Emergency landing due to real engine failure at 1500ft AGL. Concern was to land properly and to be able to recover the aircraft easily.
Good training made it possible, note the slip in ultra short final over the electric fence...Done without thinking, just applying the training.
Carburator failure. I had a divertion airfield 10' ahead but couldn't maintain level flight that's why I'm alreay assessing this short farm on the right.The engine provides thrust with a propeller. No thrust no level, but rotor still provides lift.
Engine backfire at 0:35 I decided to land ASAP.
In downwind I tried to increase power but it shuts down at 0:54
Magneto off at 1:03 for safety purpose (in case of crash landing)
Touch down at 1:44 hopefuly yes you can hear the rotor spining due to what we call autorotation (free wheel rotor, not geared to the engine)
Thank you for all your comments, I hope it helped people to gain confidence in auto rotation emergency procedures and provided knowledge to others.
Fly safe !

People can criticize all they want, but any landing where you walk away from the aircraft, and not into an ambulance is a good landing... when landing a crippled aircraft, not further damaging it is just a bonus! Landing in a calm cool and collected manner with a crippled bird in an unusual place, that's a mark of good skill. Great job!

And this is why I love gyrocopters. I first fell in love with these machines when I first saw one at Oshkosh airshow way back in 1987. I believe it was a Benson gyrocopter but I’m not 100% sure. But the pilot did his thing and then took the craft up to about 1500 feet, cut the engine and let it “fall”. Came down, bounced a little bit and drove down the flightline waving at the mesmerized crowd.

After having flown Gyros years ago, I would rather an engine failure in a gyrocopter than any other aircraft. This vid shows why. Well done.

Good save Lionel! Been there, done that with my beloved little Benson B-8M gyro N31243 way back in the early 1980s. No damage and not even a scratch on me thankfully, but I did bruise my ego a little since the engine out was my fault. It was a gorgeous day and I was in a hurry to get back in the air after stopping in at the local airport to gas up. Unfortunately, in my excitement I didn't mix the oil in with the gas sufficiently and found out fairly quickly after takeoff that a 2-stroke engine won't run on oil alone. I immediately pitched the nose down to the required 45 degree engine-out glide angle to keep my rotor speed up, flared at around 10 mph, and it was all good. After draining the fuel line and twin carb float bowls on my McCulloch 2-stroke, and thoroughly mixing the fuel/oil mixture, I took off again and she purred like a kitten. People that have never flown a gyro, like you and I have, could never appreciate how much fun they are and how safe they are. Cheers from Thailand!

Great story, thanks for sharing! We all do mistakes don't blame yourself for that. Hopefully you handled it very well too! I'm just back from flying, I improvised a formation flight to another airfield, sandwich break and coffee stop with a guy who was preparing his giro two hangars away. That's also what I love in aviation, great people living their passion with huge enthusiasm, always ready to go ! Enjoy Thailand lucky you

Good job. I was a career ag pilot for 45 years and had 10 engine failures over that time, only one of them over 150' AGL, and miraculously no damage to any of the aircraft. I attribute it to luck and training. I was a flight instructor at 19 and had lots of practice. However, as interesting as a gyrocopter looks, I could never bring myself to attempt to fly one. I guess it's all relative - fear of the unknown and all that. Not much room for error considering your protection consists mainly of, well, air. As far as panic is concerned - that's where training and practice take over. You train your hands and feet to perform specific tasks - you can thank them later.

As a glider pilot , it is nice to see a powered aircraft engine failure landing handled smoothly. Some of the other KZfaq videos of emergency landings are very rushed and end in damage to the aircraft , even if the pilot walks away. Sometimes it looks like engine failure and field selection should be something practiced by power pilots, as it is with glider pilots (well, field selection anyway!).

@@lionelvuiglio7322 Actually for practice/training, this is often carried out the same way. Using a motor glider with the engine idling at a level which means the performance of the motor glider is similar to a "normal" glider, then once on final approach, climb away again.

A_Chaos_G I don't fly Gyro but I wouldn't want to land in a standing crop because the pilot would be used to landing on flat level ground. Oilseed Rape can be 6ft tall, Barley 3 ft tall, hard to tell at height and the extra drag could tip the aircraft causing lots of damage.
@lionelvuiglio7322
@lionelvuiglio7322 6 жыл бұрын
Hello, sorry for the late answer. Vertical descent is not possible for soft landing in a gyro so with the remaining airspeed when the landing gear hits the crops it will result in a blade flapping crash such as this one kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iryla7iTyNvTnGQ.html I did that choice at this particular time, maybe not the best but it worked well ;-) Fly safe!
