Soaking up the atmosphere in the sunshine under the Brandenburg Gate there are mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, and, in the case of one family queuing in front of me in the ice-cream parlour, dutiful grandparents brought along to look after two small, sticky-fingered boys so the parents can go to the match. Prince William and Sir Keir Starmer will be watching too.
For the fans still without a ticket, it’s a frantic scramble on resale sites, such as Viagogo and StubHub, to secure one. The stadium has a 71,000-person capacity but only 10,000 seats are allocated to England fans, with others going to the host country and official hospitality (around 3,000 each), commercial partners (around 5,000), Uefa family and VIPs (2,000) and others.
