國的關係，台灣相當於美國的海外佔領區，可以正名為「日本台灣」，可以制定「新憲法」或「基本法」，新旗幟、新徽記等等，可以參加國際組織，可以以美國海外獨立關稅區之身分，不必繳交美國政府聯邦稅，釐清與美國關係後，台灣人民可以公投要不要「建國」，因為我們堅信：美國對台灣沒有領土野心。

We used to have a proper, decent and beautiful name Taiwan, or Formosa Taiwan. Taiwanese people will continue to work towards the goal of using our original name again. I might not see this happening in my lifetime, there will always be generations after generations and even if that's going to take hundreds of years...

Not just Chinese Taipei, but on any website where you need to fill in your country, you can't find Taiwan; instead, it's listed as 'Taiwan, China' or as a province of China. I feel very angry and sad about this. I want to proudly and loudly declare that Taiwan is a country, not a part of China.

以UN有會員國或觀察員身分將全世界地圖畫上顏色，只有2處是空白的。其中1個地方是台灣，另1個地方是南極大陸。 How hypocritical UN is by looking at the UN Charters and UN Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR). Are Taiwanese people not Human but penguins so that Taiwanese people cannot own their human rights?

@@xiongcat8695 沒錯，中華民國1949年戰敗，因此統治的領土範圍變小，但我們還是一個國家。中華民國有領土和人民，有完整運作的政府和法律，是獨立的經濟體。至於主權，我在上面已經詳述過了，各國被施壓不能直接承認我們，卻仍和我們有實際上的外交；除了中共和幾個專制國家之外，其他國家都稱呼我們的總統為總統。這全是事實，並非狡辯，如果你只相信你們政府說的，而覺得我胡說八道，那麼建議你別用yt以免顛覆了你的世界觀。

為什麼台灣人無國籍？ 台灣是誰的？ 是住在台灣的人的 ， 是中華民國的 ，還是本土台灣人的，大家都想要，但是卻沒有人拿得到， 為什麼？ 因為1895年大日本天皇從滿清手上得到台灣後，開始建構台灣，一直到1945年4月1日在台灣實施明治憲法，台灣從此即是日本天皇神聖不可分割的領土了。 台灣人也成了日本天皇的臣民，擁有大日本國的國籍。 雖然日本天皇擁有台灣卻無法管理台灣； 原因在二戰結束後，日本戰敗美國佔領了日本台灣，這就是TCG台灣民政府在台灣宣導十幾年來所詮釋的［日屬美佔］現象。 也就是目前美、日、台三方一直對外宣稱的； 台灣有事，美國就有事，日本更有事。 本土的台灣人您看懂了嗎？

The People's Republic of China inherited its international powers from the Republic of China (e.g., permanent seat in the United Nations, sovereignty over the South China Sea). In the 22 years between the establishment of the P.R.C. in 1949 and the official expulsion of R.O.C. diplomats by the UN in 1971, it was the R.O.C. government, which actually governed only some islands, that suppressed the P.R.C. government, and represented the whole China in the international arena. Taiwan is very good at packaging itself as a "victim", but in fact what the P.R.C. is doing now is much milder than what the R.O.C. did back then, when the R.O.C. wanted to counter-attack the entire mainland from a single island in the southeast, whereas what the P.R.C. wants is for the R.O.C. to accept the fact that it has already lost the civil war. Secondly, the island of Taiwan is actually only one of the areas ruled by the R.O.C. The R.O.C. actually controls two provinces, one is Taiwan Province and the other is Fujian Province, which includes the islands of Kinmen and Matsu, of which Kinmen is only 1.8km away from the mainland China, and it was the last frontline of confrontation during the Chinese Civil War. If the name of the Republic of China is to be changed to Taiwan, shouldn't they first take the initiative to return all the territories outside the island of Taiwan to China? Even in their own definition, these places belong to Fujian Province.

在台灣沒退出聯合國時，靠著美國起碼能以中華民國跟中共抗衡，退出後，中共更肆無忌憚的打壓台灣，不僅讓台灣的人民從中華民國，中華民國在台灣，到現在大部分的人認為台灣就是一個國家，而且台灣本來就具備國家一切的條件跟資格，除了畏懼大陸的金錢跟強權有那一個國家能說台灣不是國家
