Aah that brings back memories of my Dad in the 1970’s when he used to say that footballers in the 1940’s and ‘50s were real men, not these guys with long hair who look like girls and who play negative football, not the positive attacking football of yore

I remember the game on TV. Germany were led by the imperious Beckenbauer and driven by Gunter Netzer in what was probably the most complete midfield performance I have ever witnessed Only 2 years later West Germany won the Jules Rimet Trophy beating a Johan Cruff Dutch side 3 1 in the final, a tournament England failed to qualify for losing to Poland in the qualifying group

German dominance ? They won Euro 72 and the WC in 74. Euro 80 six years later. It took another 10 to win their next trophy in 1990. They didn't dominate the WC and while three wins in the Euros is impressive from 1972-1996, they didn't win the other 5.

@@DannyBoy777777I believe the OP is saying that Germany were almost always there at the business end of tournaments. Two World Cup runners-up finishes (1982, 1986) plus another European Final in 1992, in addition to what has already been mentioned, is not to be sniffed at. They were very consistent back then.

@@NuisanceMan It really wasn't. England had no chance. Germany had beat them 2 years prior already at the 1970s World Cup and while England got worse and didn't qualify for any major tournament until 1982, Germans went on to win the 1972 Euros, 1974 World Cup & 1980 Euros.

West Germany and the Netherlands were the up- and-coming powers in European football then and England, representing the old guard, was on the wane at the time, probably lingering still on the memories of 1966. This match always reminds me somewhat of the footballing lessons the great Hungarian team of the 1950's gave the Three Lions in 1953 and '54, something of a shock for England and the English footballing press, but then again, that was no harm. They need a come-uppance every now and again. 😌
@NuisanceMan4 ай бұрын
Probably true, but England was much more in the fight here than in '53 and '54 against Hungary. In this one, they had been building up for a long time toward Lee's equalizer and it looked like they'd earned at least a draw.

I really can't understand how you can manage to cut a game together so disastrously. Totally disjointed editing. Cuts that are far too short or abrupt cuts in the middle of action. If you can't do something like that, then you'd better leave it alone. I'll give you some good advice: don't do it in future.

The tragedy is that in the 70's England could have been doing the same as the Germans with some thought, better management and more professionalism from the players. Unfortunately none of those things happened. German and English players had a lot in common; physically strong, durable and never gave up but the Germans had better technique and were able to add flair to their other qualities. The Germans did not cross long balls to the far post; they played a lot of one-two’s and angled passes, especially to front players and tried to reach the foot farthest away from the marker.
