In this video I talk about the issue that my 1.8 tdci Ford Mondeo is not warming up properly. I never made the connection, but seems that this problem started after I blanked the EGR. In this video I will do a warmup test with the EGR blanked and afterwards do the same test (same road, similar weather conditions) with the EGR valve unblanked.

Old video, but food for thought: 1) A dirty EGR is still more trouble than slower heating up. Cleaning it out is a major pain in the butt because it's behind the engine. It's just a big hassle. And if it gets clogged up, prepare for all sorts of trouble. 2) You can always install a heater into these cars. I am not sure about your 1.8 TDCi , but my car had the Webasto heater option installed on it. You can get the whole heater part, used, from these people who hoard parts. It's pretty cheap. In cold you can heat up the car with a remote, and the car also auto-starts the heater in colder weather, so the car is toasty in minutes. I highly recommend this upgrade.

If putting cardboard in front of the radiator helps, it's possible your radiator shutter system is stuck open. If anything, blanking the EGR should result in the engine running warmer. The EGR is designed to recycle exhaust gas to reduce combustion temperature in order to reduce the oxidisation of nitrogen.

13 kilometers is still way too long for an engine to warm the coolant properly. Something else is off here. As stated before in the comments, blocking the EGR will result in higher combustion temperatures. This does not automaticly mean higher coolant temperatures tho. Oil temperature is what you would want to know. Low oil temps will give less lubrication and more engine wear as needed. I would replace both thermostats for OE Ford ones(yes, there are two on these engines) and see if this cures the issue. Also, that firmware update is always a good thing to do.

The 1.8 TDCi takes longer to warm up to its optimum operating temperature than other engines because it is not of aluminum construction but a cast iron engine block. And one more question. Where does the 1.8 TDCi have the second thermostat?

The other day I just made an STS EGR blanking plate for my 2006 Mazda BT 50 2.5 common rail turbo diesel, it now runs much cooler but the check engine light has come on. I have not put a screw in the vacuum line yet, so the EGR valve is still working but drawing no exhaust gases. I live in a subtropical climate.

HI, I am also thinking of blanking out the EGR on my 2007 Focus 1.8 tdci since it sometimes causes power drop at around 1700 rpm and also causes the car to shake when the enigne is hot and idling (I already replaced the engine mounts). My daily drive is about 18 km one way and the engine is alreday slow to warm up on this route since the route doesnt include a lot of acceleration or highway driving. Engine oil in all cars warms up even slower than the coolant (it can take 30 + km to reach working temperature during the winter) and that translates into higer viscosity and more wear and tear in the long run, so blanking the EGR would just add to the problem of slow warmup. Therfore I think the solution of attaching some kind of blanking plate (I would use metal or plastic) over a part of the radiator to compensate egr delete is not a bad idea at all. Even ford used a blanking plate from transit van to cover part of the intercooler on the focus RS mk3 (google it!), since the cooler was too efficient and caused condensation in the intake system at low ambient temperatures. You can also make a blanking plate system that is easy to attach and remove and have it on during cold months and remove it during summer. I will report back my findings if I decide to go for it on my car. Great videos by the way really enjoyed all the ford related ones, lots of useful information!

you got a cool running thermostat because I had the same issue, I changed mine to a genuine ford, and it reaches temperature beautifully, also your power drop might be due to the turbo pressure control valve actuator, again I changed mine, and power was restored. As for my EGR, i never blank it, the engine runs in sync, if you disturb that sync it will effect something else. I just replaced mine, should be good for another 100k

Do you still have mondeo? I have blanked EGR valve 2 years ago and engine is still runing with no problems. During the winter when outside temperatures are low it needs little bit time to warm up an the engine is little bit louder till warm up a little bit. Probably you will also hear occasional injector rattle around 1500rpm under load.

You can actually re route the egr coolant pipes straight from outlet to inlet instead of it running through the egr so the engine doesn’t take longer to heat up

Good video! Well if your engine never reaches perfect working themperatur is not good over long time, because the oil will not perform propperly. The wear in the barings and pistons is bigger. However, I just found some YT-video where they using blanking plate with a some 7mm wide hole in it. So this sounds for me as a good compromize. Not completely blocking the AGR but reducing the flow down to about 25% or so. Like taking the best out of both worlds. With that you have at least some EGR flow to help the engine reaching its optimal working temperature but without gettin too much carbon deposits in your intake manifold and valves. I gonna make a ERG blanking plate with a 7mm hole in it for my Hyundai H-1 2,5l Turbodiesel this evening. Will see If I feel any difference.

Hi all, I'm looking to blank my vans egr, but the research I've done shows the engine runs slightly hotter when blanked not colder... it states because it gets more oxygen it burns the fuel more efficiently thus providing more power, which in turn produces slightly more heat? With this added heat it helps reduce them coking up as much helping to prolong the life of the cat/dpf but reduces turbo life slightly due to it running that little bit hotter so adding wear there. Not feeding the engine it's own fecal matter helps keep the oil cleaner for longer causing less wear internally. Overall it's a trade off but I think it's definitely worth blanking the egr off as there are more benefits than cons, even though it's slightly worse for the polar-bears (I hope they accept my apologies). Have I missed something here or do I have the wrong end of the stick? TIA

Yep, the EGR is supposed to reduce combustion temperatures in order to reduce the production of nitrous oxide. So blanking it would result in higher combustion temperatures and a quicker warm-up.

I want to ask you if you also had a problem with the engine warming up for a long time and that is why you replaced the egr valve? And after replacing it, was this problem solved? I am asking because I also have a 1.8 TDCi, I have already replaced the thermostat with a brand new Ford OEM part, I have replaced the coolant temperature sensor and the engine is still hard to warm up in cold weather. Even cold when driving downhill... Thanks in advance for your reply.

EGR was very good in decreasing nox but it's not suitable in Philippines because it's hot weather while US was cold weather .so it's better in U S but most likely not suitable was carbon deposits in the intake manifold,t/c was usually design for very high temp.i think it will not damaged T/C unless it it design by very poor material, air intake was design to adjust close or open that's probably cause engine performance ,when EGR returns exh.gas to the engine ,air intake was also functioning vacuum controlled by computer to reduced nox when weather was hot or cold,so when EGR was blocked ,intake air must be always at full open to remain engine performance less air more fuel would make engine overheat or cold.

The coolant still flows in the EGR cooler but the exhaust gasses do not. They carry the heat and the water takes it. Once the valve has been blanked, the air inside the cooler become stagnant and stays pretty much at the coolant temperature.
