Rakitić never played for Croatia U-21, he played for Switzerland youth selections, till U-19. He started playing for Croatian National team when he was 19. In this game he's only 19 years old.

Dudu played for Dinamo Zagreb, and has scored so many goals against Hajduk Split. Full stadium of 35k people in Split would close their eyes every time he recieved a ball. Hajduk is in heart of every Dalmatian so is in mine. Deep in our souls. And .... hard to imagine... But we all love Dudu. There was never a player from Dinamo that we acctualy love. But we love Dudu, and always have. Even tho he has given us so much pain. I remember day when that butcher Martin Taylor broke his leg. I admit, I shed a tear and I wasn't the only Hajduk fan... many, many of us. It is one of the saddest days of Croatian childhood, along with the Turkish tragedy of 2008

Saying they would win 100% the second game. Ironically pundits were also arrogant in 2018 saying they were already in the finals vs us and got another humbling reality check.

@@BKcroatia well I'm an England fan, I went from not expecting them to get out the group stage at the beginning to then thinking they'd make the final by beating Croatia. Actually, I think England threw away their lead. But it's the same every time, fans get over excited only to get a reality check when the team fail to close the deal! They rightly got punished by a solid team. This Euros there's pundits saying England must win it, and are favourites. It's true they have a great squad, possibly the strongest, but I do not expect too much this time, as they have weaknesses and seem to switch between lacking belief to over confidence. It could be misconstrued as arrogance, I get that, but I think it's more like a child who gets over excited and allows their imagination to exceed the reality of their abilities. It ends in crying very often! The pundits and the fans need a middle ground of cautious optimism.

This match was one of the sweetest wins for sure. Especially because we already qualified but your media is the main reason why we won. They underestimated us although we won 2 - 0 in the first game as well. This got our boys and the entire nation fired up. We wanted to deny you a great tournament because of your foolish media and we succeded. Your media did the same mistake in 2018. The semifinal match wasnt about going through to the finals as much as it was about proving you wrong and making you eat your words. Its hard to explain to a foreigner the social climate in the country at that time but thats what it was about. Our players went on record confirming the english media was their greatest motivation. England has no modesty in football. That Beckham pass is masterclass btw, I could spend the entire day just looking at that pass. Also Mladen Petrić is one of the most underrated footballers in world football. Definetly the most underrated Croatian player of all time. First time I heard of him he saved a penalty for Basel. Yeah, he saved a last minute penalty when their keeper got sent off. Later on in his career he dominated the bundesliga scoring 2 overhead kick goals in 1 season and adding a ton of top corner dust cleaning eurogoals as well. His tandem with Olić is the 2nd best in the history of the bundesliga in terms of goal contributions in a single season only behind Džeko-Grafite. And he always delivered for Croatia, always. Beast of a player. It's a shame he went under the radar of european top clubs somehow. Until we meet again...

That pass from Eduardo to make it 2-0 was one of the best I've ever seen in my entire life. I can hardly forgive Martin Taylor for fouling this wonderful Arsenal and Croatia player so badly that he couldn't play at the European Championships 2008.

No, being real, it was a penalty, Simunic pulled Defoe's shirt from behind. No reason to do it, but it was a foul. Not strong contact but if you pull someone's shirt from behind that is just an unfair foul move to stop them from trying to get to the ball.

Terry and Cole apparently played for Chelsea a few days later. Neville was out with a long term injury most of that season. Think Carragher had retired from international football at that point. Not sure about Ferdinand.

It was a penalty, the gift was from Simunic with a totally unnecessary shirt pull on Defoe because Defoe was never getting to the ball ahead of Pletikosa. Anyway didn't matter at all in the end and Croatia got the win that they deserved, they should've won by more really.

I know they like(d) this in Scotland ;-)...they definitely did so in Russia (the press was hilarious)...after many a classy game by Croatia, this match still contains some of the biggest moments in Croatian football....a) the 2:0 is the best counter attack 2 vs 6 by a Croatian side ever, b) Mladen Petric was more than a mere substitute, he was on top of his form and wanted to show what he can do, his goal was classy; c) Croatia did not even have to win this, they were through already, but young Modric in his 2nd year was leading an energetic and proud team; alas, amidst the England mayhem the genius chip by Becks to Crouch will never get the credit it deserves

Trophy or not, things are much brighter now. Having a chance of winning a tournament has gone from a delusion to a genuine possibility.

Late 90s and 2000s England team remains a mystery to me. To have Terry, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole, Richards, Lampard, Cole, Scholes, Carrick, Gerrard, Becham, Rooney Crouch and Owen and not to even come close to winning anything... Unbelievable. From my point of view, two major issues for England were unreliable goalkeepers and fatalist mindset - I can't count how many times England lost a game that was already won, with the worst example being 2004 Euro injury time defeat against France. I do agree that ENgland looks far better now. Talent was never an issue, so now with three good goalkeepers, a generational leader in Kane and with a stacked team full of exciting young players it doesn't seem unlikely that England might actually win something in the upcoming years. And I would actually be glad if you did - yes, I said it! :D

Best victory before this was 3 - 0 against Germany when we knocked them out of the WC back in 98. Stratch that, same tournament 2 - 1 against the Netherlands to secure 3rd place. wtf ur talking about. We were alredy on euro 2008 b4 this game. We also won against England in first game in Zagreb. But this is the greatest ? Why ? Croatia has a loooot of wins against any of top10 european teems execpt Portugal. This was pure joy. By the way, we were about to lose this game by going into easy and watch to not get injured, and then freakin english did some shit first at the airport for takeing into coustudy our member of our FA for listing trough some newspapers on the airport for a few seconds... and putting it back withtout buying them (wich you can do in Croatia, but obvisuly not in England), after that there was bigtime shittalk from English media for no reason. Also some shits in hotel etc. And that was it. From going on easy game, England got fucked for talking 2 much shit. That's why we will always remember this game. Not bcs of result... England in this game not only had bad luck, they were so "taking for granted" that they would at least get a draw. Well, God prepare food for each bird but never put it in the nest. Btw, Croatia was not a too strong team at the time, they did well in the following year's Euro, but did not even make it to the 2010 World Cup! Kind of surprising.

@@metalprincesses5073 yes they did but I believe Croatia were exhausted after their semi battle with England and their quarter final into penalties with hosts Russia....I think they were in another Extra time game at the last 16. France exploited that with pace by the speedster kylian mbappe. I remember Croatia drawing with France 2-2 in the group stages at Euro 2004 whereby Croatia should have beaten them.

@@metalprincesses5073 Croatia dominated that game throughout. The TV stat was 68-32 for Croatia and the shots and corner counts were similar. They were denied by refereeing decisions and the pitch invasion.

No this was a penalty, Simunic pulled Defoe's shirt. The fakest penalty of this Euro 2008 qualification was actually against England when Russia got a fake penalty when Rooney fouled someone outside the penalty area, it should've been a freekick just outside the penalty area. Anyway, that said, England did not deserve to qualify because they were worse than Croatia and Russia over the course of the whole qualifying period.

@@semperfidelis6842 Nope in reality, it's clearly a penalty as you can see Defoe's shirt number screwed up in Simunic's hand lol, definite shirt pull and foul, so penalty. The penalty should've been retaken though because too many players entered the area too early, at least you're right about that part. We'll see if England don't even make it out of the group this year, you wanna bet on that?
