The New York Central Railroad was facing a bit of a dilemma at the start of the 20th century. Freight trains were holding up faster passenger trains out on the famed Water Level Route and elsewhere on the NYC system. These freights were often dragged by lumbering and aging 2-8-0s and mixed traffic 4-6-2s weren't providing enough speed and power. The New York Central would hop into the world of 4-8-2 steam motive power. They would nickname these engines "Mohawk" after the Mohawk River which ran along portions of the network. So how did the Mohawks get along on the New York Central Railroad? Find out in this episode!

4:04 - The shape of the builder's plate shows that this loco, 3037, was a product of the Lima Locomotive Works. Alvin Staufer in his book "Steam Power of the New York Central System" writes that also 3100-3124 (L4a) and 3125-3149 (L4b) were Lima-built.

Still amazed there’s actually two of them left. 3001 was straight up lucky getting sold to the T&P before steam on the NYC ended, and 2933 _should've_ been scrapped with the other 598 Mohawks. Shop crews just manger to keep it hidden long enough

@@WAL_DC-6B unless if both of them survived together, somebody should have saved 3001 and preserved it somewhere before being displayed where it currently is now. And Texas & Pacific 638 would have survived and stay at the same display area today.

As of September 11th, 2023 during the monthly city of Elkhart common council meeting it was revealed that a organization from Fort Wayne Indiana (Possibly the Fort Wayne railroad Historical society who currently operates NKP765) has expressed interest and is very close to acquiring NYC 3001 from the city of Elkhart in order to restore it to possibly operating condition to be used in excursions. One of the challenges though is that some members of the city council are opposed to the idea of 3001 leaving because it is an asset to the city and it is this opposition that has killed off past attempts at restoring it.

First, I’m a big fan of your videos! I did just want to provide a correction as 3037 you have pictured has a LIMA builder plate which got me looking, as my great grandfather was working there at the time. L-1d 2585-2684, , L3-b 3035-3049 and lastly L4-b 3100-3149 all were built by Lima. Fun fact, the last L4-b order cost the NYC $182,633 for each locomotive. So can’t give ALCO all the credit. Also worth mentioning the NYC was Lima’s best customer with a total of 872 locomotives delivered. Source: Lima the history by Eric Hirsimaki.

Two of the L4b Mohawks, 3144 and 3148 were fitted with Timken roller bearing rods in the 1940's along with other modifications. They proved to be two of the fasted Mohawks on the system. However, with the coming of the Niagara there was no need to modify any others. MTH Premier has accurately modeled both of those engines in O scale.
