I kept waiting to see where/why The CCN was wrong. Guess the title is click bait. You got me. 😂 I've watched many of his videos and I've heard him talk specifically about the different schedules in the manual and the majority of people fit severe service, which 10k changes aren't. He's described your precise driving style as one that meets the long interval option. Great job with getting an oil analysis that proves exactly this.

I did a lot of highway driving in my 96 legacy. So I tested the oil with amsoil once or twice. Then after that I would go 25,000 miles between oil changes. At 360,000 miles the wheel wells in the back rusted out such that the shock towers no longer supported the vehicle. So the car rusted out before the engine gave up. In fact, I never had any real issues with that engine. It ran wonderfully on the day I drove it to the junk yard. But I babied that car. 65mph was my limit usually. And it was a stick shift.

It’s the filter that makes 10K possible. Needs to be made so it doesn’t break down during that length of time. Almost any synthetic will do 10K with a good filter and normal driving conditions (non-exclusive city, non-regular towing, etc). I’ve run Walmart oil for 10K with their 10K rated filter and Blackstone came back fine.

I think the biggest problem with extended oil changes is that a lot of car owners think that means you don't have to lift up the hood between oil changes. Of course nothing could be further from the truth. A lot of modern engines naturally consume significant amounts of oil because they were designed with looser fitting piston rings to reduce friction and save gas. Your Corolla may not consume much oil, but a lot of cars would be almost bone dry after 10,000 miles without periodically topping off the oil.

Like this: 5000 mile oil change interval.

I had an oil analysis done on our 2009 RAV4 (also with the 2.5 liter AR-FE engine) at it's last oil change and the results were excellent. I think wear metals were even lower than yours but our RAV4 only has 70,000 miles on it and I do change the oil every 5k. However, I use the Fram Ultra synthetic oil filter which is rated at 20,000 miles. So I change the filter every other oil change at 10k. That was the primary reason I did the analysis. I wanted to see if the filter was still doing it's job. No problem. The insolubles in mine were the same as yours at 0.2%. I use Super Tech 0W-20. No reason to pay more for a more expensive oil. I'm retired but we still drive mostly highway miles. We never idle the engine more than a minute or two before putting it in gear just to get the ATF flowing in the transmission before starting off per The Car Care Nut.

Jack: Great comment. My comments were going to be similar. I use the same set-up: Super Tech and Fram Syn filter. I even found the same oil at Costco (Kirkland) to be a hair cheaper and we were there anyways. Same manufacturer as Super Tech. Another mechanic was worried about my intervals (10k change) with my direct inject engine. IDK what to say about that.....I guess you could analyze things forever.

If you do at least one or two trips of 30min or more of highway miles a week, the full synthetic should stay good got 10k and 1 year. I would also add a PEA based gas treatment 2 or 3 times a year to help keep piston tops clear of carbon buildup... less heat retention and less oxidation especially as the car ages.

Carcarenut is not wrong. He told you the common statistics, not unicorn cases that you or some car lovers do. Yes, normal usages without many short trips, cold starts, we can easily do 10-20k miles per oil change. AMD only said that many of us are not eligible to be considered as normal usages and can do 10k miles intervals. I also do 15k miles oil change interval and my Sienna at 230k miles does not consume any oil. However, I live in the south and always drive at least 20 minutes each trip. Unfortunately, the Blackstone test does not show exactly what happened in the piston rings or VVTi sprocket that often get clogged and gunked up.

In addition, he typically comments on how these issues show up later in the engine's life: 160k miles and up, typically at 200k miles. His advice for 5k mile changes relates to the very long-term health of the engine. Yes, engines will get to the case described in the video, but for those of us who want the option of taking our engines to 200k, 300k and beyond, a shorter interval will get us there.

Oil changes, air filter and cabin filters, wipers etc from there work your way up to brakes (south main auto practically has a step by step tutorial on KZfaq to do a perfect brake job) and after that work your way into the basics of suspension like sway bar links. Chances are there's a KZfaq video on how to make a repair you're trying to do. So if you don’t do mostly highway and a lot of city driving just change your oil earlier it’s simple idk why this has to be so hard. Wich category do you fit in mostly highway or mostly city stop and go, and make a decision their. Obviously their other factors like climate but it’s not that hard.

@@EnthusiastsGarage I'm thinking The Car Car Nut only sees the vehicles that had problems. He doesn't take notice the of all the other vehicles with 19,000 mile change intervals and clean engines with no sludge, etc. If you're doing all city driving, 1,000 miles of city driving is the equivalent wear that your engine would have with 10,000 miles of highway driving. Therefore 10,000 miles of city only driving is the equivalent of 100,000 highway only miles. Duh, so yes, to expect to only change your oil every 100,000 miles of highway driving would be insane. Thus 10,000 miles of pure city driving is equally insane. In fact I'd consider 3000 miles a reasonable change interval if your driving pure city driving.

"this proves once and for all that 10,000 mile oil changes can safely be done..." Sure. I don't think anybody would debate that it CAN be done. That's not the debate. The debate in the case of 5k vs. 10k oil changes is that the engine will last much longer with 5k mile oil changes, which I agree with. and that debate, for some reason, is not done yet. I was taught the 3k/3month conventional 5k/6month synthetic rule of thumb many many years ago and I'm thankful for it, as it has paid off. For the record, I'm totally ok with people doing extended interval oil changes because that keeps demand for oil from spiraling out of control along with the price. 😉

great question, no it's not and that is a common misconception. the heat cycles on oil change the color more than anything. if you go over to the youtube channel "project farm" you will see all the oil tests he does. one of the tests is evap loss and he takes brand new oil right out of the bottle and puts it on a hot plate for 2 hours. when it comes off the oil is black like coffee and it has zero carbon contaminants in it. that's why you can't rely solely on the color.

In my opinion, I would not consider this a scientific test-it has no controls, does not eliminate confounding variables, does not control for selection bias, and has a sample size of 1; it does not look different engines, different years, different types driving conditions, different oils, etc. It only looks at a very specific uncontrolled single case. The only thing that can be claimed from this video is: in the case of this specific car, under these specific driving conditions, Blackstone labs tested the oil at 130,000 miles after 6 previous 10K mil oil changes, and Blackstone believed the oil was still good. Given the lack of controls in this video and hte small sample size, I don't think you can extrapolate the results to other makes, models, years, driving habits, etc., nor conclude the results here are relevant to how long a "10K mile oil change engine" will last vs. a "5K mile oil change engine" on average (which was the main point of the Car Care Nut video where he gave his personal opinion). To get a good reading on the issue, you'd have to spend 100's if not millions of dollars to do a large scale study over time. I propose we'll never know the truth on the 10k vs 5K mile oil change controversy.

Your average driving is a lot better than the average driving that most people do, short trips to the supermarket, idling in rush-hour traffic, etc. When you give a blanket statement of 10k miles on oil and don't tell your customers that you should do a 5-7500 interval depending on driving habits, instead just saying "10k suits most people." This is ignoring how most old people drive, how most kids will drive, whether or not you live in an overpopulated area with heavy traffic, if its hilly or extensively cold, have a lead foot, tow, offroad, even just drive on dirt roads per toyotas own q/a, or a combination of them. Thats why you see the teardowns and problems with 10k intervals that car care nut sees, because they sell the 10k interval, and don't entirely give the full story unless you look at the fine print. Highway miles long trips some oils make it to 25k miles, but those are people who drive extremely long trips and have low heat cycles. Unless you are getting the blackstone report, I don't believe you should EVER push to 10k even if the manufacturer recommends, as not only do they not know your driving habits, you don't know whats happening with your oil.

The thing is that, though 0-20 and 0-16 is not recommended for climate above 70 degrees or so, the engine is running at the same temp. by the cooling system keeping it at operating ranges. The only time it really matters is in the winter for starting. If anything, i'd say 0-30 or 5-30 is probably a good bet on best grade for most people. But, I could be wrong.

A very very small percentage of people qualify for highway driving conditions. Those are almost entirely reserved for long travel fleet vehicles. I own a quick lube and have changed the oil in over 150k+ vehicles over the last 20 years.... I can tell you with zero doubt that spending more money on an expensive or specialized oil and filter is a total waste if you keep your conventional/blends changed every 3000 miles and synthetics every 5000 miles. That really is the secret to making an engine last. Expensive filters/oils, etc and ESPECIALLY ADDITIVES are all a waste of money. The customers of mine that have used me to service their cars from the start, and keep their service on time with those recommendations, rarely if ever have any major engine issues. We service countless vehicles from those customers with over 300k+ miles that still run like a champ. The customers of mine that are sporadic with their maintenance, or decide to increase their change intervals by around 2k+ mileage over what we recommend, are the vehicles that almost always are leaking by 150k miles... and rarely do we service any of those vehicles much beyond that mileage as they simply do not last much longer than that. There are obviously random exceptions to that rule, but they are few and far between. I use Havoline oil at my shop and Prime Guard filters, btw. The entire oil and auto industry in the last 20 years has poured so much money into misleading advertising that most people will buy into anything they hear on a video or read on a website. It's all snake oil... keep your oil changes on the schedule that I mentioned above and you'll most likely never have to worry about your engine for the life of the vehicle. As long as you're using a name brand oil and filter, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Everyone swears by a brand of oil and filter that someone else despises for one reason or another. I hear it almost daily from customers... "I only ever use this or that, it's the best there is... I don't use this or that because I had a problem with it." ... and the very next customer says the exact opposite. The truth of the matter, ALL NAME BRAND OIL AND FILTERS GET THE JOB DONE NEARLY IDENTICAL TO EACH OTHER WITH THE CORRECT CHANGE INTERVALS.

The issue is, the VVTI gears need clean oil to work properly. Even if you drain all the oil, some oil will still be inside the engine. The Blackstone lab cannot check the oil condition inside the gears itself. Thats because that oil inside the gears rarely gets drained, even when the engine oil is drained. By replacing the oil early, you are basically diluting the dirty oil inside the VVTI gears, keeping them functioning longer. If you google this engine, the 1ZR-FE, it is notorious for VVTI rattle on cold start up. I would not be surprised if your car rattles upon a cold start.
