When he's playing he always looks like he's just about to start singing. Well, he IS singing with his guitar. Hey, he can sing with his voice, too!

Endless respect for this man! Immense talent combined with incredibly hard work and still as humble as they come.

The man has talent, no doubt, but he also has a rare work ethic. He talks honestly about what it takes to play the way he does. It takes time, patience, discipline, and a practice routine that eschews mere noodling. One thing he said really stuck with me. He said everytime you pick up the guitar, you have to have a specific objective in mind: What little phrase of a piece do you want to have mastered before you put the guitar back down. It may be no more than two measures.

The audience's response to Richard's breathtaking performance is muted, unenthusiastic and almost as if they were applauding some wanna-be amateur! Instead of which they were witnessing one of the greatest living exponents of ALL modern and traditional styles of guitar playing. What I like about Richard's playing is not only his phenomenal technique and incredible musicality (no matter what genre takes his fancy) but his personality is so unassuming, so modest; it's almost as if he were completely unaware of his mastery - his complete command of his instrument.

I am almost ashamed to admit as a person who first picked up a guitar in 1951 that I know very little about this virtuoso, but listening to his playing brings tears to my eyes, and a tip of my cap. a true genius who, make no mistake has worked for every note.

From a shy little 11 year old boy standing next to Chet Atkins on a stage in London to the greatest guitarist and entertainer today, he's become gift to all of us who loves the guitar. All ten thumbs up.

I've been playing for 30 years and I don't have 5% of Richard's skills. Awesome techniques at work, everything is so crisp and clear, amazing.

had the great luck to hear him recently in a little guitar in Longmont Colorado. Only about 20 people there but he played like there were 2000. What a great evening and super nice (humble) guy. And of course mind blowing perfection (and fun).

My youtube recommendation bar glitched out for this video and as such showed no recommendations at all for further viewing... In my heart, I know it's because nothing could top the lovely mood and emotion expressed by Smith's playing :)

His knowledge of harmony is stunning. And he knows where it fits on the guitar. I just wish his guitar had a different sound. Maybe it is better live. But there is no doubt, Richard Smith is a great guitarist. One of the finest.
