Some engines are set up so the cam belt tensioner actually holds spring- loaded tension on the belt all the time, some are set up so the spring tension is only for ' setting ' the belt tension and you then lock it down tight. Just did a Nissan 3.3 and the spring on the tensioner was only for ' setting ' purposes and then you lock it tight in place. Ford 2300 motors were like that as well. Ford Zetec motors use the full time spring tension on the twin cam belt.

Yep that happens. Replaced a timing set on a 2.0 turbo JL wrangler not long ago. Under 100k miles rattling like no other rattle ive heard before. From what I seen the tensioner gave out like that one and the chain was slapping a part of a guide that was metal. Replaced guides, chains, and tensioners. Back to sorta quiet again. Those 2.0L turbos are always noisy though lol.

My best friend had a sonata with the 2.7 and had that noise. Dealer got them for a big job. The dealer replaced the power steering pump and it was never right them the water pump an still the noise was there. I did the timing belt because it had over 200k on original and found the tensioner bad as well. I took tensioner apart and found the spring was broken. Hard brittle spring. Thanks for sharing Kenny.

Get a "plastic welder" comes in VERY handy for that kinda stuff. I bought 1 of the earlier version kits, to repair plastic gas tanks, on 10ft U-Haul trucks. Thieves would drill holes to steal every drop of gas ! lol Or they'd cut filler neck hoses a LOT on bigger trucks.... My boss then, of course, had to out do me, and buy the newer, nicer version plastic welder. Comes with lots of type of plastic rods. wire mesh etc. Basicly, it's a soldering gun, with flat diamond shaped tips, etc.

My Odyssey's maintenance schedule says that it gets a new timing belt (and water pump) every 100k, guess what? That's what I do, I don't need to be stranded in the side of the road with a blown engine. The Odyssey's V6 is an interface engine, so I REALLY don't like playing the "push it till it breaks" game with the timing belt.

I had a Mazda 626 V6. Similar noise. Idle dead smooth, 2000 revs clattering it’s arse off, 3000 dead smooth, 4000 clattering. Etc. The timing belt tensioner had lost its shock absorber damping oil and it just now a spring and it had clattered so hard the bush and pin bolt were nearly destroyed. It was cool to view the belt go from dead smooth to a wild ride to smooth throughout the rev range due to the belt cam harmonics.

I learned with the servicing of my own cars if you're getting the belt done, do the tensioner. I track the service work done on our cars. My wife's Odyssey was due for a belt change. The next year tensioner was leaking and had to be changed. Would have saved money to get it all done at the same time I'm sure plus the time it was in for service.

When I did the belt in my Ridgeline I changed the water pump and tensioners too. No worries for another 100k I hope.

Very good video Kenny. I think I should change the chain tensioner on my BMW. It's 14 years old. Just put two new turbos in it at 148k miles. Talk about expensive.

People might crap on Hyundai/Kia but to be fair.. I’ve had a lot of success with em, wife had a 2011 Sorento KS2 2.2 ran that for 2 years got to 220,000 miles, never touched a spanner! And I’ve ran 5-6 Hyundai coupes (G4G’s and V6’s) and never really had much of an issue with them (aside rust)

I put over 400,000 miles on a 3 cylinder geo metro (100 miles each way to and from work) yes 400,000 miles with regular maintenance and left the timing cover off so then i could replace the timing belt in 15 minutes for some reason they wouldnt last long and the other thing was take out that 80/90 gear oil in the trans that gm put in it and put auto trans fluid that Suzuki put in it b4 shiping to Canada that 80/90 was the main reason 5th gear would go out at 80,000 miles and keep EGR VALVE CLEAN to keep #3 valves from burning

Years ago I worked on the transaxle for my Ford Escort and had it all apart and observed how it was all set up. Then on Escort forums guys would be arguing over putting 90wt. gear oil in the axle instead of the ATF. I would comment on how there was one gear - I think it was 5th high gear - that was off of the end of the gearbox by itself and was lubricated by a small tray running through the end of the gear case. I told them I don't think that gear lube 90wt. would travel down that tray the same as ATF and that they might starve out that gear. Looks like a very similar situation and my theory was right, only GM put the gear oil in it when it needed thinner ATF

Should have put a timing kit in it and been done with it. Being cheap makes the algorithms happy but patch jobs always come back to bite.

Yup, had belt done at dealer on a Odyssey, they didn't change tensioner. Next year it was leaking and needed to be changed, could have been done for the price of the part when belt was done.

I had a 06 Honda Odyesse doing the same thing. Another shop said that it needed an engine and wasn't worth fixing. Oil filled timing belt tensioner was just a flopping.

Our 2007 Dodge Magnum 3.5L engine suddenly was having engine problems. Bucking, lack of power, MIL code 0016. I was shocked what the cause was. A water pump bolt rusted and broke off. It got caught up in the timing belt drive sprocket (on the crankshaft), and knocked the timing off by 3 teeth. The Mechanic said we were lucky not to have lost the engine. It is an interference engine.

Interestingly enough, the ONLY motors I've come across with timing belts are interference motors. Anyway, I wondered as I watched the beginning of the video whether this wasn't a classic case of "car owner thinks a serpentine belt is a timing belt" because the serp and tensioner were new.........

I see this all the time with Honda J series V6's that sound TERRIBLE when the timing belt tensioner fails and a couple times on a Hyundai/Kia.

Can I ask a question. is the power steering like the transmission fluid whereas if it's old you shouldn't change it. I've got a 2007 Santa Fe power steering is not leaking Has a little noise in the morning when it's cold I wanted to drain the reservoir and put fresh fluid would this be advisable.

I always replace timing belt, pulleys and water pump at the same time every 100k; often pulley and water pump bearings fail, which then causes the belt to fail; worn timing belts don't make noise anyway.

It's a shame that so much is just junk today. It used to be very rare to see something commonly fail, today it's expected to fail and need a replacement...that's also junk.

Hello Kenny! I have a concern for you. We have a 2014 F150 Platinum 4x4. It has a 3.5 V6 Eco boost. When I put it into service last fall, it was reported to me all fluids were brown. I changed Transmission fluid last month, do I have to change other fluids Power Steering, Brake, transfer case and rear ends?

Your owners manual should give you service intervals for fluids. With that said, I never thought of changing power steering fluid until our Tacoma with 240k miles started developing power steering pump cavitation noises. The fluid was dark and screen on bottom of reservoir was plugged...cleaned, flushed, and refilled and works good lasts long time. However I have a '93 Civic with 390k miles and never changed PS fluid.

Yep.Interference motor? Timing belt breaks, can destroy engine valves and possibly pistons.

Depends on the make of the vehicle & the position of the belt (the harder to get to the more hours it takes to do.Find a manual hard copy or download from the net that will give you an idea on cost.

Try to stay with OEM for something like this since it's supposed to last around 100,000 miles plus between changes Aftermarket, is eh.... Just do the research for your particular brand of vehicle

It's got a stuffed tensioner on the timing belt a very common problem although I had a 2/7 G6EA motor the other week with a louder knock & it was cyl 5 piston broke around one side of the small end of the con rod & kia/hyundai couldn't supply std pistons even korea had no stock so the car was scraped cuz a flogged out motor with 300,000kms on it are selling for around AU$3000.

I’m 74 years old. Back in my teenage years when I started playing with cars , you mentioned that there wasn’t a piston available. Anyway because of not having money ( I think ) or again parts not available, I knew of a machine shop that would use other parts from other engines to repair broken engine. He would use Chrysler parts on Chevrolet, Ford parts on Chrysler; whatever it took to repair people’s vehicles. Basically a little machining and make it work. Definitely NOT the remove and replace world we are in today. Thanks
