Since 1985, Sylvia Maessen ( sylviamaessen.nl ) is the owner of the tugboat Arethusa, that was built in 1927 and was baptized Ina at the shipyard Zuidam in Haarlem for the sanitation department of that town of which Sylvia has bought the Arethusa. In 1999 she had the former engine, a four cylinder Kromhout-Gardner, replaced by the current Industrie 2VD5 from 1939. Sylvia lubes the poppet valves, cranks the flywheel and puts the starting air on it. Next she takes out sailing on the Vecht, showing off the looks and sounds of the Arethusa. Vincent Horbach of Rederij Prinsengracht ( rederijprinsengracht.com ) in Amsterdam recommends the engine. ‘These engines should be made part of the Monument Act like all maritime heritage.’

As a lifelong engineer I have so much respect for people who cherish vintage engines! I ADORE the things their music sends me to sleep ! SUPERB!

Indeed. Things today aren't nearly as impressive. For one, nothing made today will be running at that age, and it will *never* reach the "it was made by hand by blood sweat and tears" that really brings this kind of thing home. Sorry but things made by computers and robots are 🙄 compared to these kinds of things. People like to claim "but I still told the computer what to do". Yeah, but you didn't bleed and sweat all over it.

Two wonderful ladies. It seems to me that the Netherlands and Sweden are the main places where old marine engines such as this and semi-diesel hot bulb types are preserved with true appreciation. I wish they were still made today!

Wow that sound as the giant of an engine slowly goes back to sleep at the end. It's poetic to see that gentle lady operating the valves, like a fairy using her magic to give a kind monster some much needed rest.

This couple are totally correct. Some engines play a beautiful tune and need to be given a recognised preservation status. Mechanical engineering is such an under appreciated art form.

What a nice girl! The boat, too, of course. I do appreciate your videos very much even if I can only understand when you put on subs. Being from a seafaring nation a little to the nor'east of you, I really envy the sheer size and state of maintenance of the Dutch historic fleet! Thank you!

I have a childhood memory of a family friend’s old fishing boat. It had a Kelvin petrol-paraffin single cylinder engine. To a child it was huge. I loved learning to start it on petrol and then crossing over to paraffin once everything was warmed through. I’ll never forget the sound, smell and vibration. This video’s engine was evocative, not the same but near enough to make me think about that old boat. I really liked the camera shake in time to the engine revving😂

My God look at the size of that beast and all for 60HP? When I see old engines like this and then even older steam engines etc it makes me realize the huge leap humanity made from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. It truly is a remarkable leap for our species, in the space of a couple of hundred years we go from steam engines to landing on the moon, mind blowing. Anyway she is a gorgeous looking old boat, her sheer line is beautiful
@sqmotorsports9230
@sqmotorsports9230 8 ай бұрын
Yeah but the torque figure is probably 1000 ft lbs or more. It's generating that 60hp at around 100 or 200 RPM so the numbers are ver different from what we're used to today.
