The moment the England players didn't see Rodri come out for the second half had them somewhat relax....that didn't last long . Spain still had a game plan from start to finish and never lost shape or panicked. They stuck to the task.

I think xavi is the perfect replacement and i think he would take the job. Hear me out..... He did a solid, although slightly underwhelming, job at Barca under extremely difficult circumstances. He kept barca competitive despite financial constraints, relative to the big clubs they compete with. He brought through youth like gavi, pedri and yamal....amongst others...and played in a brave attractive way. His tactical understanding is very high and he has the x factor that demands respect from the biggest footballing stars of which England have many. Players like TAA, Stones, Guehi, Mainoo, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Palmer, Eze, Wharton and many others who weren't even taken are extremely technical players who play high pressing attacking football for their clubs and want to play that way for England. It would take only a few training camps for england to transform the way they play and become a fearful team. On xavi, where does he go from Barcelona if not England? If he wants to be an elite manager up their with the very best? He may want to manage in the PL one day but his experience of english football is not yet at a level where he could know he can take on a PL club and win. England gives him the opportunity to gain this experience and show he can win. And win he would. At a time where england are crying out for an attacking manager with winning mentality and experience and a time where xavi is struggling to see what his next step would be following a difficult yet well executed job at Barcelona. I think the stars are aligned and everyone benfits after a four year stint. England would get the success this generation deserves and the footballing philosophy that enables them to throw caution to the wind because of the fear they generate whilst xavi is able to build on his managerial experience, remain in the glittering spotlight and not become forgotten, learn the english game and open up a new job market for himself through implementing a winning philosophy into an unbelievably talented group of players who already are bred to play football in this expansive way. Finally and perhaps most importantly, he isnt going to upset the apple cart, he is professional, never controversial, good with media and a poster boy. The FA wins from this appointment too. Food for thought i cant believe more people arent saying it

Is Kane a great player or just good. If I recall in 2018 when England were winning against Croatia he had a golden chance to make it 2-0 and he fluffed it up. Against France in Qatar he scores the first penalty then the opportunity to make it 2-2 with another penalty and skied it so high the ball is still traveling in space. Those two games for me is where a top top quality international striker takes England to a final v France in 18 and if Kane scores that penalty against France in 22 England would have had a good chance in extra time v France to get further. It seems like when it matters most he has failed when it mattered most. In this tournament he had a stinker, sure he scored against Denmark and Slovakia and a pen v Netherlands but otherwise he was non existent in most games. Maybe that was Southgates negative tactics as a stiker like Kane thrives on service of which there was little or he was carrying an injury. I dont care what anyone says, I would rather have a fully fit striker who is maybe not quite as good but is able to press than a 70-80% fit Kane which at times felt like we had 10 players and not 11. Same with Mbappe you could tell that the broken nose affacted him big time so what is the point. Play someone else who is fit. That is the managers job. Drop the big names for the benefit of the team. The German manager did it with Wirtz to give his team more balance. Its not like Kane didn't have opportunities to show his form, same with Foden. Palmer should have played more minutes and Toni and Watkins should have been given the chance. However when managers are loyal to their so called super stars then this is what happens. Look at Portugal. I think Ronaldo picked the team as Martinez was too scared to leave him out. Same with Kane and Soutgate and Mbappe with Deschamps. Spain has Torres who has scored 22 goals in around 40 games but De La Fuente gave Yamal a 16 year old the chance. De la Fuente picked a team that on paper other than Rodri lacked star names but it's not about individuals it's about the team. For me this tournament really showed that sometimes we forget that football is not played on paper but on grass and that 11 guys working for the collective is what it's all about. Spain were a wonderful surprise. They didn't care who they played or what the score was. They had a very clear identity and philosophy in how they wanted to play. Attack, press high and win the ball back asap to counter. They showed they could defend, attack or whatever they needed to do. Possession football or direct. They beat 4 previous world cup winners in style and deserved this trophy no doubt about it. Well done Spain and I look forward to 2026!
